NURSES STAFFING AND QUALITY CARE IN NURSING PRACTICE: Staffing is employing adequate and qualified personnel in appropriate position to produce a reasonable outcome. Having enough nurses to properly manage patient flow affects hospital turn rate, patient satisfaction and quality outcome because nurses helps to get patients admitted, transfer them to other wards or department and also discharge them at the right time. Mcfarland defined staffing as the function by which manager build an organization through the recruitment, selection and development of individuals as capable employees. Nurse staffing has to do with recruiting or employing a certified nurses and placing them at the right position and specialties in a health care facility. Nurses have an integral role in the health care system that is why adequate nurse staffing is the key to patient care and nurse job satisfaction or retention. PERSONAL …show more content…
Researchers have spent decades trying to determine if having more nurse staff lead to better quality of nursing home care. Although the answer may seem to be obviously “yes “the literature feels to give us a clear answer . Bostick and colleagues reached a positive conclusion about the nursing staffing and quality relationship from their review of 87 articles. {Arling G.and Mueller C., 2014}. Registered nurses have long acknowledged and continue to emphasize that staffing issues is an ongoing concern, one that influences the safety of both the patient and nurse. There is a strong relationship between adequate nurse to patient ratios and safe patient outcomes. Rising patient acuity and shortened hospital stay has contributed to challenges. Finding an optimal nurse-to-patient ratio has been a national challenge. However, rising patient acuity and shortened hospital stay have contributed to recent challenges .Ensuring adequate staffing levels have been shown to reduce medical and medication errors, decrease complication among patients, decrease mortality, improve patient satisfaction, reduce nurse fatigue, decrease nurse burnout and improve nurse job satisfaction.{ANA

State-mandated nurse-to-patient ratios remains a controversial topic in healthcare. Sufficient nurse staffing is key to ensure adequate patient care, while scarce staffing effects patients’ safety and puts nurses at risk for burnout. Determining nurse-to-patient ratios in nursing facilities remains a challenge for the nursing profession. There are many factors to consider when determining staffing methods, such as cost, nurses’ satisfaction, patient outcomes and safety. Mandating ratios is one attempt at ensuring nurses’ workloads do not exceed what is needed for adequate patient care and safety.
The authors Rothberg et al, (2005) performed sensitivity analysis on independent variables like hourly compensation for nurses, relative risk of mortality, nurse dissatisfaction and decrease length of stay per
Due to hospital care reaching an all-time high in America, we need nurses now more than ever before. Currently in America, we have an issue with nurses having too many paperwork to fill out. In the article “We Need More Nurses” by Alexandra Robbins argues we need more nurses in the hospital. Nursing shortage has been a common issue throughout the world. Patient-nurse ratios are adequate; therefore, nurse turnover rates are low. In 2014, the organization increased wages by 3%. The staff members are committed and rarely seek employment elsewhere. Furthermore, employees adapt to change well and do not complain about changes. Recently, the dress code for nurses changed, and nurses complied with the dress code
Studies have shown that when there are too few nurses for too many patients, patient length of stay is longer, the risk of infections and falls is higher, and overall customer satisfaction lowers, lowering the hospital's image and quality of care. - In the long run, having a lot of resignations and losing patients makes the hospital lose money because looking for staff means using up a lot of time and paying more to administrators just for finding staff. Plus, not having the trust of patients means having fewer people to care for and less and less
Understaffing in hospitals is a major problem that has been affecting healthcare workers and patients for many years. I have chosen to highlight understaffing as a patient safety issue because of the consequences that can arise from it. Shortages in staffing can result in an increase of infection rates (Stone et al., 2007) leading to complications and poorer patient outcomes (Needleman et al. 2002). This particular issue is of interest to me because I have experienced and witnessed it myself. As a midwifery student in a busy maternity hospital, I can appreciate the hard work and dedication each midwife gives to their patients.
Nursing Shortage is a problem we all should be aware of. There are many factors that may lead to a nursing shortage, such as having stressful and unsafe working environments, and our nurses are being overworked. This is a problem we should be aware of because it is affecting the patient care. Nurses would not have enough time to stay with a patient if they have more patients to worry about. Nurses play a big role in our hospitals and communities, “Nurses play significant roles in hospitals, clinics and private practices.
Ethical Issues in Nursing: Nurse-Patient Ratios Megan Harvey, Katie McKelvery, Erica Robbins & Cassandra Tingley St. Johns River State College March 2018 Ethical Issues in Nursing: Nurse-Patient Ratios Every day nurses are faced with ethical dilemmas. Challenges in these situations are becoming more and more complex due to increasing workload and sicker patients. When a nursing unit is understaffed not only are nurses more likely to become burnt out, but their patients are far less likely to receive the quality of care they deserve. The problem is that the Federal regulations require hospitals who participate in Medicare to “have ‘adequate’ numbers of licensed nurses (RN, LPN, CNA) to provide care to all patients as needed,” but the regulations
IntroThe purpose of the article was to evaluate different factors in staffing that affect thequality of resident care in nursing homes. Through the use of data gathered from anumber of surveys and research articles (the majority of which use data from officiallysanctioned databases), several possible conclusions about quality nursing care havebeen drawn and considered. These conclusions are based upon three different factors:staffing measures, quality measures, and risk adjustment variables. For the most part, itseems that a higher licensed nursing staff has the greatest positive impact on quality ofcare with a direct a correlation suggesting that a larger staff will, on average, allow for ahigher quality of care. I would think that this is
One leading problem in nursing “The problems are systemic, primarily because the focus of the corporate giants that control most hospitals now is on profits, not on safe patient care.” . This problem is only becoming worse as hospital CEOs are investing in more machines rather than paying attention to the men and women that went to years of schooling to take care of these people, but this is not only a danger to the patients. With an inappropriate staffing condition it not only threatens the patients as many are left untreated for an unacceptable amount of time, but also threatens the nurses as well as nurses then are put in a higher stress situation than intended, and when people are running around trying to save lives no one can predict what could unfold. The selfishness of the CEO’s of hospitals to save money by investing in machines focus only on the profit they make does not just endanger patients, but nurses as
With nurses working such long hours, it would seem from this study that they are receiving substandard care. This is definitely an issue that needs to be further addressed in healthcare, as the patient should be receiving the best care possible. Needless to say, of the hospital patients surveyed in this study, as the shift length increases especially to the 13+ hour range, a higher number of patients gave the hospital a lower rating. Furthermore, they were less likely to recommend the hospital to family and friends (Stimpfel et al.,
Lack of resources has been linked with ‘missed care’ and a reduction in efficiency so by ensuring that the nurses had all the tools they needed to do their job, both job satisfaction and efficient care was improved. (Blackman et al 2014) The whole process of change was very long and drawn out. A prolonged period of introduction to change and transition has been shown to be less effective than when change is done quickly (Amis, Slack, & Hinings, 2004)
