In many of life’s decisions, what a person truly chooses between is whether to listen to the emotions of the heart or the logic of the head. In any argument, the outcome depends on whether or not the speaker can effectively appeal to one’s emotions, logic, or sense of ethics. That appeal is also known as pathos, logos, or ethos. Three examples of these appeals can be found in The Norton Mix, in the essays “I Want a Wife” by Judy Brady, “A Proposal to Abolish Grading” by Paul Goodman, and Michael Levin’s “The Case for Torture”. Brady’s essay showcases pathos, Goodman’s appeal is to logic, and “The Case for Torture” shows an appeal to ethics. Brady writes a satiric essay about the stereotypes of married life, showcasing what a man should ‘expect’ from his wife. He uses logos to give a solid logical ground in his examination of why grading should be abolished, and the system that should be instated to take the place of the grades that oppress. Speaking of the tests that Harvard and other institutes of higher education use for admission purposes, he says “Presumably, these college-entrance tests are tailored for what Harvard and similar institutions want. By the same logic, would not an employer do far better to apply his own job aptitude test rather than to rely on the vagaries of Harvard section-men?” (Par 5). By applying logic, he makes a compelling argument for the abolishment of ‘universal’ testing, to be replaced by job-specific criteria. He goes on to speak about how the ‘superiors’ of society limit success by grading, saying “But I submit that this set-up itself makes it impossible for the student to become the master, to have grown up, and to commence on his own. Grades are as valuable as star-shaped stickers, yet they have the power to lay the foundation of our entire lives. The grades we earn have no commercial value, but students invest millions into taking a class to get a grade. In Jerry Farber’s essay “A Young Person’s Guide to the Grading System,” he crushes society’s constant need for competition by pointing out all of the major flaws in the grading system and offering a new credit system as a solution. Farber is correct by claiming that the grading system is flawed, stressful, and overall, useless. Farber builds his essay on the basis that grades are problematic for the school system to use.
Therefore, this weakness does not detract from his strong use of appeals, ethos, and his persuasive use of logos. Essentially, Sloan delivers an effective argument for his readers through his use of ethos and logos, aside from what might be considered weak pathos. For his audience of everyone, his use of ethos and logos are strong, since he is a highly educated, and a critical thinker that uses logos very effectively. He successfully executes his thoughtful thesis that patriotic slogans should not necessarily be taken at face value.

The United States is a country in which every day is as much as changes in their justice systems, as in the constitution in order to defend the rights of citizens and improve as a country. Is America a country completely free of injustice, discrimination and respect for the rights of citizens ?. There are two things related to the improvement and stability of the country. According to Obama's Speech he was trying to make many changes and implement new laws for equality of all people as well as a fair justice system for all citizens regardless of race. Rhetorical Analysis of David Brook’s “People Like Us” The goal of argumentative writing implies the fact of persuading an audience that an idea is valid, or maybe more valid than somebody else’s. With the idea of making his argument successful, and depending on which topic is being established, the author uses different strategies which Aristoteles defined as “Greek Appeals”. Pathos, the first appeal, generates emotions in the reader, and it may have the power of influencing what he believes. Ethos, or ethical appeals, convince the reader by making him believe in the author’s credibility.
Ethos has to do with credibility and establishing a good relationship with the audience. This can also be expressed through your tone and confidence of the matter. If someone is more confident through his or her tone, it'll attract the reader to continue reading without questioning the validity of the argument. In my personal statement, I was telling a story that I have told others many times before to a variety of people. My tone remains subtle and informal so that the audience feels like we are having a conversation.
The Grading System: Completely Necessary Grades are an important part of the school system. Grades set the extraordinary students apart from the ordinary ones. In Jerry Farber’s essay, “A Young Person’s Guide to the Grading System,” he argues that grades are the only motivation students have in school. Farber even calls it “phony motivation.” He argues that students do not actually learn anything.
The assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. devastated a large majority of people around the world. His works of nonviolent acts against racism motivated many, including civil rights activist Cesar Chavez, to solve matters without resorting to inhumane behaviors. Inspired by Dr. King Jr.’s work, Chavez and his union of labor workers devoted themselves to helping those in need through peaceful protests. Similar methods are proven to be successful; Mahatma Gandhi, for instance, gained a great deal of supporters because of his pacifism and tranquil methods of boycotting against British domination. Despite brutal and savage methods of persuasion slowly gaining support, Chavez proves that nonviolent actions are superior; he does so by using ethos in order to uphold moral standards, logos (in reference to the past), and pathos to appeal to the emotions of his audience.

The meaning behind Ethos is to appeal to ethics, which means convincing readers of the author’s credibility, meanwhile Pathos is an appeal to emotion, and is used in literature to convince readers of an argument by getting their emotions involved. Last but not least, Logos is the appeal to logic and is used to persuade readers using a force of reason. These terms are important in MLK’s Letter from Birmingham Jail because the foundation of the letter is built upon ideas of Ethos, Pathos, and Logos.

As we look at marriages in today’s day and age, it is difficult for a man to be more dominant over his wife. Women are allowed to work in any profession they choose, and do not need to rely on a man for money. However, centuries ago in the progressive era, men were superior and dominant over their wife. Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s novel “The Yellow Wallpaper” portrays this type of image where a woman is controlled and trapped in her marriage by her husband John. In this era, they considered articles exposing issues like this as muckraking.
There are many writers that affect our emotions or that make us think that his or her statements are reasonable, whether they are authors of books, or script writers for a movie or a play. In Morgan Spurlock’s film, Supersize Me, he uses three common rhetorical strategies: ethos, pathos, and logos. He uses all three effectively, however pathos has the greatest effect out of all three rhetorical strategies. Spurlock uses ethos, or ethical appeal, in his film.
In 1741, Jonathan Edwards delivered a sermon called “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” to a congregation in Enfield, Connecticut. This sermon was so influential and poignant that today it has transformed into a piece of literature that many study in classes. In the 1970’s women were expected to stay at home and take care of the household. They were usually not expected to further their education, but instead take care of the children or tend to their husbands’ needs. In 1972 Judy Brady decided to let the readers of Ms. Magazine know how she felt about her “duties”. In her short essay, “Why I Want a Wife,” Brady uses pathos to connect and appeal to the reader’s emotions while explaining why she wants a wife.
