It is a great honor for me to be nominated to become a part of the National Honor Society at Bishop Brady High School. I would be elated to join a Society such as this because of the opportunities it would provide me as both a student and a person. Becoming part of the National Honor Society would further me to push myself academically. It would also give me added opportunities to serve my community and school. As a student, I strive for excellence. In middle school, I was a member of the National Junior Honor Society at Strong Foundations Charter School. As a sophomore, I have taken two math classes and gone without a study hall to be able to fulfill my academic desires. I have also taken Honors level classes since my first semester of high school and continuously make the honor roll. I aim to continue to take honors and AP classes to be able to reach my full potential as a student. I am also seen as a strong, dedicated leader. I have been in Girl Scouts for ten years, often helping with younger girls. I …show more content…
During school vacations, I assist the barn manager with the care of nearly 20 horses. I frequently will arrive at 7:30 in the morning to begin morning chores. After preparing grain bowls for the horses, I clean manure and debris from their paddocks. Once chores are completed during the summer, we prepare for our summer camps that begin at 9. Before the children arrive we set our saddles, bridles, brushes, other equipment for the horses, and create schedules with the day’s activities. When all the children have arrived, I assist with bringing horses to the riding area. I then help brush and tack up all the horses and show the campers the basics of proper horse care and riding. This often included me dealing with tense situations in a calm manner. Most days I would feed horses during our lunch while other camp staff supervised the
We started going out to my grandparents’ house everyday to learn how to show and take care of the cattle. It was a very fun experience and I had learned so much about cattle. The fair was about to begin in a few days so we had to take the cattle in early before the fair actually started. The cattle were loaded up with all of the supplies and we were ready to go to the fairgrounds.
I am incharge of all maintenance on the equipment, I do it from start to finish. I irrigate, hay, maintain equipment, sell hay all on my own. Over this summer I also worked on a buffalo ranch where I was in charge of help harvesting hay, maintenance, irrigating, and working buffalo. When working at the ranch I would work at least 6 days a week at least 12 hours a day. While working up at the ranch I would also work on my field before and after work.
Lunch was over and it was time to start traveling again. All of us got back on our horses and continued our journey. Five hours passed and the sky was pitch black. "Time to hit the hay", the trail boss said. As the other cowhands winded down, I rounded up the last few cows.
Today I am deeply humbled to be recognized as a potential member of the National Honor Society. To me this means I have exemplified everything you look for in a student who goes above and beyond, not just in academics but in athletics, the community and at home as well. I have not taken this selection for granted, as I believe would be a great asset to the National Honor Society. I am hardworking, honest, reliable and quite charismatic too. I hold all the qualities required by the distinguished NHS like leadership, service, character and scholarship.
At 8 A.M we wake up and eat breakfast, then at 9:30 we start working. After a couple of hours of working, we would take a break for lunch and relax for a bit. Then after lunch, we head back to work until 5 and end the day there. During this, 1 person will take care of the cows and maintain the barn. They would have to milk the cows, and make sure that the cows are in a stable area.
Eventually, you will find the right set and be ready to start managing cattle. Time and caring are some examples of the hardest work you will do. Once you bring the cattle home and turn them out in the pasture, it is now time to let them explore. For the first
And usually they can. We get all the kids on horseback and they are all ready to go so I go get my horse and we are on our way. I give them the rundown on how to stay back behind me when we ride.
and I started to groom Matt, the show horse I was riding at the time, and fed him. Around eight fifteen we walked around the horse show grounds to find some unique additions to my outfit for the show, like matching ribbon for Matt and for my hair. Once it got closer to show time, around eight thirty that morning, I started to tack up Matt, first by tying him up to his stall. Then, I put the saddle pad on Matt for cushioning,
I also am a part in My Sisters Keeper which is a club for minority girls, with a focus on promoting academic excellence, community
I have been able to maintain a high GPA in college and high school despite challenging teachers I’ve learned from. I have a solid work ethic and strive to achieve success within anything I am involved. In high school I ran varsity track and played soccer. Here at BYU-H, I am the captain of my intramural soccer team. I love becoming friends
I love warming up a bottle of milk for the new calf and holding the bottle up and trying to get the calf to drink the milk, as the milk is squirting out their nose because they drank too fast. When I’d have to cow have a calf in the winter I’d have to help it get the colostrum it needed from its mothers’ teats to be able to survive. Since I have blonde hair the horses always think its hay and try to eat it. I first learned how to tack up a horse before I was allowed to ride one. I was told if I don’t know how to tack up a horse then I shouldn’t be riding so I was taught how to tack a horse.
¨Oh no, here he comes(6). I watched as my owner approached me with a halter, he put it around my head and tied the knot, and then led me out of my precious beloved stall into the dark and gloomy tack room(7).(where horses go to get saddled and begin their day of hard work). He proceeded brushing me off, which is the only thing I enjoy about the tack room(8). The nice smooth bristles gently gracing your back(9). Man If I didn 't get that treatment for free, I would pay cold hard cash for the experience of the sensation(10).
I was a member of Boy Scouts of America for five years, and in that time I rose to the rank of senior patrol leader, the highest boy-held position, was elected into scouting’s national honor society, Order of the Arrow, and was the first in my troop’s history to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. The most life changing experience from my time in scouts was counseling, leading and teaching the few scouts in our troop who had major mental and behavioral impediments, while also helping less mature scouts learn to how to be accepting. One of the most exciting aspects of scouting was the yearly week long summer camp. On this summer camp, the boy leadership is responsible of every aspect of the day, from reveille to cooking meals to making sure everyone
For the past eleven years, I had participated in a week long Girl Scout summer camp. I had been a camper for seven years, a program aide in training for one year, and an advanced program aide leader (APL) for three years. Having experienced the joys of summer camp, I knew that I had to volunteer so I could give back to the program that was the highlight of my summer for so many years. I wanted to help other young Girl Scouts have the time of their lives at summer camp just as I had. During camp, we were always busy creeking, building fires to cook our meals, singing, making crafts, hiking, and having fun.
I position the barrow in front of the stall door so I can clean the stalls so I can easily throw the soiled shavings into it standing in the middle of each stall. The barn is quiet again and the repetition of motion to clean stalls is relaxing, it’s calming. I move onto emptying the water left over from the night before so I can refill each bucket with clean water, I then sweep the aisle to clear the fallen hay and muck that missed the barrow. After finishing inside the barn I walk into the field where my own horse is lazily grazing to bring him in so I can enjoy a warm afternoon ride.
