Eli Whitney had a huge influence on America. He invented the Cotton Gin and introduced interchangeable parts to people. His inventions greatly spead up the process for many things. He was born in Massachusetts in 1765 and he died in 1825. His dad was a farmer. He would later get married to Henrietta Edwards in 1817, and he would have four children, In 1792, he graduated from Yale College and had considered become a lawyer. He headed to the South and intended to become a private tutor, but when he was invited to stay with widow Catherine Green on her plantation, he accepted. While Whitney was on the plantation, he learned about the difficulties that the slaves and farmers faced with cotton. Although cotton was easy to grow and it could be stored for a long time, but separating the cotton seeds from the cotton fibers was very difficult and time consuming. A worker could pick out the seeds from only about one pound of cotton a day. Whitney was told of the struggle and he set out to create a machine to speed up the process. While he made the machine, it is thought that Catherine Green …show more content…
In the South, the gin made it so cotton fibers could be separated from cotton seeds much faster. In the North, they always had enough cotton for their textile factories. With more cotton and more textiles, the United States prospered. Another effect the cotton gin had was the growth of slaves on plantations. With the cotton gin, the farmers could separate cotton faster, so they could grow more cotton. To grow more cotton, more slaves would be need to plant and harvest it. Also, the plantation owners could afford more slaves because their was more cotton that brought it more money. The plantation owners would repeat this cycle as they got more money. They could also borrow money from the banks to buy more land, or slaves. Another idea and invention that Whitney proved was helpful was the use of interchangeable
Besides, cotton gins made the South too independent. The Southerners had the priority over people from other regions due to they were the best cotton providers at that time, and everything about cotton was depending on them. They were also able to gain the support from Britain because the need of cotton from Britain. The balance abilities and authorities were the key elements that will make a country unite and success, and nobody wants to see any of the region in the United States has the privilege over others. Cotton gin was invented to be helpful, but it turned to become a machine for the southerners to benefit
The Cotton Gin, never was there an artifact that brought so much prosperity as well as hardship in equal measure. Eli Whitney’s invention which was created in 1793 is often cited by historians as an indirect cause of the American Civil War. The genius of the cotton gin was that it could separate the seed from the cotton, so rather than having armies of slaves picking cotton from sun up to sun down this machine could do the job in half the time. Consider this, now even a small plantation operation could quadruple its bottom line, this caused an even greater boom in the acquisition of slaves. Francis Ellen Watkins stated, “A hundred thousand new-born babes are annually added to the victims of slavery; twenty thousand lives are annually sacrificed
Eli Whitney and Cyrus McCormick are two of the most impressive early inventors in United States history. Both inventors had huge impacts on the agricultural field with their respective inventions. Whitney’s cotton gin, which was created in 1793, revolutionized the plantation of the South. Similarly, McCormick’s reaper had the same effect on the North. The reaper had much of the same effect on wheat that the gin had on cotton, allowing wheat field to be picked in a fraction of the time after its use became widespread years after its creation for a neighboring farm in 1831.
Whitney and his partner, Miller, did not intend to sell the gins. Rather, like the proprietors of grist and sawmills, they expected to charge farmers for cleaning their cotton – two-fifths of the value, paid in cotton. Resentment at this scheme, the mechanical simplicity of the device and the primitive state of patent law, made infringement inevitable. Whitney and Miller could not build enough gins to meet demand, so gins from other makers found ready sale. Ultimately, patent infringement lawsuits consumed the profits and their cotton gin company went out of business in

Sectionalism Before the 19th century, Americans stuck to their traditional roots and felt no need to try new things or implement new technologies, but that soon changed. In the South, the demand for cotton was at an all time high, but it was a long and difficult process as slaves had to separate the seed and cotton by hand. A man named Eli Whitney saw an opportunity to fix this issue and created the infamous Cotton Gin. The machine worked by inputting the cotton on one side and cranking it as it separates the seeds and cotton with the hassle as the output results in cotton.

With Ely Whitney's invention of the cotton gin, cotton farming drove several changes. Cotton farmers could grow more cotton, considering processing cotton became more efficient with the cotton gin (Schultz, 2013). This change drove increases in land use, the establishment of additional farms, and a sharp increase in the use of enslaved people. These additional farms increased the wealth of southern farmers but caused several environmental problems considering the additional land clearing required to open fields and the soil damage caused by overuse. Social life for enslaved people dropped to inhumane levels, given that enslavers believed social interaction among enslaved people could lead to rebellion and insurrection due to several slave

Whitney was also introduced the manufacture of firearms using a system of interchangeable parts, greatly decreasing the time it took to produce and repair many types of guns, including muskets and rifles. This system of interchangeable parts was adapted to drastically increase the number of products in the

So, here came a young man that had just graduated college and devised a machine to take the seeds out of the cotton fibers; the machine was called the “cotton gin.” His machine could help a farmer produce up to fifty pounds a day versus only one pound a day.
