Respect is given to the ones who gain it, not those who insist it. Respect is still a very tremendous virtue followed by a variety Native Americans. In my family being respectful and told you are is a idolization. Native Americans were always told to be respectful to their elders. Respect isn’t always asked for but if you acquire it and or provide it, you will receive it. Respect is a very tremendous morality followed by a variety Native Americans. Elders always tell you to be respectful and Tunkasila (the creator) will award you. As being a Native American myself, I’ve been told to respect your elders, and your parents. Native Americans take great pride in their values, and ways of being. Respect will always be followed by the Native Americans. …show more content…
On my dad’s side of the family, my grandmothers along with grandfathers always told me that I need to respect others. Even if it was just thanking someone for their generosity or taking a plate to one of elders that can’t walk or see. I’m not saying just for the reason that I’m Native American that is the only reason I am respectful, but it’s just how I hold myself. And that is how Native Americans hold themselves. Native Americans were always told to be respectful to their elders. Our elders are wakan (sacred), they are the ones with the most knowledge. Elders are the ones we drive to for advice or help. We thank them by being respectful and mindful of their advice. Native Americans are respectful unless you disrespect them. Respect isn’t always asked for but if you earn it as well as give it, you will receive it. Respect is all about being kind and courteous. If you were to be respectful to everyone you wouldn’t have any respect from anyone. Respect goes both way, you have to give it to earn it also you have receive it in order to gain respect for another individual. You should always hold yourself high with respect not only for yourself but for others as
Honor Or Insult Was America's response to American Indians, in the 18th-20th century, honor or insult? I believe the manner that America responded to the American Indian crisis was necessary but not carried out in the most humane way possible. It allowed America to grow in size to provide land for the whites that would better utilize the land. It helped to better prepare the American Indians for the future that was to come: a more united nation that would help them succeed in a capitalistic world, and it helped them advance with Americans today by means of free college. Although I believe what the early settlers made the country benefit as a whole, I do not agree with the tactics the settlers carried out such as the infringement of treaties
They had all the necessary tools to survive. They knew how to farm, how to hunt, and how to survive. Native Americans had a different culture and belief system than others. A main value of the Native Americans is that they really respect their elders (because the older the wiser); the children were taught how to do everything by their parents and/or grandparents. Techniques and ways of life were passed down through
The excerpts from the given articles express the opinions of three individuals who have influenced Native American history. The influences varied between both positive and negative. Nevertheless, they are all important. The words in each of the excerpts will help enlighten people on how Indians were treated. Each author approached race differently in their excerpts and had different ideas about the Indian race.
If you are mean to someone, then they will be mean back. So if you want to be treated with respect, then you got to give respect to
I was very displeased by the information I learned this week. Native Americans, being the true residents of America, have been treated terribly throughout history. From the enslaving of innocent Native American tribes to receiving low value land, American Indians have not received respect or compassion. The pretentious white men who took over when “discovering” America completely destroyed many Native cultures and beliefs due to selfishness and ignorance.
Respect is a word that has a lot of depth to it no matter what way you use it. The word by definition is kind of hard to pin down concretely because it is subjective, and it can be used in many different ways with many different meanings based on the usage. It is a word that everybody wants a piece of no matter how big or small the piece they get is. All definitions aside, the respect that most people want is the respect that is earned by the showing of honorable actions or personality characteristics. Be it dedication and sacrifices for one’s job or ones moral and ethical views and principles.
Representation Over Education It is in human nature to make assumptions on a topic without understanding the full meaning. Not all of us are experts in Native American culture, but we have all been brainwashed to believe the same things: That they are uneducated savages who have no purpose. This is just one of many examples that which popular culture shapes the way that we view others. We all want to belong
While talking about Native Americans, I try my best to be respectful when dealing with issues that have devastated the Natives for years. I also try to be as assertive and clear as possible when arguing my side of the story and also try to be accurate when addressing my opposing sides story. When constructing a counter argument and rebuttal, I always respect the ideas and views of the opposing side but still try my best to show them that their actions are wrong in the eyes of many others. The only way things are going to get resolved is if we address and talk about
Native Americans have a rich and storied culture; a history rich in struggle, strife and triumph. Native Americans are a unique population that require a higher level of cultural competency. In the human services field. There are many different tribal groups, within Native Americans. Having a clear understanding, and knowledge of issues of the tribal group you are dealing with is helpful with providing services.
Throughout the 19th century Native Americans were treated far less than respectful by the United States’ government. This was the time when the United States wanted to expand and grow rapidly as a land, and to achieve this goal, the Native Americans were “pushed” westward. It was a memorable and tricky time in the Natives’ history, and the US government made many treatments with the Native Americans, making big changes on the Indian nation. Native Americans wanted to live peacefully with the white men, but the result of treatments and agreements was not quite peaceful. This precedent of mistreatment of minorities began with Andrew Jackson’s indian removal policies to the tribes of Oklahoma (specifically the Cherokee indians) in 1829 because of the lack of respect given to the indians during the removal laws.
Respect is important because its kind to do it shows others that you care about people other than yourself. My definition of respect is not playing around when your asked to do something it is doing what you’re supposed to do at that exact time exact place the exact same way they want me to do it it’s not talking when people are talking it’s not getting in people’s way it’s not hitting people it’s being kind to others its being a good person to people. Respect isn’t given it is earned unless you’re a teacher, government official, president, parent, or any kind of boss that tells people what and or how to do things because those students or people have to listen to you and if they don’t they get punished. Respect can be earned it can be given
Respecting is something we use today and its something we have used for hundreds of
Respect, everybody wants it, but few actually get it. True respect is not something that you can impose or ask from others; it is something that others gives to you from their own will and it is not that easy to get. We live in a feminized society and most people are egocentric, immature and do not follow tradition and honor code anymore. A lot of people will be jealous of your success and start hating you instead of respecting you.
“We worship in that way. It teaches us to be thankful for all the favors we receive; to love each other and to be united. We never quarrel about religion” (Red Jacket 231), the natives feared that introducing new principles would create rifts and endless quarrels between tribe members. Their beliefs also gave them their own special identity which separated them from other nations and they were immensely proud of
