Born in 1765 in Westborough, Massachusetts, Eli Whitney saved up money working as a tutor to go to Yale. When he earned a degree he found himself stranded in Georgia when a tutoring job fell through. He was fortunate enough to find a place to stay. While there he picked up that farmers in the area were having trouble with the amount of time and energy it took to separate cotton from cottonseeds. This simple problem seriously slowed down production. He decided to solve the problem and the cotton gin was born. The whole machine took 6 months to build but changed the entire cotton production in the south.
