Congolese nationalist Patrice Lumumba was elected the first Prime Minister, while Joseph Kasa-Vubu became the first President. Conflict arose over the administration of the territory which became known as the Congo Crisis. The provinces of Katanga, under Moïse Tshombe, and South Kasai attempted to secede from the Congo. On 5 September 1960, Kasa-Vubu dismissed Lumumba from office, encouraged by the United States and Belgium after Lumumba turned to the Soviet Union for assistance in the crisis. On 14 September, with U.S. and Belgian support, Lumumba was arrested by forces loyal to Army Chief of Staff Joseph-Désiré Mobutu, who had gained control over the country, and on 17 January 1961 Lumumba was handed over to Katangan authorities and executed by Belgian-led Katangese
Belgian occupied Africa in 1994 favouring the Tutsis over the Hutus giving them more privileges . Both of these groups developed a sense of nationalism, feeling victimized by one another, this sense of nationalism led to Ultranationalism among these groups causing tension among the groups. Extreme forms of Hutu nationalism fueled by propaganda led to a 100-day bloodbath in which caused mass casualties between these groups. Stirred feeling of nationalism in hopes of a better future increased tensions between these two groups leading to genocide. Ultranationalistic leaders used pride and devotion on one’s country as justification for the actions and racist
Without the colonization of Tanganyika, resources may have not been obtained as easily and may require more force. B. Congo Free State was a colony to Belgium, specifically King Leopold II. Leopold took control of the country and began leeching the resources from the lands, such as ivory, palm oil, and rubber. In return, handles, soap and candles, and waterproof clothes were made.
The population decreased drastically due to the working conditions and hard quotas of the missionaries, due to these hard conditions their consequences were extremely brutal. For example found in document 8 it states “it is blood curdling to see them returning with the hands of the slain, and to find the hands of the young children amongst the bigger ones evidence their bravery.” ( Document 8) This evidence contributes to the decrease in population amongst the African tribes in Congo. The African tribes hard work, was what they would consider lazy, and in return for that they would get limbs cut off, and severely, death could occur.
Survivor of the Holocaust and author of the well-respected memoir, Night, Elie Wiesel invites humane action with this statement: “Wherever men or women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must – at that moment – become the center of the universe” (1). One of the various “center[s] of the universe” presently is the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a struggling nation in which thousands of innocent civilians die each month from war-related causes and governmental forces. In the last decade alone, the Democratic Republic of the Congo suffered through two severe wars, one in 1996 and the other in 1998. The first resulted from ethnic tensions and, in particular, perpetrators of the Rwandan genocide, who,

Chapter 1 in the textbook discusses culture, which includes festivals, regions, and people. The image that represents Ch.1, Louisiana’s culture shows the five cultural regions, Mardi Gras beads, and music notes.
From King Leopold’s Public Letter, he says “The task which Belgian agents have to accomplish in the Congo is noble. It is incumbent upon them to carry on the work of civilization in Africa. The aim is to regenerate races whose degradation and misfortune is hard to realize.” Through those words, King Leopold, the king of Belgium, was trying to show the other countries that he was a
When King Leopold established the Congo Free State, he destroyed the link between the Congolese people and their homeland (Kenneth). King Leopold made one single country between Belgium and Congo. He combined the ethnicities of both of these cultures, taking away the Congolese people’s heritage and culture. In addition to this, the Roman Catholic Church forced their religion and values on the Congolese people, taking away their beliefs, and using violence if necessary. The Belgians forced their values upon the Congolese people in order to assimilate their religion and gain more power.
After these events transpired, Belgium worked to make the Congo semi-dependent, though the Congo still worked to be completely free through different nationalist groups. One leader was a man named
This made large divides between the two cultures and later many civil conflicts between the groups. In 1994 when the president 's plane was shot down the government and Hutu militants blamed the Tutsis, radio broadcasts across the country encourages Hutus to take revenge and kill the Tutsis, in the end an estimated 800000 to 1 million people died. The globalization of Belgians colony and the scramble for africa through that part of the world into a blood conflict of cultures and terrorist/militant groups that still rages on
