Why does the thought of something that isn’t possible capture the attention of so many? Society today is infatuated with the notion of the element of fantasy. The definition of fantasy itself is imagining things that are impossible or improbable. Having the ability to escape from reality and enter a world where the impossible is real gives society something to look forward to. Fantasy has been around for quite some time and is widely popular today. The BBC TV series Merlin, which first aired in 2008 starring Colin Morgan and Bradley James focuses on Arthurian legend. Colin Morgan stars as the character Merlin, while Bradley James stars as Prince Arthur, who later becomes King. Merlin is a powerful teen-aged wizard who helps Arthur throughout the trials he faces, while trying not to reveal his magic, which during the time was illegal. In the 1963 Disney movie The Sword in the Stone, directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, Merlin, who is portrayed as an old man, helps a young boy called Wart on his journey to become King Arthur.

Imagination is key and allows you to experience something you’ve never seen. The Sword in the Stone helps children explore the unthinkable. Watching the film helps children develop a sense of imagination that they will use for the rest of their lives. Watching fantasy TV shows and/ or films is important especially for children. The stories help them explore a realm of possibilities, where anything they set their mind to can happen. Having a sense of imagination is the foundation for children to learn and grow.
