In Act I, Scene ii, Cassius primarily employs ethos to gain Brutus's attention, logos to contest Caesar's power, and pathos to arouse Brutus’s passion. This shows that wiser people before them said that Brutus was strong and therefore, lends a hand towards Cassius’s argument that he should take action. Also by stating “I, as Aeneas, our great ancestor Did from the flames of troy upon his shoulder… Did I the tired Caesar” (Shakespeare 20-21).

Antony says, “look in this place ran Cassius’ dagger through… See what a rent the envious Casca made… Through this the well-beloved Brutus stabbed.” These images stir up emotion, Antony wants the people of Rome to be infuriated with Brutus and mentally paint a picture of what they did. Brutus takes a different approach and for a testimonial, “any dear friend Caesar’s, to him I say, that Brutus’ love Caesar was no less than his.” The similarity between the two speeches shows a goal both men wanted to achieve, which is to appeal to the heart and emotion.

Antony’s speech is bursting with many rhetorical devices to persuade the plebeians that demonstrates his orator skills of using ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos is prevalent within Antony’s speech when he addresses the credibility of Brutus by saying Brutus is an honorable man. For instance, Antony uses repetition of saying that Brutus is an honorable man that altogether questions his credibility in the following lines: “Yet Brutus says he was ambitious / And Brutus is an honorable man (103-104). By using this clever phase with a tone of sarcasm it degrades Brutus’s orator skills and as a person.
In this soliloquy Cassius is speaking to Brutus. He starts by expressing his frustration with how the roman people view Ceaser as a giant. He refers to him as a Colossus, meaning giant, he is specifically referring to Colossus of Rhodes, a giant bronze statue of the god Helios. Cassius likens the statue to Ceaser, saying that he is viewed as a god, someone who is idealised as a perfect human. Cassius then says one the most famous lines from the play.
“Brutus and Caesar: What should be in that ‘Caesar’?/ Why should that name be sounded more than yours?/ Write them together, yours is as fair a name;” (I.ii.235-237) Cassius’ says because he wants to get Brutus to question why Caesar has become so popular and powerful, and why he deserves it more than anyone else. He wishes to build Brutus up, convincing Brutus that he is just as beloved and trusted by the people, and has the same influence Caesar does. Ultimately, he wants to persuade Brutus that he deserves as much power as Caesar has. Cassius uses another metaphor while speculating about how Caesar gained so much power and influence, just after he has finished talking about Brutus’ equality to Caesar. “Upon what meat doth this our Caesar feed,/ That he is grown so great?”
Brutus finds Cassius speech to be convincing with pathos, allusion, and irony. Cassius is trying to convince Brutus that Caesar is not fit to rule Rome as a king. Cassius specifies that their fathers would say, "There was a Brutus once that would have brook'd Th' eternal devil to keep his state in Rome As easily as a king" (Shakespeare). This use of an allusion helps infer to Brutus that his ancestors would have tolerated a devil while they were ruling Rome, before letting a king rule. Cassius use of irony when speaking to Brutus is to convince Brutus that he is saying Caesar should not be king for the right purposes.
