Evaluation of my time spent at a London Students Union
Introduction
This report will the evaluating my experience during my experiential learning practice. Experiential learning practice (EPP) in its simplest form is developing skills through practice, followed by reflection on skills gained and their use. EPP was popularised as an alternative to written and aural taught learning, it offered a different and new way of learning through practical skills (Lewis & Williams, 1994, p. 6). For my EPP I was working within the representation team for a London Students union, A charitable membership organisation that represents and serves the students of a university. Within this evaluation report I will be outlining several Psychological theories.

(Salancik & Pfeffer, 1977) a study found that the use of the “word” goal indicates to an individual that a task is achievable. This study stresses the use of the word “goal” has a positive impact on motivation, a point held by the goal setting theory. This could therefore be applied to my EPP experience with the use of the word goal being used to describe objectives and aspirations of the organisation. However, within my time at the organisation goal setting theory was not always described as goals we needed to achieve, this may have intern limited the possible motivation given to tasks. Some goals set were not being achieved, which counters goal setting theories stance on setting achievable goals. An example of this was getting three school representatives for each course, an unlikely goal to …show more content…
According to this theory the best leaders are those who best adapt themselves to the situation. An adaptive leader might look at cues such as the type of task and who is involved in group, to better their judgement. A study on university employees on situational leadership found results that indicated a situational factor in leadership when solving different job tasks (Fernandez & Vecchio, 1997). This theory has an application for the EPP that I took part in, throughout my experience I was faced with tasks that we as a team had to overcome, it became clear that the role of leader changed dependant on the task. An example would be creating the design and speech for the new PowerPoint presentation for recruitment of student staff. The situational leadership theory would explain why the members of our team more adept in presenting skills took the leadership role, this being in accordance with situational demands and
A goal setting approach will provide effective goals and create attainable goals for employees to reach. An example of a goal oriented theory that can be implemented at Engstrom is the idea of the Path-Goal model. This theory is based on specifying a leader's style or behavior that best fits the employee and work environment to achieve a goal (House, 1974). The entire idea behind a goal based theory is to increase your employees' motivation, and satisfaction so they become productive members of the organization (House, 1974). When organizations can engage their employees to become productive members, it is only then that the employee will change their attitude and have a sense of motivation that will show when the outcome is received.
As the Situational Leadership Model suggests, different leadership strategies are appropriate for different
Experiential learning is learning through action, doing, experiences, discovery and exploration, which is used by educators to teach students in order to increase knowledge, develop skills, and clarify values (Gentry, 1990). For experiential learning to take place, there are eight principles that has to be present: direct and purposeful experiences, appropriately challenging the clients, natural consequences, client-based changes, present and future relevance, synthesis and reflection, personal responsibility and clients become actively engaged (Priest & Gass, 2005). These eight principles will be discussed and implemented on an outdoor adventure program designed for children between the ages of nine and twelve. They will be divided into two
This study utilizes the Kolb’s Experiential Theory. According to Kolb and Kolb (2013) the Experiential Learning Theory (ELT) is a dynamic view of learning based on a learning cycle driven by the resolution of the dual dialectics of action/reflection and experience/abstraction. This theory draws on the work of prominent 20th century scholars who gave experience a central role in their theories of human learning and development—notably John Dewey, Kurt Lewin, Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky, William James, Carl Jung, Paulo Freire, Carl Rogers and Mary Parker Follett—to develop a holistic model of the experiential learning process and a multi-dimensional model of adult development (Kolb and Kolb, 2013). Kolb and Kolb (2013) stated that ELT is built
Leadership is a process of interactions between leader and other staff, where a leader is as a guidance that inspires other staff with vision (Marquis & Houston, 2012). A well known type of leadership theory are transformational leadership which were said has a positive
Developing goals, in my opinion, is one of the most critical things to do in order to achieve success. What are goals you ask? Goals are stepping stones. They are the steps that you achieve and the end result is your ultimate destination. In this paper you will see which goals I have on both a personal and professional level.
It concentrates in the connections between leaders and followers and deals with motivation and inspiration of the team. SKILLS BASED THEORY OF LEADERSHIP Skill Areas Robert Katz developed one of the major theories of skills-based leadership, which recommends that good leaders have a set of skills that they have developed over time. He identified technical skills related to the field, human skills related to communicating with people and conceptual skills related to setting vision as the major areas that leaders need to develop. He highlighted that Higher-level leaders however, need to be stronger on their conceptual skills, whereas more pro-active leaders need to have stronger technical skills.
LEARNING - Learning is the demonstration of gaining new, or altering and strengthening, existing information, practices, aptitudes, qualities, or inclination and may include blending distinctive sorts of data. The capability to learn is controlled by people, creatures and a few machines. Advance about whether has a tendency to take after learning bends. Learning is not obligatory; it is relevant. It doesn 't happen at the same time, yet expands upon and is molded by what we know.
INTRODUCTION The general concept of learning through experience was discovered in around 320 B.C. Aristotle wrote in NICHOMACHAEN ETHICS “for the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them. But as an articulated approach experiential learning is of much more recent period. David A. Kolb helped to develop the modern theory of experiential learning, drawing heavily on the work of John Dewey, Kurt Lewin and Jean Piaget. In 1987 Kolb published a book entitled Experiential Learning.
Specific mention may be made of three such theories; Fielder’s contingency theory, situational leadership and Path- Goal theory. The Fielder contingency theory suggests that there must be a strong leader- member relationship. A leader
Reflective study of leadership Leadership can be defined as the ability and understanding of an individual to motivate, influence and enable others to contribute toward the effectiveness and success of an organization or group of which they are members. It involves the creation of balance between management, coordination and supervision, even taking people’s responsibility on your shoulder is also recommended sometimes. It also involves directing, organizing and motivating them. Many speculations and theories have been given about leadership by many scholars. But in real world understanding and usage of the same is different in different pretexts.
The goal theory The goal theory of motivation developed by Edwin A. Locke suggests that individuals are motivated when they are specific GOALS. The goal theory therefore primarily concerned with employee motivation. Participation in goal setting is essential, as is feedback on performance. Locke proposes that difficult but based on agreement.
Understanding the learning styles and study techniques I used for the last term through David Kolb's theory on experiential learning Model (ELM), which is typically represented by a four stage learning cycle, as; According to Kolb, Effective learning is seen when a person progresses through a cycle of four stages, however, he explains that different people naturally prefer a certain single different style (actually a product of two pairs of variables as presented above.) Furthermore, below is a brief and concise comparative description of each style: ACCOMODATING DIVERGING CONVERGING ASSIMILATING - "hands-on" and concrete -able to look at things from different perspective - can solve problems and will use their learning to find solutions
This paper will examine the three leadership theories, identify how they apply to my practice, and explore how these theories interact with each other. The Trait Leadership Theory is based on the belief that a person is born with special traits contributing to natural leadership abilities. Studies of famous historical leaders have been used to identify various traits for this theory. Although the list of traits differs from study to study, there are five major traits that are consistent throughout most studies.
This paper is going to encompass different leadership theories and their relevance to my own personal personality and method of leadership. There will be information on the advantages and disadvantages of the leadership theories and information on each including examples. The purpose of this paper is to view various kinds of leadership theories and apply them to a real-life scenario. Leadership Theories There are quite a few different leadership theories available for people to take information from and use in business settings and even personal settings.
