Personal Essay - Public Shootings Recently, there have been many tragedies in the world, such as shootings, bombings, and terrorist attacks. We all are affected differently by them, some more than others, but these events affect the way we live and how we act. The recent public shootings have affected my life and changed how I live it. The Sandy Hook Elementary and the Aurora movie theater shootings were a result of guns in the hands of the wrong people, and because of this, my life is different than my parents’ lives were when they were kids. Our world has become dangerous and I don’t feel safe anymore. For example, hearing about the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting made me feel scared and nervous. What happened was a gunman had gone into the elementary school and killed many kids. He shot twenty 6 and 7 year old kids and six staff members. …show more content…
Now, wherever I go, I have to be careful and always have a trusted adult with me. You can never know when someone is going to do something crazy or where it’ll be. Once in awhile, my school has surprise lockdown drills. These practices prepare me in case someone comes onto my school campus and has a gun. Also, to prevent this even more, my school has a gate around it and if you want to come on the campus, you must be buzzed in by a school administrator. This method allows the school to know and control who’s coming in and what they are doing. In conclusion, the shootings were a result of gun control issues, and because of this, my life is different than my parents’ lives were when they were kids. They were tragic events that impacted many and affected all of our lives. Even though these horrible events happen and many people are outraged about them, nothing seems to change. I fear that more problems will progress as I grow up and there is only little hope that they will
Some people think that a shooting at their school or workplace will not happen to them. But it can happen to anytime and anywhere. For example how it happened to Shari Thornberg and Matthew Downing. They both did not expect the shooting to happen but it did. Shari Thornberg who was working at the school she works that day heard shots and taught it was the janitor doing something until she heard the janitor screaming don’t shoot
It is a grim matter to those, who walk through this great nation, or flick through the news channels, when they see the statistics, and the headlines of shootings and homicides committed against innocent and defenseless peoples. Now americans everywhere, instead of being able to live their life with a peace of mind, are forced to live with the anxiety and fear that their loved ones will not home from mundane activities such as school, the movies, or even church. These fears aren’t unfounded either. The FBI defines a mass shooting as a public attack in which three or more people are shot, and last year in the USA there were over 427 mass shootings.
Students today live their day-to-day lives in constant fear of what seems inevitable. The United States has one of the highests rates of school shootings in the world. Society has become so desensitized to these shootings that they are no longer shocked to hear about another school falling victim to it. Even when students take a stand against gun violence, the only solution offered to them is a proposition to arm teachers. However, bringing more guns into a school will only further deteriorate the situation.
Teachers could feel more comfortable in their classrooms if they knew they could protect themselves and their students from violent threats. Schools being a gun free zone are a target for violent
Therefore, preventative measures should include information on conflict management, as well, training students and faculty to watch for any warnings signs that could prevent any future shootings (Jablonski, 2008, p. 11). According to an U.S Secret Service study, about half of the attacks of thirty-seven school shootings were resolved and ended before police forces responded to the scene (“Students for Concealed” n.d.). Violence on college campuses is something that can be prevented by increasing awareness and offering training opportunities, students should take a huge role in this prevention since they have a stronger interaction with their peers more than with any other faculty of
Safety is something we all strive for in our lives and we need it as much as we need air. Sadly, recent events in the world have put this safety at risk, something that must be changed. Being a university student, safety at the campus I commune to daily is of the upmost importance. The violence on school campuses has gotten worse as the time goes on, a total of 19 shootings has happened in 2015 alone. This may not seem like a lot, but the 40 deaths in these shootings respectively say different.
Would you want to live in fear? Especially at a place that you feel safe. A place that you are required to go to by law. A place that children roam the hallways, learning and having fun. Can you imagine, going to this place every day, until one.
In the wake of the most reason shoot at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where 17 people died this question continues to be relevant, although it is not a new problem. Since 1999, 150,000 students have experienced a shooting at their school (Cox, Washington Post, 2018). Repeated exposure to violence causes desensitization which is turn prohibits change. This essay will examine when desensitization occurs and who it affects by looking at studies in which people who have experienced violence answered various questions about their
A nonprofit group that attempts to prevent gun violence called “Everytown for Gun Safety,” released a statement about school shootings. The organization claimed that the school shooting at “[Marjory Stoneman Douglas High] is the 18th school shooting in the U.S. in 2018.’” (Cox and Rich). In less than three months, there have been eighteen school shootings. This shows that schools are no longer a safe environment.
Guns On College Campuses You are strolling across the school campus trying to arrive at your upcoming class when a maniac pulls out their rifle and starts spraying bullets. You are witnessing your fellow peers being shot and obliterated, and you do not have any way to defend yourself, so you sprint and attempt to hide. You have no other choice, but to call the police and to have to wait, the average response time of nine minutes, for them to arrive. Hoping, just hoping the shooter does not find you. It is all over the news nowadays.

Emma Gonzalez starts off her speech with a moment of silence to support her 17 fellow students who had recently lost their lives in a tragic shooting at her school, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, just 4 days later. As Gonzalez speaks to a gun control rally, she uses multiple aggressive points to support her claim that a solution to the problem of gun violence needs to be found to assure that there will never be another mass shooting. As Gonzalez stands on the stage in front of the crowd, she begins her speech with an emotional appeal to engage the readers and connect them to the issues she is speaking about. She states, “Every single person up here today, all these people should be home grieving. But instead we are up here standing together because if all our government and President can do is send thoughts and prayers, then it 's time for victims to be the change that we need to see.”
The school environment is one that has been stressed to be a safe and enjoyable place to learn. However, for many individuals, that is not the case. Students around the world have very unique experiences at school, which can unfortunately become abhorrent. According to the Center of Disease Control (CDC), and average of 96 Americans lose their lives to gun violence each day (Gun Violence by the Numbers). There are several causes of death by gun violence, but one of the causes that have become a growing problem is school shootings.
Mass Shootings have been pretty common in the U.S. In the past 30 years or so. According to the Congressional Research Service, there have been 78 mass shootings in the United States since 1983. The shootings have resulted in 547 deaths and 1,023 casualties. Mass shootings are only responsible for a very small percentage of deaths in the United States, but mass shootings are happening more often than ever, a mass shooting happens on average one time a month.
Of course, I understand that they are put in place for our safety at school. However, they simply won’t work anymore. We have done these drills for years now and any shooter that comes in will know what our plan of action is. They will know that we are taught to hide in a corner and pretend that we aren 't in the room. This method is designed so that the shooter thinks that the classroom is empty and will leave that room alone.
