(“Slavery in Africa”, para 13) The people had to do hard work for the Americans for free or if they fought back they would’ve been killed or worse. The slaves did America a huge favor since they weren’t allowed to stop working, they got a lot of work done which let America have so much crop and material that the African Americans did for them. Throughout the 1400s to the early 1900s, an industrial revolution began, bringing with it economic and social change. Africa was a place where slaves were collected, first by the Muslims and later on the Americas and West Europe. They were collected in Africa because most of the native people found in the New World, found by Christopher Columbus, died of diseases brought by the Spanish and other foreigners. Also, slaves were needed to do the work that the plantation owners didn't want to do, such as collect cotton. Most places such as the Americas began an industrial revolution.

However, European states are largely blamed for the slave trade, because of the large implications it had on Africa. African kingdoms were exploited for slaves in return for weapons, gunpowder and gold, which doesn’t compare to the millions of people that have been forcibly relocated to work as slaves. In the BBC News article by Will Ross, it is stated that “There has also been an impact on African culture”. With the loss of millions of people, African states had slowly lost their ability to gain economic, social and cultural independence, because as soon as slavery was abolished, European states immediately returned to colonise most of the continent. Ghana is a prime example of a country that had to deal with the burden of the slave trade where “the scene in many rural areas appears to have changed little with grass thatched mud-walled huts”, this is inadvertently caused by the transatlantic slave trade.

In West Africa, families are surrounded by intense poverty, causing children to work at a young age to help try and support themselves and their loved ones. Children sometimes end up working on cocoa farms because they are told by traffickers that the job pays well. This is not the case, most of them get paid under $2 an hour or not at all which is well below the poverty line. Because families don’t have enough money some children are sold to traffickers, when this happens the families usually don’t know that the children will not get a good education, and the work environment is very dangerous.
