I found that like many colleges, Georgia Tech seems to value cultural diversity, the plethora of student diversity programs proves this. Due to my family 's involvement in the military, I have been exposed to a vast multitude of cultures and ideologies. Although the constant moving and adapting to new surroundings may be arduous, I found the teachings instilled by foreign communities invaluable. Such cultivated reapings include a honed sense adaptability, understandability, and respect. With a Japanese mother and German father, I seem to fit into the common depiction of the United States as a “Melting pot of cultures”. Through multiple visual tours and hours of research, I deduced that Georgia Tech possess a certain uniqueness that other technological institutes lack, that being a great graduation rate of underrepresented minorities and research leadership. In terms of cultural diversity, I truly believe that I may add to the cultural diversity ingrained in Georgia Tech by joining the 4% multiracial students, and sharing the same positive ideologies that I am fortunate enough to retain. During my sophomore year of high school, I began to engage myself in the community. My local mission sparked my interest in the locale. The mission asked for volunteers to sort the warehouse and give food to those in need. …show more content…
During my time with the club I often met with Kiwanis (A organization of volunteers), soon I learned that Kiwanis created The Key club to give high school students an opportunity to serve their community. I also uncovered that The Georgia Institute of Technology also enjoys a Kiwanis club. In terms of service I believe that through community service, I may make a positive contribution to Georgia Tech upon arrival. I am very excited to join Kiwanis in college. I have always served locally, but I am exuberant to assist broader
In the article “The Case for Historically Black Colleges and Universities: Understanding Race Relation in the United States Through its HBCUs” written by Priscelle Biehlmann, she uses data to argue that there are more advantages for both black and non-black students when attending a HBCU rather than a Predominately White Institution (PWI). First she discusses the how HBCUs emerged during the Reconstruction Period. Then she highlights the how court cases such as the 1898 Plessy v. Ferguson and 1954 Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court had an effect on HBCUs. She then transitions by providing distinct advantages Black and non-Black students undergo when attending a HBCU. Biehlmann starts the article discussing the emergence of HBCUs.
One of the greatest public servants known to mankind is Myrlie Evers-Williams. Mrs. Evers-Williams embodies what it means to be a woman of conviction and virtue. Her tireless effort to correct injustices and empower others is something I aspire to do. When examining today’s society, you find that young people are faced with a multitude of challenges, particularly young people of color. Our education system is failing, our children are falling behind, our men are being profiled, our families are broken, and our communities are suffering.
As a junior in high school, I was inducted into the National Honor Society for doing exceptionally well in my academic endeavors and actively participating in volunteer events. My contributions through this organization have made a significant impact on both my personal development and my community’s support services. The numerous volunteer projects in which I have participated have prepared me to continue helping others in the future. Through projects such as building houses from the ground-up with Habitat for Humanity, I have developed teamwork skills, discovered my management potential, and increased my social network, all while working to provide services for less fortunate individuals in my community. College: An Unsuccessful Diversification Project In her article, “Why America is Self-Segregating,” Danah Boyd emphasizes the importance of diversity in our social connections and explains, as members of a nation, we are segregating ourselves. Through culture, ethnicity, religion, and socioeconomic background, fragmentation is occurring daily. Boyd realizes that diversity is hard, but believes it is a crucial part of a successful democracy. Boyd explains that while the original goal of social media may have been to connect people from different cultures and nations, its effects have been working in the opposite direction.
I would like to become an active member of Carrboro High School’s National Honor Society in order to benefit my community through service. I am immensely committed to serving and improving my community, as I have made distinctly clear with my 143 service hours. Through these service hours, I have focused on the improvement of the future community by helping disenfranchised refugee children coming from horrible living conditions in Western Africa, by teaching children about biology, chemistry, and scientific history, by preparing freshmen for their high school careers, by raising money to protect and aid voiceless animals hurt in car crashes and other human infringements, and by creating rain gardens, planting food crops, and decreasing Carrboro High School’s environmental

Georgia Tech is filled with opportunities for students to flourish; but the students are some of the many who contribute to the community to make it enriching for many others around them. Not only do I want to benefit from this diverse community, but also support this tight-knit group through spreading cultural awareness, doing community service, and working on research projects that can bring about changes in the society. I have been training in Bharatanatyam, a form of classical Indian dance, since I was in kindergarten. Over the past thirteen years, it has been a great experience performing at various locations and learning new styles of dance. When I entered high school, I joined South Asian American Student Association and choreographed many Bollywood,
The Delta program is designed to help engage participants in teaching as research to produce future faculty in STEM who are committed to effective teaching practices to a diverse group of students. My first class “Effective Teaching in an Internationally Diverse College Classroom” focuses on ways to utilize students’ diverse backgrounds as an asset in the classroom. Taking this course in conjunction with teaching has promoted constant thought of how to put teaching concepts into practice. How are the Socio-Cultural Issues of Social Disadvantage and Cultural Diversity Understood and Represented in the Australian Education System? Issues of social disadvantage, particularly those associated with socio-economic and cultural diversity, are still not adequately understood or represented in the Australian education system. A short investigation into this issue indicates that not only are students from lower socio-economic backgrounds and certain cultural backgrounds experiencing education inequity and struggling to achieve success, but that in addition the current education system may even be perpetuating this situation, and contributing to the alienation of these students (Ewing, 2013. p.73).
