Elizabeth Glaser and Mary Fisher, in their informal AIDS speeches at their respective National Conventions in 1992, provide personal accounts of the effect of AIDS and additionally plead with American citizens to take a stand and quit ignoring the issue at stake. Their tones vary from a sentimental and personal tone to an engaging political tone consistently in their speeches directed at American citizens. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, it was still widely believed only minorities (including homosexuals and people of color) could be infected with the AIDS virus. Elizabeth Glaser makes it clear that race and sexuality have nothing to do with your risk of contracting AIDS. She also addresses the reality of America unfair against these minorities: “poor people, gay people, people of color”. Glaser uses parallel structure to emphasize that minorities are highly discriminated against in society and it needs to change. It also adds to the overall message that everyone is at risk for AIDS. Glaser continues on to claim she is an unusual speaker for the men and women infected with AIDS: “a well-to-do white woman”. This demonstrates the idea most people had in the 1990s of white people not having the same problems as minorities. In Mary Fisher’s speech, she compares herself to the minorities and declares they are no less important than her. Fisher uses parallelism in back-to-back sentences, beginning with ‘Though I am…’ and then provides examples of minorities, including a “lonely gay man” and a struggling black infant. The water gates scandal was a major political scandal that occurred in the United States in the 1970s, following a break in at the DNC headquarters at water gate office in Washington D.C. and President Nixon’s administration tried to cover it up. On July 25, 1974 Barbara Jordan gave a speech on the impeachment of President Nixon during the impeachment hearing. She gave a strong passionate and well-rounded speech.
In the reading by Peter Redman, he raises the argument that the ‘AIDS carrier” becomes the central representation of the HIV epidemic and how the representations of HIV cannot be narrowed down to one cause. In addition, the ‘AIDS carrier’ is represented as monster and the carrier spreads HIV from the deviant subpopulations to the mainstream. Also, AIDS has been connected to social and moral issues and singles out groups like gay men, black people, and young single women. These groups are then viewed as diseased subpopulations and that causes others to feel disgust and panic. The heterosexual men are then afraid to have physical or emotional contact with men in general and that’s why boundaries of heterosexual masculinity were produced.
On September 5,1995, many individuals gathered around to listen to, then, First Lady, Hillary Clinton. Her speech was the United Nations Fourth National Conference of Women and was given in Beijing China. This conference was held to help reach greater equal opportunity for woman around the world. The speech was solely based on women’s rights and targeted the audience to peruse the goal of making women rights human rights. Hillary Clinton addressed problems that many other countries faced regarding the liberties of women and she also insisted on why it was important for women to be granted human rights.
American journalist and politician, Clare Boothe Luce, in her opening speech at the 1960 Women’s National Press Club meeting, prepares her audience, qualifying and defending her forthcoming criticism. Luce’s purpose is to provoke thought in the journalist’s minds on what journalism is really about at its core. She adopts a frank and humorous tone to best capture the attention of her intended audience of female journalists. Through, appealing to the ethos, logos, and pathos with flattery, syllogism, and rhetorical questioning to prepare the audience for her message: “the tendency of the American press to sacrifice journalistic integrity in favor of the perceived public demand for sensationalist stories.” In the first paragraph of her speech, Luce assures the audience that “[she is] happy and flattered to be a guest of honor…”
During the Progressive Era, women began reforms to address social, political, and economic issues within society. Some addressed the issues with education, healthcare, and political corruption. Others worked to raise wages and improve work conditions. Among these (women) is Carrie Chapman Catt, a leader of the women’s suffrage movement. Beginning her career as a national women’s rights activist in 1890, she was asked to address Congress about the proposed suffrage amendment shortly after two years.
This quote is important because in the beginning she was feeling like the only colored person and then it moved to how she felt out of place at times. But in the end she sees that she has always been one. This narrative agrees with how I understand race, because we are all one.
The argument over a woman’s right to choose over the life of an unborn baby has been a prevalent issue in America for many years. As a birth control activist, Margaret Sanger is recognized for her devotion to the pro-choice side of the debate as she has worked to provide sex education and legalize birth control. As part of her pro-choice movement, Sanger delivered a speech at the Sixth International Neo-Malthusian and Birth Control Conference in March of 1925. This speech is called “The Children’s Era,” in which she explains how she wants the twentieth century to become the “century of the child.” Margaret Sanger uses pathos throughout her speech as she brings up many of the negative possibilities that unplanned parenthood can bring for both children and parents.
Southern University’s Founders’ Day Dr. Mae C. Jemison Speech Dr. Mae Jemison is the first African American woman to go to space. Currently, she works with National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and is a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. On March 9, 2016, she gave a brilliant speech to everybody present in the F.G Clark Activity center at Southern University on the occasion of the 136th Southern University Founders’ Day.

Steele begins addressing the issue by saying that “ By making black the color of preference, these mandates have re-burdened society with the very marriage of color and preference( in reverse) that we set out to eradicate.” In essence Shelby states that by allowing blacks to get a free privilege that whites do not have, the same issue that people were attempting to eradicate had just been reversed except this time in favor of African Americans. Shelby further explains that “ In integrated situations where blacks must compete with whites who may be better prepared, these explanations may quickly wear thin and expose the individual to racial as well as personal self doubt.” By using the example of college Shelby shows people that just because something is free does not mean it is beneficial in fact it may have the opposite effect it set out to achieve. At this point the audience has been made aware of a problem on several occasion and at this point in time Shelby begins to elaborate on the issue creating more intricate situations in which the free privilege will affect African Americans in the future.
