As the world of global exploration and colonization grew, many powerful European empires set out to see what the New World had in store for them. Each empire had their own individual agendas and incentives for colonization. This led to the many differences between methods of colonization and exploration in every colony and region. The Atlantic World portrayed these contrasts between the Spanish, French, Dutch and British empires. However, the British settlements along the Eastern seaboard differed the most from those of other empires because there were no established policies or methods in British colonization, which led to differences in the economics and culture of each colony depending on who settled it. All four empires colonized for a number of reasons. These included finding another route to the East Indies, empire building, proselytization, and the extraction of natural resources. These different motivations shaped the settlements and colonies of each empire. While most empires had the same motivations in all of their colonies in an area, the British motivations varied in each colony. Their policies and methods of colonization were consistent in every region they conquered because of this fact. The British colonies were inconsistent because the they were controlled by both the king and stock companies, which meant that different colonies had different incentives to settle. This hybrid of authority in each region meant that the North American colonies cannot be studied thematically as a whole, rather they must be analyzed as individual cases. In the early 1600’s British settlers colonized the east coast of North America forming a total of 13 colonies. These arising colonies began to grow and evolve into different societies despite being from the same region beforehand. One of the reasons that led to distinct separation among regions was social disjunctions. Others significant reasons include various economic incentives and political stance as well as religious motives. With varying social, economic, and religious disjunctions, the New England and Chesapeake regions both evolved into two distinct societies by the start of the 18’th century.
1) Compare and contrast the French and Spanish experiences in the New World. a. As the Spanish empire spread over the southern portion of the present-day United States, the mission was developed to colonial development and to convert the Indians. More importantly the Spanish were there to get gold and other riches. On the other hand French wanted to increase trade. They traded textiles, weapons, and metal goods.
The British men gathered full control of the trading center present in the Americas, and created the Navigation Acts to help aid them in their tactics to take control over all trade within the Americas. The Navigation Acts were passed under a mercantilist system, and was used to regulate trade in a way that only benefitted the British economy. These acts restricted trade between England and its colonies to English or colonial ships, required certain colonial goods to pass through England before export, provided subsidies for the production of certain raw goods in the colonies, and banned colonial competition in large-scale manufacturing. This lowered the competition in the trading world for the British and caused the British to have a major surge in power, that greatly attributed to the growth of their rising empire. The British’s ambitious motives in the trading world help portray a way that the British took control of an important piece in the economy of all of the other nations present in the colonies in the time period, and shows another leading factor in the growth of the British empire.
England was more concerned with the colonies ability to produce vital resource for economical gains rather that than the colonist desires. Early settlers in the Southern colonies were form to seek economic gains for England while later Northern colonies were formed by individuals seeking to practice their religious faith without persecution. Economic gains had little concern for them.
In 1606 British settlers came to the Chesapeake region in search of wealth and a better life; in 1620 Puritan settlers came to the New England region in search of religious freedom and a better life. Both groups had their woes, be them indians, disease, or famine, but eventually began to spread out and colonized. The Puritans created New England as a chance to live their lives in a Puritan society with Puritan values. The settlers of the Chesapeake region colonized in the south as a chance to work the land and gain wealth. Both the settlers of New England and Chesapeake settled to search for a better life, beyond what could be offered to them in the old world.
Looking for wealth and power, imperialist nations sought to colonize and control regions that would theoretically benefit from this new rule. The

The colony was primarily a trading base economy with a few farming establishments in the Western areas of the Americas. The Spanish exploited their new territory for the minerals, which created a massive aspect to the colonies. To explain, gold was a primary source for the Spanish settlers because of the value. Due to its rare attainability and richness, gold gave the aid to uprising the Spanish empires. Similarly, the English colonists survived economically through trading and farming.
The English were more concerned with finding gold rather than building functioning societies; which were primarily built around biblical teachings, while the Spanish intended for European national power to extend to western civilization beginning with Catholicism and influence of the pope. English settlers were driven from England due to religious practices and perceived themselves as saving the Indians from the Spanish and their tyrannical ways. For the English, owning land would give men control over their own labor and the right to vote in most colonies, and this land possession would show wealth. This new obtained wealth would not only have demonstrated power, but it could also be used to influence a society a certain way to convince others to follow suit. The English believed that their motives for colonization were pure, and that the growth of empire and freedom would always go together, unlike the Spanish.
The historical phenomenon of colonization is one of the stretches around the globe and across the time. Colonization or imperialism is the process of settling among and chartering control over homegrown people of an area. Colonization was first led by Spain and Portugal, in search of riches and trade routes mainly. Then it was followed by England, French and many others who left for different reasons. Colonialism and Imperialism affected our world both positively and negatively. On one hand, Imperialism has often been linked with racial segregation, manipulation, and hardship. On the other, it has been said that many colonial powers contributed much in terms of schools, roads, railways, and much more. Whether this time period was constructive or harmful, it has played a large part in shaping our lives today. European Imperialism started long before the 1800’s.
