Scrooge’s Transformation Essay In the Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, the main character, Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by three spirits, past, present, and future. When the spirits take Scrooge to the past present and future, Scrooge undergoes a major transformation Dickens demonstrates this by showing that Scrooge changed from a lonely, greedy man, that didn’t like Christmas and dislike people to a generous man that likes Christmas and was more accepting of other people. Dickens shows this change through Scrooge’s actions while traveling through time with the spirits. In the beginning of the story, Scrooge was a lonely greedy man. The ghost of Christmas present took Scrooge to a place in London where people who were less fortunate lived At a lighthouse, two men “joined hands over the rough table at which they sat, and they wished each other a Merry Christmas” (Dickens 6.1). Those people had to work on Christmas, but they made the best of it and had their own Christmas. The ghost of Christmas Present also took Scrooge to his nephew’s house. At his nephew’s house, they were playing a game and Scrooge’s nephew was thinking of something while the other had to figure out what it was. He was thinking of “a savage animal, an animal that growled and grunted sometimes, and lived in London.” (Dickens 6.3). After that, someone guessed “It’s your Uncle Scrooge!” (Dickens, 6.3). In the beginning of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, Ebenezer Scrooge’s view on Christmas is negative and he is characterized as being unsympathetic, uncharitable, grouchy. To begin, there are three different spirits who visit Scrooge at various times in the night. The spirits help make Scrooge realize the consequences of his actions and they change Scrooge's view on Christmas. For example, Scrooge is visited by the Spirit of Christmas Past who shows him his childhood and the actions that made him who he is now. As Scrooge observes the past he is filled with regret and wants to re-choose to do things.
PAGE l The Ghost of Christmas Present is the second spirit to visit Scrooge. A majestic giant clad in a green robe. His lifespan is restricted to Christmas Day. He escorts Scrooge on a tour of his contemporaries’ Holiday celebrations. Since the ghost is on a throne of food, the symbolism this has towards the story is where the ghost takes Scrooge, to make a point to his visits.

In the novel A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge is a grump, grouchy, old man who didn’t accept Christmas to be celebrated. According to Scrooge, Christmas was a Humbug. He is visited by three ghosts from his past, present, and Christmas yet to come. They will show Scrooge the things that happened, were happening, and were to come, so maybe he will change his ways. If Scrooge doesn’t hurry and do something now he will be haunted , and eventually turn into one of the ghosts.
The Ghost brings Scrooge to a graveyard, where he appears to see his name on a grave, which is the final scare that Scrooge will endure, but the strongest of them all. “Scrooge crept towards it and it said his own name, EBENEZER SCROOGE.” Thus scared Scrooge so badly but made him realize, that after his whole life of working for money, all of it would be gone when he passed and he would never get to spend it all. Although skeptical in the beginning, Scrooge begins to understand why he must change his ways, and he discovers what he can do to become a better person. Throughout most of the first chapter, Scrooge is very greedy. When two kind men come and ask Scrooge for a small donation to help benefit the poor Scrooge asks if any of the prisons or poorhouses are still in operation, and the men tell him: “Many can’t go there; and many would rather die.” To which Scrooge replies with: “If they rather die, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.” Scrooge was already being greedy by not giving money to the men, but he was also being extremely rude by saying people should hurry up and die.
Scrooge begins to change in stave two. In the begging the ghost of Christmas Past takes Scrooge to his past. He
Stave One, Dickens uses a lot of different quotes and conversations to tell the readers how Scrooge really is, most of these quotes are found in the first few pages and describe how much of a horrible, cold hearted person Scrooge is. Scrooge is described as 'hard and sharp as a flint, ' flint is a type of sedimentary rock with a glossy and waxy appearance and inside it 's usually dark grey. Dickens has used this quote to describe Scrooge as an inanimate object and get the effect what he was like, it also describes the same appearance to scrooge that he was hard on other people and wouldn 't show people his true emotions. Another example of Scrooge being described to an object is 'self-contained, and as solitary as a oyster ' this is a simile which is suggesting that Scrooge was a secretive person, who kept himself to himself and he didn 't like to show others how he felt or what problems he was going through.
