As a concerned citizen and college student, I recommend several policies to create a safer environment at school campuses. As there has been an increase in school shootings within the last ten years, the safety of students on campus has become a major concern. The problem of the increase in the number of school shootings has resulted in an unsafe environment for students affecting overall development. I am writing to seek your assistance on the issue of schools not having proper safety measures to prevent and respond to mass shootings, this issue must come to an end by finding an appropriate resolution. Gun control is a controversial topic that has been placed on the agenda for several years. The pattern of gun control is a chain reaction. …show more content…
Such as counselors, therapist, and training for teachers to identify psychological problems in the classroom. The ability for students to utilize these services is a crucial element to respond to a school shooting emergency and prevention. • Provide funding for advanced security technology such as metal detectors at all entrances of school, security cameras placed inside and outside of school grounds. Also, requires a school resource officer on all campuses. • Congress and school officials should work together, creating policies requiring individual school and building safety plans, as well as district-wide safety plans that will serve as a guide to address the various safety needs in the school. For instance: lockdown procedures, evacuations, drills and safety protocols, and personnel assignments. This includes monthly drills that allow for practice and preparedness if an event …show more content…
Students school environment should be overall safe and supportive. When a parent sends their child to school for eight hours they should feel confident that their child will return safely, and students should feel comfortable to learn and grow. No parent wants a broken heart from a phone call saying their child has been shot. I recommend that enhancing the existing federal policy that gives local school districts the flexibility to use resources to fund student services personnel (including counselors, psychologists, and therapists) as well as appropriate training for teachers to identify mental health problems. In the Parkland, Florida school shooting, the gunman was a student, who had demonstrated serious mental illness and that he had planned out the school shooting as he posted on his YouTube channel. This could have possibly been prevented if teachers were aware of the warning signs of mental instability. If schools had the proper resources for their students, this may lessen the number of school shootings as they can give help to those in
A simple way to stop school shootings in our district would be by eliminating all the factors that form a school shooter. Most school shooter suffered from bullying or had some sort of mental illness. In order to minimize the chance of a kid becoming a school shooter, we need to increase awareness.
There have been more school shootings in the past 8 years than theres has been in the past fifty years. School shootings have gotten out of control. Kids are scared to go to school because they don’t think they are safe. Most schools do intruder drills, but schools could be doing more. One possibility is arming teachers which would provide a good deterrent to school shootings.
Students today live their day-to-day lives in constant fear of what seems inevitable. The United States has one of the highests rates of school shootings in the world. Society has become so desensitized to these shootings that they are no longer shocked to hear about another school falling victim to it. Even when students take a stand against gun violence, the only solution offered to them is a proposition to arm teachers. However, bringing more guns into a school will only further deteriorate the situation.
Concealed carry is a very arguable topic, some people do not like the fact that an eighteen to twenty two year old college student is walking around campus with a loaded handgun. However, some people feel safer when they are carrying their handgun. In the world today, it is hard to know when someone is going to enter a classroom or a campus with a gun. One of the main reasons some laws prohibit the carry of firearms on campus is the thought that students may be disrupted by the thought of another student having a handgun next to them. However if the handgun is concealed the other student may never know.
This should not be a worry for the child or parents but it has to be because at this point any school is a threat. So a possible factor in decreasing shootings is arming teachers, by doing this teachers can fight back instead of shielding or running from the shooter. Reason #2 teachers can defend their students by changing this law and using correct training teachers should be able to carry a weapon. By doing this not only insure safety it will give relief for parents all over the country. This tactic will give school staffs a chance to outnumber a possible shooter.
Over the past few weeks, arming teachers has been a controversial topic throughout the country. School shootings have taken the lives of many over the past few years, yet they are becoming more and more frequent. In today’s society children shouldn’t have to go to school worried if they are going to be safe that day. If teachers are armed it will add that extra bit of protection to the children. A big question is if arming teachers is even going to matter if an active shooter happens to be in that school.
School shootings are starting to become a norm in today 's world. This is something we can only take precautions for but, we cannot completely stop school shootings from happening. Banning guns is not the option because the shooters are still going to find a way to get their guns. We should not punish everybody for the stupidity of some people 's actions. "At Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado two teens went on a shooting spree on April 20, 1999, killing 13 people and wounding more than 20 others before turning their guns on themselves and committing suicide" (Columbine Shooting, 2018).
Safety is something we all strive for in our lives and we need it as much as we need air. Sadly, recent events in the world have put this safety at risk, something that must be changed. Being a university student, safety at the campus I commune to daily is of the upmost importance. The violence on school campuses has gotten worse as the time goes on, a total of 19 shootings has happened in 2015 alone. This may not seem like a lot, but the 40 deaths in these shootings respectively say different.
The school system failed the many victims that have been the outcome of these failures. This student was suspended the day before the shooting for a violent act and had multiple reports of violent acts. He was brought back to school, reported to have a gun, no gun was found, and then shortly after shot his teacher in the chest. On this day administrators failed Abby Zwerner putting her and her students in great danger. There were multiple instances before this day where the school board and administration could have provided this student with the help he needed.
So with all these kids dying wouldn't you agree that we need better mental health support, so we can prevent all these shootings? I believe that if we had good and strong mental health support services in the USA then tragic events like Columbine H.S. & Sandy Hook would probably never happen. That is why I am supporting for the USA to talk more about how to create more mental health support programs to help prevent gun violence events. To end the violence, metal detectors should be placed in every public school across America to ensure the safety of the school 's students and staff. Public schools in America have been challenged a lot in the past few years. They have been constantly questioned due to recent school shootings. The most recent tragedy occurred where “seventeen people [were] killed by a gunman [on February 14, 2018] at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida” (Levenson and Sterling).
Resolutions are vehemently being sought to protect schools from possible attacks and to objectively eradicate deadly school shootings altogether. Commonly, security officers are placed in schools in hopes that increased surveillance will inhibit violent outbreaks (Crawford and Burns 2016). Mixed evaluations have been found in association with security officers, while some benefits reportedly transpire, experiences of disparaging consequences remain a regrettable reality as well (Crawford and Burns 2016). Additionally, active shooter drills routinely occur at schools across the nation, however, as Jillian Peterson and James Densley report in their CNN article titled, “The Usual Approach to School Security Isn’t Working,” studies indicate that
In April 1999, a pair of students at Columbine High School in Colorado killed a dozen fellow students and one teacher, as well as themselves. Parents, teachers, and politicians nationwide, understandably terrified in the wake of the massacre, began advocating ever-stricter school security policies to help prevent violent crime.but the crime never stop. I'm am writing about school security because I think that a lot of school don't have many recourse to stop the violence, shooting, bullying, fight ,and others violent act in schools.and they need school security. The violence occurred everything second in american school most of the time in schools.this occurs because the security school.big school had 100,000 students and they need more protection and room.
These terrible people make us all question what can be done to better protect the students and teachers that fill our nation 's schools. We need to make schools safer by, implementing more violence prevention, more school resource officers, and more metal detectors. Often times after a school shooting occurs, it is common to hear about the warnings signs that went unnoticed until after the tragic event had occurred. Since we have missed the signs, time and time again, we need to train one another to be more aware of what is going around us.
School safety is a very controversial topic in the U.S. There are many cases of people questioning the safety of schools. Recent school shootings raised concerns over school safety. While this has received a lot of attention, other things such as drugs, ara problem in schools. Even teachers have spoken out about the lack of safety of their schools.
