Although there have been many factors that have contributed to making the United States what it exists as in the modern day, the Monroe Doctrine and Manifest Destiny are two crucial documents and movements that played a role in the development of the United States. During the mid-nineteenth century, the Monroe Doctrine unified the United States, creating an environment of hostility towards other non-Western Hemispheres, specifically European forces. This document asserted the United States power as well as established its control over the Americas and the general Western Hemisphere. The Monroe Doctrine served to provide a legal and social rationalization for the ideology behind Manifest Destiny, ultimately leading to Westward expansion. The …show more content…
The strictness of the United States is exemplified through The American YAWP, which states, “The Monroe Doctrine declared that the United States considered its entire hemisphere, both North and South American, off-limits to new European colonization” (YAWP 193). The United States was sending a strong message, deeming any action even in Latin America would be considered a hostile act against the United States, prompting the United States to take action, which would lead to negative repercussions for the European powers. This Doctrine was issued as a result of growing American concerns about possible increased European powers and prevalence in the Western Hemisphere, specifically the United States (Western United States) through the expansion of their colonies. The
The Monroe Doctrine was an expression of nationalism as it declared the United States’s intention to stay out of European affairs and it forced Europe to not interfere in the Americas. Firstly, the United States declared it would stay out of European affairs, wars, and conflicts, signaling an inward focus. However, the United States also threatened Europe when it declared it would go to war in case any European nation attempted further colonization or interference in the Western hemisphere. Metaphorically speaking, the US built a wall between the Americas and Europe, impeding any military or political interference. Even though the US did not have the power to enforce this at the time, it was carving its path to dominate nations in Latin America
Therefore, after two years of development, President James Monroe gave a speech to Congress in 1823 regarding the idea of establishing a solution to Adams exigence to form a foreign policy by creating the Monroe Doctrine. This policy stressed a noncompliant attitude from America towards European nations to not colonialize in the Western Hemisphere or else face retaliation. The United States declared to Europe and other foreign nations through this doctrine that they “will consider any attempt on their part to extend their system to any portion of this hemisphere as dangerous to our peace and safety" of the United States (Monroe). This doctrine did not affect the already established colonies of European powers that had declared their independence from America. It claimed that the United States would not interfere with European affairs and stay neutral as long as Europe followed the policy of halting western colonization.
The United States promised to stay out of European business and told the Europeans to stay out its as well. European countries that interfere in America taken as acts of aggression. The Monroe Doctrine was propounded by President James Monroe in 1823. Monroe proposed that the US would oppose further colonization of North and South America by European powers but would not interfere in the affairs of existing
The Monroe Doctrine Continuation and Change on the U.S. Foreign Policy After decades of expansion, John Quincy Adams thought the United States should have dominance over the whole western hemisphere. Spain, though, had quite different ideas. They wanted to reestablish control over all their colonies in South America, Mexico, and Texas. Through fear of their colonies revolutionizing, Spain and other European countries created the "Holy Alliance", aimed at preventing revolutions in the name of Christian and monarchist principles. Because Britain's trade with these colonies would greatly suffer due to Spanish restrictions, they refused to join the Holy Alliance.
Manifest Destiny was the belief in the 19th century that the United States was destined to expand westward, from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific coast, in order to spread American values and institutions. This belief was used to justify the forced removal of Native American tribes from their ancestral lands, as well as the annexation of Texas, the Mexican-American War, and the Oregon Treaty. One of the main arguments given by supporters of Manifest Destiny was that it was a God-given mission for the United States to expand westward and bring Christianity and "civilization" to the "savages" who lived in the western territories. Manifest Destiny provided a religious and cultural justification for American expansion across the continental United States, with the belief that the destiny of the United States was to spread democratic institutions "from sea to shining
Sam Foust Professor Grisham HIST 157 1/18/23 Manifest Destiny was a term coined in the mid-19th century to describe the belief that it was the divine right and duty of the United States to expand its territory and spread its principles of freedom, religion, democracy, and opportunity across the entire North American continent. However, manifest destiny had lasting impacts and was not liked by all. This construct that was a huge part of Americas history is a very controversial topic with lasting benefits. There are arguments to be made for both the negative and positive side of Manifest Destiny.
The Role of Manifest Destiny There are many events and roles that were played by different groups of people, that had to do with the tension rising in the slave and non-slave states. Manifest Destiny played a big role because, it started to spread democracy over the World, brought up issues on the topic of Religion, race, patriotism money etc. Which then escalated into bigger problems and eventually caused the Civil War. Nostra heard about the Monroe Doctrine and had some idea to change it up. Ithad no more of it to be used solely for economic dominance and imperialism by the United States, but in conjunction with its twenty neighbors, to defend the collective security of the Western Hemisphere. But changing the Monroe Doctrine only changed some of its power. Still, the Monroe Doctrine could still have advance American economic and political interests in the Western
Manifest destiny was one of the most significant concepts in U.S. history. It was the belief that the U.S.’s national birth was the start of new history and that it was destined by God for everyone to follow American culture and expand their land from “Sea to shining sea.” They wanted to carry on this idea into a reality until they grew to their full potential as a nation. They wanted to spread to and gain all the land they possibly could, and take control of everything. Although there were many positives like gaining more land and resources, the negatives outweigh the positives drastically.
Manifest Destiny The concept of Manifest Destiny originated in the United States in the 19th century, when Americans believed that it was their divine mission, their manifest destiny, to expand their territory from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. This belief, which was rooted in notions of American exceptionalism and a sense of cultural and religious superiority, played a significant role in shaping the American policy and the territorial expansion of the US. First of all we need to know what manifest destiny is. In an article written by The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica it says: “Manifest Destiny, in U.S. history is, the supposed inevitability of the continued territorial expansion of the boundaries of the United States westward
The Monroe Doctrine was a speech given in 1823 by James Monroe, the 5th president of the United States, to the U.S. Congress concerning European presence in the Western Hemisphere. Monroe was becoming continuously concerned about European influence in the region. While the primary audience for this message was Congress, the intended audience was all European powers, including Russia, and Latin America. The events in Latin America before and after the Spanish-American War will be used as an example of the imperial reach by the U.S. The United States, ironically, became an imperial power through its mission outlined in the Monroe Doctrine to end European colonialism and imperialism.
“Once we became an independent people it was as much a law of nature that this [control of all of North America] should become our pretension as that the Mississippi should flow to the sea” –John Quincy Adams (Henretta, p. 384). In the 1840s, Americans had a belief that God destined for them to expand their territory all the way westward to the Pacific Ocean. This idea was called Manifest Destiny. In the nineteenth century, Americans were recognized for coming together and building up one another for one cause: westward expansion.
Jake Teran Ms. Bruno U.S 1H 3/26/23 Manifest destiny Manifest destiny is a term used to describe the belief prevalent in the 19th century and the United States that it was the destiny of the nation to expand its territorial boundaries and influence from coast to coast. The idea of manifest destiny was popularized during the 1840s, and it played a significant role in shaping US foreign and domestic policies during that time. However, the view of manifest destiny was not uniform, some supported it, and those opposed it. In this essay, I will compare and contrast the different views of manifest destiny.
Manifest Destiny, a phrase coined in 1845, expressed the philosophy that drove 19 th -century US territorial expansion. Manifest Destiny held that the United States was destined – by God, its advocates believed – to expand its dominion and spread democracy and capitalism across the entire North American continent. The Manifest Destiny was known as the “sea to shining sea.” It was a belief that the US should own all territory between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The westward expansion of the United States during the 19 th -century was not limited to North America, but rather included an ongoing push to establish a stronger US presence in and across the Pacific Ocean.
