On January 12, 2018, a state trooper was shot during a struggle with a armed assailant. He was alone with the shooter on an isolated road while bleeding out. As he was grasping for air, enduring intense pain in his shoulder and chest, he heard a car nearby. While the trooper was fearing for his life in his current vulnerable state, a civilian driving by, stopped and took immediate action. The heroic civilian drew his gun and exchanged heated gun fire with the assailant. In the end, the assailant was killed and the life of the state trooper was saved. The life of the trooper was spared due to an armed civilian. This catastrophe was both committed and stopped by civilians with firearms. Tragedies like these spark the debate of gun control, should guns be regulated by the government and to what extent? 30,000 American lives are lost each year due to guns, estimated by Barack Obama. 30,000 lives are ended with guns, this doesn’t include the families and friends affected by such occurrences. There has been a rise in the death toll of mass shootings and the frequency of them, the deadliest only occurred last year. In 2018, there have been twenty nine mass shootings alone (Gun Violence Archive). The safety of all Americans are called into jeopardy, so the paramount question is, to what extent should the distribution and utilization of guns be regulated by the government? Gun control opposers, those who own guns and fight for the right of gun ownership, believe that any alteration
Dhrumil Patel Prof: kevin Eddings English Comp. 1 Date: April, 18th 2017 Gun Control in United Sates Gun Control is the most debated argument in United States of America today. Many government officials still hold to the 2nd Amendment, which bluntly states, "... the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. " This being part of the Constitution, it bears a lot of credibility.
Currently, in 2017, there have been 51 mass shootings, in which four on more individuals were harmed and or killed by individual with firearms, in the US (Gun Violence Archive, 2017). Yet the National Rifle Association (NRA), which is pro-gun and 2nd Amendment, has push and lobbied vigorously against firearm regulation. The NRA has had a strong showing in congressional support for many years and have always used the constitution as the base of their debate against advocacy groups like the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence and the Brady Campaign who want stricter national regulation and enforcement of firearms. This debate seems meaningless if citizens are prone to violence by those given access to the means of their destructive acts. Our nation has experienced major loss from mass shooting incidents, we should not fear losing our constitutional right to firearms but instead fight to have it benefit us all in a safe effective
The article discusses the gun control movement since 2012 school shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, focusing on control efforts at the state level. Topics include the failure of gun control efforts at the national level and the role of gun-rights lobbyists; a discussion of the pro-reform lobby, such as Americans for Responsible Solutions (ARS), and Everytown for Gun Safety; and control measures such as background checks, bans on assault weapons, and bans on weapons in public spaces.
Another reason I do not agree that the government should endorse stricter gun control measures is because I do not believe the gun in itself is the real issue. The real issue behind all the crimes and violence associated with guns is the owner of the gun. Results from multiple surveys stated that citizens of the U.S own around 300 million firearms. When asking those owners what they use their gun for, 67% said self-defense, 66% said hunting, and 41% said target shooting. A study showed that in 2000 guns were used for self-defense roughly 100,000 times a year.
The incident is recorded as the deadliest shooting incident in the US and surprisingly, it is only one of numerous examples. Thus, gun
Gun control and gun rights have become such a hot topic throughout the United States that people are beginning to question if the fault of such violence actually lies with guns. This isn’t the issue, the problem is that the US government is incapable of passing gun legislation, social media blames mental illness for mass shootings, and gun policies aren’t strict enough on selling guns. The only danger in having a gun is when it is put in the hands of the wrong person. Due to strong opposing ideals between both the Republican and Democratic Party within the house and senate, the American government has been incapable of passing adequate gun legislation.
Gun control is what restricts people from buying and using guns, but these laws are not strengthened at the extent they need to be strengthened. This leads to many people getting these guns and using them to cause mass shootings all over the U.S. For example, according to the Council on Foreign Relationship, a news article that covers major world issues, in 2017, mass shootings at a music festival in Las Vegas and at a church near San Antonio have rekindled the gun control debate (“U.S. Gun Policy: Global Comparisons”). The fact that gun control is still not tightened is a huge margin and error, and still causes mass shootings as we just covered. Many people have said that we should not allow guns to be purchased, which would seem like the logical option. However, according to the same source, Council on Foreign Relationship, some states, such as Idaho, Alaska, and Kansas, have passed various laws attempting to nullify
Gun control is a concept that implies that if there are a set of regulations that restrict how civilians sell, possess,or use firearms, the abuse of them won’t be a possible danger to the unarmed. Those who side completely with this concept are known as civilians who are pro-gun control. Others who are under the belief that no possible amount of laws can tame the abuse of firearms and should only be handled by the military are known as those who are anti-gun control. Truthfully, I position myself amongst those who are pro-gun control, however I feel the laws that are currently in action to help maintain control of guns are not the most sincere and should be re-established. First off, the existing gun control laws are as
It is such a tragedy with the violent death of a loved one, so in order to prevent other deaths then gun control must be issued. Guns are very powerful weapons, and should not be offered to just anyone. If guns fall into the wrong hands it can be a very dangerous and scary situation. Most of the time officers are not always quick to address a situation, and sometimes situations involving guns can be out of the officer’s
Gun Control Gun control has become a polarizing and controversial issue around the globe. There have been many reported issues of mass shootings both in schools and in the public, making it a hot button issue. Proponents argue that, if the government strictly controls the ownership of guns, such tragedies can be prevented. Most Americans have an obsession with guns because the law allows them to do so. Therefore, they are always ready to scoff at anyone trying to control gun ownership.
The number of incidents of gun violence last year in the United States was about 60,000. In recent years, the number of mass shooting has risen to about one mass shooting per day in the United States. The country is divided with some wanting to reevaluate our gun control laws and either ban or add additional regulations to the purchase of guns. Others say it is our right for Americans to own guns and something the founding fathers considered important to put in the Bill of Rights. The number of firearm sales has risen with the number of mass shooting many Americans question if banning guns or certain guns could help decrease the number of gun violence deaths.
“Half of the casualties occurred during a nine-hour stretch from Saturday evening to early yesterday”, according to police. Among the dead: a 7-year-old boy killed outside his home shortly before midnight on Saturday. “Amari Brown was hit by a bullet ‘that was meant for his father”, police tell the Chicago Sun-Times. This two case are from the thousand cases that has been recorded and it is enough for us to conclude, that having an own firearm are not a good decision but it will lead to a chaos and disturbing the peace and harmony in this country and of
Fifteen thousand Americans dead, thirteen thousand from guns in twenty-seventeen, making sixty percent of murders involving guns. We are told over and over again, do not politicize events involving shoots. Americans, kids, adults, everyday people, how many more of them have to die before something is done? There is a need for gun control and the time to do it is now. Gun control will prevent more mass shootings, like it did in Australia and the United Kingdom, reduce murders drastically, as seen in other countries, and kill off donations to politicians, removing the political influence of guns.
Less gun, more beautiful life Now, gun ownership is being legalized in many countries, but crimes committed by the people who have guns are likely to imminently endanger the life or property safety of innocent citizens. There has been a mass shootings in the United States recently (Newman & Hartman 2017). As a result, it made the controversial topic “whether the government should control guns more strictly” have more debate value. Gun control is defined as a way that aim for “protecting the safety of citizens through limits on and regulation of firearms” (“GUN CONTROL:A.” 1984). There is an argument that the government may control the number of people can legally posses a gun and the time the people could posses a gun more strictly.
