1. Why did you choose this specialty/profession?
Since I was younger, I was exposed to the hospital environment as my grandpa would frequently travel in and out due to his health problems. Through those visits, I recognized the impact that the nurses made on my grandpa, as well as my family. Being so willing to help and creating such a warm presence in the hospital, the nurses demonstrated the specific empathy and technical skills the profession called for. From seeing the impact of nurses firsthand, I knew that this profession was ideal for me to put my interpersonal and knowledge-based skills to use. Nursing is a profession where I know I can show up as a human and think of holistic ways to support individuals’ well-being. I love the fact

My parents did not go away to college, so the application processes and financial aspects were foreign to them. Being that this was the case, I navigated the college process independently and decided that greater growth was possible if I flew to the mainland for school. As I got more settled, I began to take on more responsibilities to contribute to my independence as a college student, such as part-time jobs and scholarships, while maintaining my …show more content…
My work ethic and desire to always challenge myself with new opportunities are qualities that will push me to be a better nurse and leader, ultimately, to better serve my patients. I am eager to see how my foundational skills will support my continual growth in the field of nursing, especially in the care of Air Force members. I believe that my desire for growth will continue to push me to be a great team member and leader. As a novice nurse, I have the knowledge of foundation skills; however, through my involvement and experiences, I believe my soft skills will support my success in this program. My ability to communicate, work on a team, time manage, make decisions, and remain adaptable through hectic times, will allow me to complete my job efficiently while also being a valuable member of my team. In addition, I take pride in my approachability and flexible personality. I feel it is important to remain open and supportive to my peers, especially in a field like nursing where the best care is only done by a team. When I say flexible, I am aware that individuals have different types of personalities, so I pride myself on my ability to recognize these differences and meet my peers and patients where they are in order to best work with
My future career must focus on being there for those who cannot always be there for themselves. Working as a nursing assistant in a nursing home and on a rehabilitation floor in a hospital, I dedicated myself to assisting residents, ensuring they had everything they needed. Many residents in the nursing home lacked family support, so I became their ally and friend. The residents' faces would light up as they shared their small steps toward their physical therapy goals. For new residents feeling anxious about transitioning to a new place, I offered reassurance and showcased the facility's best aspects, creating a sense of home.
I got to see several ways that nurses provide care for their patients. I observed ICU nurses care for their ill, elderly patients. I witnessed physical therapy nurses assist their patients to ambulate immediately post-surgery. I noticed how fast ER nurses work to triage their patients. I learned a lot from those nurses but could not decide which unit was meant for me.
Certified nursing assistants are in charge of a myriad of tasks related to patient care, saving, and bettering the lives of others. However, the conditions and demands of this job raise questions such as, what are the challenges of being a CNA? What are the various difficulties faced by CNAs, and what’s the most challenging part of being a CNA? The average CNA salary in the United States is around $30,000 per year. While it may seem like quite a lot to some, it’s important to take into account just how much certified nursing assistants face and sacrifice just for the care of others.
My childhood initiated a desire to help prevent and mitigate injury or illness; this soon flourished into an interest in the health care field. To help narrow my choices I explored as many science courses as I could. Talking with health care professionals and reading nursing textbooks I found in my aunt’s house piqued my interest in the nursing field and patient care. From there, I completed a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course which further solidified my decision. Now, I am fully invested in becoming a nurse.
These strengths include strong communication and interpersonal skills, critical thinking abilities, and a genuine passion for patient-centered care. By leveraging these strengths, I can contribute to positive patient outcomes and make a meaningful impact in the lives of those under my care. As I evolve in my nursing career, I see myself transitioning into a clinical setting that aligns with my interests and areas of expertise. While I am open to exploring various clinical specialties, I am particularly drawn to the field of critical care or labor and delivery.
As a nurse, my journey in the field of healthcare has been marked by a fascination and interest in the mental health aspect. The seed of this dream was planted early on in my nursing career, where I witnessed the profound impact that Nurse Practitioners have on patient care outcomes. Their ability to provide holistic, patient-centered care while serving as advocates and educators resonated deeply within me. I was captivated by their comprehensive knowledge, advanced clinical skills, and their ability to make a significant difference in the lives of individuals and communities. I am thrilled to seize this opportunity to return to school and pursue a dream of mine to become a Nurse Practitioner.
As a child growing up, there are many things that one usually aspires to be. However, many factors influence one’s choices. The most influential factor that led me to pursue a career in nursing was the time I spent caring for my grandmother, who was diagnosed with cancer. As I contemplated what to write, emotions ran high as I reflected on my past and recalled seeing my grandmother struggle during her illness. The pain and suffering she endured drove me to enter the healthcare field.
The first day I stepped onto the floor, I felt overwhelmed and I questioned myself if I was meant for this line of work. I was assigned 14 patients. Soon after interacting with all my patients, my perspective and doubts changed. After leaving for college; I started my college days as a full time pre-nursing student. I continued to work as a CNA and
Strengths Finder Introduction Understanding one’s own strengths can be challenging but useful. Being self-aware can be especially beneficial in certain careers such as nursing. Being self-aware of one’s own strengths in the nursing field is extremely important for the nurse, their patient, and their peers. Some people may even suggest that understanding one’s own strengths is necessary to develop a meaningful nurse-patient relationship (Rasheed et al., 2018).
Understanding my own strengths and how they can impact my nursing career can help me to communicate more confidently, initiate conversations with patients and families, and help others stay positive in difficult
During this time, I noticed the difference in care provided between the doctor and the nurse. The nurse offered a more trusting relationship, emphasized the use of holistic care, and provided empathy, which was much appreciated. Thereafter, I began volunteering at Lowell General Hospital and experienced my own interpersonal relationships with the outpatients. I felt truly satisfied during my time there, as I was able to apply my values and experience the gratitude and warmth that radiated from each patient that I helped. Therefore, I chose to pursue a career in nursing, as it is similarly based on my own beliefs and makes me feel like I make a difference in the lives of every person that
After the sudden loss of my oldest brother in 2011, my life changed in the blink of an eye. While trying to overcome this heartbreaking experience was one of the most challenging things ever faced with, his death soon turned into a true inspiration to me. Not only do I cherish all the memories I was able to share with him over the years, I soon came to realization that tomorrow is not a promise to anyone and to live life to the fullest. With this being said, having the opportunity to have an impact on someone everyday whether through communication, actions and/or attitude to help heal is something very powerful to me. Nursing is a profession that allows individuals to open new doors to learn something new and making the best of everyday for each
As a first generation student to attend college from a family of seven, the journey to a higher education has been arduous and overwhelming. My family gives me all the encouragement I need and are very optimistic about pursuing a higher degree. Unlike myself, my parents did not have the opportunity to attend college. My parents were born and raised in a small town in Mexico where the highest level of education they received was fifth grade. I have worked since I was 14 years old to support my parents with bills, and also saving for college and my own vehicle.
According to my preceptor last semester I demonstrates a sound understanding of self-care, self-reflection and work life balance. I also have an “understanding of the components of the nurse patient relationship, by maintaining an open and professional relationship with the patients.” I am also “demonstrated self-direction and initiative” (B. Mahy, personal communication, DATE). Rena Hania, my current preceptor indicates that my strengths include “Maturity, professionalism and desire for autonomy.
