As an English student this semester, I have learned how to develop essays in an appropriate educated way in English 101. I have learned how to find and properly use different sources in my essays as well as improving on MLA format. This class has also improved my writing skills in my work place. I presently work as a secretary for a company, and my job consists of writing letters to people from time to time. The skills that I have learned has dramatically improved those letters, allowing them to appear more professional. In the past, I would search for ways to write a decent paper; now I have the skills to perform my own paper without having to rely on having assistance from someone else. It takes me a little while to develop a starting point, but once I have the first sentence, my words come to mind much quicker. I have also caught myself listening to the words that people speak instead of listening to what they are speaking of. I have improved on my speaking with the public because of this class. It has helped me to stop and reflect about what I intend on saying instead of speaking everyday language to the customers. If I explain something to a customer, I explain it with a well-developed sentence instead of a short simple sentence that I usually speak. …show more content…
This is my second semester as a distance learner and I believe that I did an exceptional job at my work. My strengths in the distance learning format is my ability to set goals and be well-disciplined enough to reach those goals by the deadlines. With the ability of being organized and self-disciplined will assist me in everything I do in college and at
The 214 English hybrid course has got me into thinking more about constructing a strong thesis and creating solid topic sentences. Being able to identify my thesis has also helped my writing have better organization that helps the overall flow of my essay. With blogging incorporated into our academic criteria it was certainly something different. Blogging geared me into reading more articles and analysis the authors use of rhetorical devices. Being in English 101 has impacted three different types of writing processes: drafting, revising, and editing. Before I started this class, I never made drafts; I only did pre-writes and the final copy of the essay. Now, I do the pre-writes, then type it and make the draft, and then fix any errors in it. Another writing process that has improved is revising because now instead of reading what I wrote myself, I let my friends, classmates, and teachers read it to see if they understand what I’m writing and if they see any errors. This makes my editing process easier because I know what mistakes I made.
I learned how to formulate a restricted, unified, and precise thesis statement. I am now able to organize essay content into introduction, body and conclusion paragraphs. I also learned how to construct and organize unified, coherent, and well-developed paragraphs. I am able to apply grammar and usage rules correctly and develop clear, concise sentences. I learned about parallelism, run-on, comma splices and sentences.
My high school English class never taught me any of the things I have learned in here, so now I can proudly say when I go off to college that I know how to write a college academic essay because of Dual English

Finally my grammar has improved constantly throughout the course. I was able to see my mistakes and how to fix them when I was able to read my grader’s notes. I learned to ask for assistance when I encountered a problem.
Each experience has made me continue to grow and constantly learning something new. I have truly enjoyed this English class and know what I have learned will be tremendously

Other than that, it made me develop the essay writing skills necessary for success in my studies at the university level. This English course also taught me how powerful written words can be, and how the delivery of the tone is important for the reader. The tone of a narrative is different than the tone of a research, where the difference makes the paper. Also, the power in written words tells how much it is crucial to mankind.
