Over fourteen years ago, the everyday lives of the American people were forever changed. Fear, confusion, and displacement rushed our minds as the attack on 9/11 took place. This marked the beginning of the war we know today as Operation Enduring Freedom. Throughout the last decade and a half, the Army’s professional character has remained intact. Military expertise, honorable service, esprit de corps and stewardship hold us together during these times of despair, but trust within our nation’s security overtook the thoughts of the American people as they watch the second plane hit the north Twin Tower in New York City. Trust is the “bedrock of the Army Profession and the bedrock of our relationship with the American people”. Internal, external, and ethical civil-military relationships make the trust the essential components of the Army Profession of Arms. Internal trust is the “reliance on the character, competence, and commitment of Army …show more content…
American soldiers take an oath to defend the United States of America from all enemies’ foreign and domestic. The American people trust that the Army will protect the freedom of their everyday lives. As army professional, we train and live by ethical morals in order to remain combat effective and efficient. Our military expertise gives society security that they can rest peacefully. Excerpts from the Amy soldier’s creed, state, “I will serve the people of the United States and live the Army values”, and “I am a guardian of freedom and the American way of life”. This is part of what we live by when we raise our right has and take the pledge. We do not only pledge to serve the government but we pledge to serve the freedom of the American people. The confidence society has within the Army is vital and invaluable. Their trust and safety is the reason why we
As of 2013, about 1.4 million people were actively serving in the armed forces. Not only do these soldiers experience hardships such as sacrificing their lives and dreams but they also gain a sense of brotherhood due to close relationships made with other soldiers and they experience feelings of hope through the possibility of recovery if injured. These experiences were captured and depicted in a photograph taken by Laura Rauch, who is a part of the Military’s Stars and Stripes newspaper. In this photograph, solider Kyle Hockenberry had been conducting a routine patrol on June 15 on the outskirts of Haji Ramuddin until an explosion erupted, giving Kyle Hockenberry such extensive injuries that he needed immediate attention.
There are three main ideas that every American takes pride in, which is their country, freedom, and military. Americans holds their heads high when it comes to its military. From the Army, to the Marines, to the Navy Seals, and all the other branches of military, Americans are both proud and fully supportive of its troops. Sadly, that pride was shaken on April 22, 2004 when famous NFL player and former Army Ranger, Pat Tillman was killed in Afghanistan over friendly fire. After Tillman’s death, the Army tried several time to cover up Pat’s actual cause of death to try and use him for propaganda recruitment purposes.
James Fallows’ article, “The Tragedy of the American Military”, presents an argument on whether the military nowadays is cared or thought about as much as it used to be. Throughout the article, Fallows explains how different the military is treated today. He believed that the military was understood better in the past than in the present, and he provided examples, including some personal experiences, that shows Americans not valuing the military as they once did. Fallows had his own type of writing that enhances the audience’s reading experience. Through his examples and sources, Fallows makes a strong argument on why the military isn’t as close to the American public as it once was.
This freedom that we enjoy is not free, it comes on the back of our servicemembers. They took the risk and rolled the dice and lost. To measure that devotion to our common ideals and freedom is unimaginable.” Finally, we should respect those who serve and have served because battle can change a man.
For generations, the American public has been subject to the general news media. This subjectivity leaves audiences in thrall, in confusion, in humor, and, often, in anger. News outlets of all forms have a major influence on the general American populace. Daily news broadcasts help the public to stay in the know about major issues-both domestic and foreign. If someone wants to know the goings on in the Italian wine industry, or the German film industry, they might check the internet, but would never look for information in their hometown newspaper.
Soldiers like him with their unwavering commitment to put the missions first and do whatever it takes to complete it, are the reason why the United States of America are one of the most respected countries in military power. Audie Murphy’s actions truly display what it means to be a great leader and putting his team’s well-being before
The praises that you receive shouldn’t be based on the mere fact that you join but maybe for those who actually wants to serve and protect. In contrast, he says “Make that choice without looking back to see the cheering faces of those who tell you your duty is to do what they are not doing for purposes you may not know nor share” (Gillman 680). None the less, the author let the reader know that these young men and women risk their own lives for purposes which may not be of any value to themselves or the country. As a result, those purposes doesn’t deserve the praises that are
Admiral James M. Loy’s assertion remains valid when examining the response of the Coast Guard during 9/11. Auxiliarist, active duty personnel, and civilian partners all exhibited leadership capabilities of humility and resourcefulness. Although the act of terror took the lives of two thousand Americans, over five hundred thousand were evacuated from ground zero (Homes); Coast Guard personnel remained true to their core values and the expectations of Alexander Hamilton in its
Soldiers don’t necessarily have anything wrong with their behavior, however it causes them to be outcast as rude or impolite. They don’t feel as though there is anything wrong with their behavior and struggle to adjust to what is expected of them. In “Soldier’s Home,” Krebs, the protagonist, talks about how he wants a girl but he doesn’t “want to work for her.”(85) He feels that courting a girl would include having to lie to her about his interests and experiences in order to impress her. This mirrors the way soldiers feel like they have to lie to people in order to gain their interest.
Though situations may arise where trust and survival concur, in order to secure safety, placing trust within others no longer remains an option, whether they be strangers, acquaintances, or young children. Once safety is guaranteed, the concept of trust no longer exists, as trust is either diminished by the war or facing misinterpretation. However, the novel does not have only negative outlooks on reliance and faith; trust that was lost can and was
“Every citizen should be a soldier. This was the case with the Greeks and Romans, and must be that of every free state”, said Thomas Jefferson. Since the beginning of history, men have been drafted into the wars whether it be by force or simply choosing to fight for their country. Millions upon trillions of families have had their families cruelly torn apart from the loss of military men. There are multiple military forces in which you have to pledge to confirm your loyalty to our country to even be involved.
In the United States, serving in the military is seen as a model of true patriotism, and rightfully so. Service members train for 10 weeks in their transition from civilian to a soldier. They train to be able to endure all the hardships that may come their way. Service members have to be in the best physical shape to serve and because of all that they do, they are thought of as brave and selfless people. Service members make extreme sacrifices to defend our country and act selflessly by doing so; it is fitting that they are seen as heroes by many Americans.
The next line of The Soldier's Creed states that they are a warrior and a member of a team. It does not matter which rank you hold you, are a warrior first and you are always a member of a team. From being a private in the Army along with all of your other comrades, to a Non Commissioned Officer, you will always have a team. Non Commissioned Officers have a different team, which consists of other Non Commissioned Officers, but it is still the same concept. Both average soldiers and Non Commissioned Officers serve the people of the United States and live the Army values.
The United States Armed Forces is known for its agility and strength with the enabling ability to fight and win wars; however, our force is facing its own internal battle that seems to be diminishing its force, manpower, and morale. The invisible war as it is called in the media, documentaries, and books displayed the most shameful and well-kept secret within the military expanding back into the 1960’s. In recent years, this battle has drawn the attention of media due to the unprofessional and heinous act of its service members. This act consists of sexual assault and harassment, which is undermining the image and characteristics of a well-structured organization. This volunteer-based force is a complex combination of men and women from all
This article explains how the people of this country decide how we are viewed. It says, “the American people, gets to make the judgment of the extent to which we are a profession and they will do so based on the bond of trust we create with them based on the ethical, exemplary manner in which we employ our capabilities.” (“The Profession of Arms”, 2010) Without that trust, the people would not respect our profession and without their respect most Soldiers would struggle to return respect to the people. Loyalty is defined as, “the feeling of support of allegiance.”
