The odyssey essay
Today I'm going to talk about why I think Odysseus is a hero. Have you ever found yourself in a very tough situation that you do not know how to get out of? Odysseus has had that happen to him a lot that you will read about in this essay. Some facts are that he saved his men by fighting a cyclops, fought for a whole day straight, and led his army back home after being gone for 20 years. Odysseus is a hero because he is wise, a good leader, and strong. Odysseus is a hero because he uses his whits, His leadership, and his strength to save his men and fight through adversity.
Odysseus is a hero because he is smart. For example in lines 247-250, In the cyclops, he knows that he cannot kill the cyclops immediately cause if he does then they will be trapped in the cave and die. In addition, Odysseus says, “ If I killed him we perished there as well, For we could never move his ponderous doorway slab aside.” Thus what Odysseus is trying to tell his men, Is that they need to get on the cyclops' good side, because he is the only way they can get out of his home. Later in the story, it proves vital

In lines 57-59 in the episode sailing from Troy, he fights in a battle all day. Clearly, Odysseus shows his strength here by fighting for 24 hours. If he lost the fight he and all of his men would be skinned alive and killed. In this episode, Odysseus fights the Cicones. Later in the story, it shows that it is important because if he stops fighting them he and all of his men would have died. It tells us that in lines 60-64. Together with the evidence of his strength, it is easy to see that Odysseuss is super strong, and has fantastic endurance to be able to fight for a whole day. Also, a good comparison to someone who can fight all day is a superhero. Finally, Odysseus should be a hero because of how strong he is and because he is able to fight a battle all
I believe Odysseus is not a hero because he let many people die. He also didn't save his men from the Cyclops “He couldn't save his people.” I personally think that he didn’t try to save them at all. Odysseus did not save his people in time. According to Homer, “ While he fought only to save his life, to bring his shipmates home.
Although people might say Odysseus isn’t a hero, people beg to differ. He has had so many heroic activities he has conquered and he has been smart about all of his adventures he’s
Andrew Son Mrs. Slater English 1 April 3, 2023 Odysseus Cannot Be A Hero Poseidon keeping Odysseus away from his family would have saved all of Ithaca. Odysseus’s poor behavioral attitude of Hubris that both violates Greek values and modern standards shows how he should not be considered a hero. According to the Long Island Psychology Center, Atara Wertentheil explains that “arrogant thinkers are likely to have less adequate performance at work, in daily tasks, or in their personal endeavors” (Wertentheil). A hero’s strife to protect their fellow men has not been shown in most of the epic poem yet shows off violence to the people he loves most. In Gareth Hind’s adaptation of Homer’s
Odysseus’ desire to be well known as a hero occasionally overpowers his own common sense, leading him to dangerous situations that could have otherwise been avoided. Nonetheless, his fame is hardly diminished by these mistakes, as Odysseus always comes back to battle stronger than ever before. Throughout The Odyssey, Homer strategically portrayed Odysseus as a remarkable
Him and his men gets stucks in the cave with the cyclopes so there was no way out for them. Odysseus had to come up with a plan to save his men and to get out of the cave. His great idea to get out of there was to get the cyclops drunk and stab it in the eye with a olive branch. This scene of the story showed how Odysseus wise choice got him and his men out of that situation. An example to back up this evidence “drunk, hiccuping,he dribbles streams of liquor and bits of men”.
Odysseus is a hero. He is a hero because he is brave, loyal to his family, and he is also a great leader. A hero should be someone that is a leader in wherever they go, and whatever they do. People look up to heros. We’ve all been that one kid, dressing up as spiderman, or superman.
Odysseus could be considered an epic hero because he is brave, a vast traveler, and considered a great warrior. He is brave because he was willing to listen to the siren sound. In book 12 Circe recommends “if you wish to listen let the men tie you in the lugger, hand and foot, back to the mast, lashed to the mast so you may hear those harpies, thrilling voices…” Right after that Odysseus got tied in the lugger and listened to the sound of the sirens, this shows that he is brave. Odysseus is considered a great warrior because he fought in the Trojan war, before the text begins Homer states “All have retuned except Odysseus, the crafty and astute ruler of Ithaka…” Odysseus was used in the Trojan war and he and his crew have not returned home yet making him a vast traveler.
Odysseus authenticates his status as a hero using three key traits: the journey he takes, his excellent leadership, and his ability to change. Loses happened, and mistakes occurred. But, what kind of hero doesn’t make mistakes? They make mistakes, and they learn from them. The Odyssey teaches that a hero isn’t just somebody showered with heavenly power, or a warrior with an undefeated record in the arena.
In the epic story the Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is returning from the Trojan war, and on his way home he finds many obstacles ahead of him. Odysseus is the ruler of Ithaca and he is trying to return home to his land. Many creatures try and stop him from achieving his goal of returning home, but he and his crew have to push through and get home. Odysseus portrays bravery and courage leading his crew through these tough challenges. Odysseus heroically leads his crew and himself through dangerous obstacles, but also foolishly endangers them during the journey home.
Some think Odysseus is a hero for many reasons, mainly because he helps many people including his family and his crew. Even when terrible things happen to him and his crew he perseveres and continues on his journey home. Even though Odysseus and his men do bad things like eating the sun god’s cattle there still are many reasons why he is a hero. One reason to support my claim is that he saves his crew many times. One example is when they sailed by the Sirens.
Odysseus’ heroicness proves that he is a hero. In the beginning Odysseus proves to be heroic when he states “Have we never been... In danger before this? Did I not keep my nerve, and use my wits to find a way out for us?”, according to line 41. Odysseus’ heroicness reveals that he is a hero because he saved his men and got his men back home safe.
In the odyssey, the king of ithica aka odysseus is on his way home, but on his way home he faces many challenges, some include the cyclops, and many different monsters. Eventually after a long hard fight, odysseus makes his way home. The odyssey gives a perfect example of what a hero is, and how easily it is for a person to change. At first, Odysseus may seem like a hero due to his courage and strength, but later on in the story things take a turn for the worse for him and his reputation,
Odysseus is an epic hero because of his bravery and confidence during every obstacle throughout his journey In Part 1 whie Odysseus is about to come across cyclops cave, he says “I brought along and victuals in a bag, for in my bones I knew some towering brute would be upon so soon- all outward power, a wild man, ignorant of civility. “ Odysseus is showing his bravery of not being petrified of what he might come across, like the cyclops. Odysseus has no intention of harming them, but he is not sure what their intention is. This example is important because not only does it show confidence in himself, he also shows confidence in his men. In Part 2 Odysseus also shows his confidence in his men in part 2 where Eurylochus says, “Are you flesh and blood, Odysseus, to endure more than a man can?
You must be made all of iron" (279-80). While Odysseus is a strong man and a hard worker, it is always better to be on his good side, as he can be very temperamental( third source). We see that he has a temper multiple times throughout his journey, but the most prominent time, perhaps, is when he has the suitors killed when he returns to Ithaca. In conclusion, Odysseus is a hero because of his many great qualities.
