Edmund Burke once said, “The greater the power, the more dangerous the abuse”. George Orwell’s Animal Farm is about the animal's rebellion against their owner. The pigs are the only ones that can read and write. They abuse their abilities to gain power over the animals. Animal Farm shows that there are many ways power will corrupt good intentions, such as Ignorance, Manipulation, and Power Hoarding Behavior. Ignorance allows corruption on Animal Farm. “Boxer who now had time to think things over, voiced the general feeling by saying: “If comrade Napoleon says it, it must be right”. And from then on he adopted the maxim, “Napoleon is always right”(Orwell Page 56). Boxer is explaining that anything Napoleon does or say is always right. Boxer’s ignorance allows him to believe what Napoleon says. In addition, “All the sheep bursts out into a tremendous bleating of- FOUR LEGS GOOD, TWO LEGS BETTER! FOUR LEGS GOOD, TWO LEGS BETTER! FOUR LEGS GOOD TWO LEGS BETTER!” (Orwell 134). The pigs are teaching the sheep to say whatever they want them to say. The sheep are just blindly following the pigs. “The others said of Squealer that he could turn black into white”(Orwell 16). The author is explaining how Squealer is a brilliant speaker. This will lead to Squealer’s manipulation corrupting the farm. In addition, ‘He had seemed to oppose the windmill, simply as a maneuver to get rid of Snowball, who was too dangerous character and a bad influence”(Orwell 58). Squealer is making the other animals think that he does not support the windmill, but really he is just trying to get rid of Snowball. This shows how manipulative Squealer is.
