Education, in some form, has been something mankind has strived for since appearing on earth. Many scholars believe that early cave paintings dating back to 130,000 b.c.e. were "depictions used a manual for instructing others what animals were safe to eat." We have come a significantly long way since then. And somewhere along the way roughly 1088, universities were created. Harvard University, founded in 1636, claims itself to be "the oldest institution of higher education in the United States." Education can provide you with the necessary tools to learn and grow. The impact of technology has greatly changed todays workforce. The advancement in technology in the workplace has helped many to successfully and efficiently complete tasks in a timely manner. Basic skills have become more innovative with the technology advances allowing things to run smoother and easier. Technology is always rapidly changing and increasing. For example, cell phones have become so advanced that you can locate someone from an app on their phone, order clothes and necessities without leaving home, and pay for your bills all from one small device. We should all strive to become more cohesive with technology. Furthering your education to keep up with the advances in technology will help you better prepare for the world. Phil Mickelson said," I think a college education is important no matter what you do in life." I also believe this to be true, it is very difficult to succeed in life without a college education. The Greek Philosopher Aristotle identified “The years between puberty and age twenty-one as the formative time for mind and character.” It was customary for young Greek men to attend a series of lectures that resembled our notion of a college “course”(Delbanco 36). Aristotle is a believer of education and the power it has on the development of the young mind. Likewise, he believes college is a place to establish one’s character. Caroline Bird’s essay, “Where College Fails Us,” definitely does not correlate with the opinion of Aristotle.
Is college worth it? Recently people have debated endlessly over this juggernaut of a question. Whether it's worth the debt and the added 4 years of stress and insanity when discovering the perfect future. There are many antagonistic claims that prove each other wrong but in the long haul college offers loads of added benefits that come into play when looking for a steady high paying job. Therefor proving that college is worth it because graduates tend to make higher salaries and prove to be more employable than those lacking a college degree.
This must be a surprising fact since Ivy League schools have been considered as the most outstanding schools since 1954, when the term ‘Ivy League’ was established (‘Ivy League’). Ivy League schools are the 8 prestigious schools in Northeastern United States which are Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University. For more than 50 years, they maintained their reputation of academic excellence, selective admissions, and social elitism (‘Ivy League’). Currently they were all placed in top 16 of the US Best Colleges rankings (‘National University Rankings | Top National Universities | US News Best Colleges’) and placed in top 50 of QS World University Rankings (‘QS World University Rankings 2013’). Although they still maintain high ranks, nowadays some people argue that the time for Ivy League schools is over, pointing out their high tuition fee and emerge of non-Ivy schools as new outstanding schools.
The world that we know is getting more complex, and since technology is advancing, it is making us as a society more dependent on it. Most things nowadays can be conquered by using technology. If you have a question, you can Google it and get the answer in seconds. When you don't want to walk, you can call a lyft, and if you don't have cash, you can use your phone to pay. All of these are examples of how technology has made things easier for us.
Many businesses are now requiring a higher knowledge in technology as to keep up with such a fast paced world. If we refuse to accept that technology has now become part of our life we fail to keep up with the world and are soon left behind in the dust of old books and countless hours of troublesome research. It is now more common to see a teenager helping an older person with their phone/Ipod/computer. Our generation is rising as one of the first to be neck deep in technology. For many people, college is an important key for their future. Some people go to college for the job opportunities and the new windows it can open. Others go just for the education and experience. A good education is beneficial from many different viewpoints; in truth, it is a possibility that one's adult life could be much harder than people care to think. This includes helping you get accustomed to the workload you will have in the career because sometimes you will have to stay up late to finish work and study. College will also give you exposure to special and expensive labs and technologies. It also gives you the basic information you need to know and understand. Without a higher education, I would not have those same resources.
