My response to this objection is the following. It is true that having my mom and sister both as nurses and having several extended family members in the nursing profession as well could of have influenced my decision on my major. Nonetheless, from my previous experiences in a nursing care home, I know that I like the aspects of nursing and that I am pursuing a nursing career for the benefit of myself, not because I feel obligated to. Despite the pressure of becoming known for following in my family of nurse’s footsteps, I convey numerous qualities as that of a nurse. One being compassionate as shown through taking care of my siblings and showing emotional support through my friends. Although there are other health-related career fields, such as being a doctor or a physician assistant, that I could have chosen, nursing allows me to look at the patient as a whole, instead of their diagnosis, allowing for a more holistic care approach. As a child growing up, there are many things that one usually aspires to be. However, many factors influence one’s choices. The most influential factor that led me to pursue a career in nursing was the time I spent caring for my grandmother, who was diagnosed with cancer. As I contemplated what to write, emotions ran high as I reflected on my past and recalled seeing my grandmother struggle during her illness. The pain and suffering she endured drove me to enter the healthcare field.
My Intent to Be a Nurse Practitioner Coming from a third world country where there aren’t many opportunities for work and funding for education, proceding to nursing school was a grand opportunity. The privilege to attend a government subsidized school where top students in the region compete to get into the program that allowed only 60 students per year was indeed a blessing. As clinical rotations began, what was once considered a mere opportunity evolved into a true passion for caring as I truly love and enjoy nursing and helping people.

My interest in the nursing profession was not made conscious until I realized that inherently, I am a caregiver. Taking care of someone feels as if it is second nature to me. Being so, I found a passion for assisting others in a professional environment. I believe a job as a certified nurse assistant will give me a better insight while working beside nurses and observe what set of skills nurses use. My desire to work in the field of nursing has stemmed from my childhood. When I was a toddler I got into in a serious car accident that left me hospitalized for around 6 months. Of course, a lot of nurses became involved with my treatment and growing up my grandmother would tell me of how well they took care of me. The nurses were very attentive of changing the bandages on my wounds which were very severe. I have always exhibited the desire to help people who are injured and ill.
Nursing is an incredible opportunity to have a special connection with people. Growing up I lived on a farm in a rural community When we had a traumatic event happen at our farm, many in our community rallied around my family and helped give a lot of support. It was a phenomenal experience to witness community members, that I personally did not know, show their support to my family in many unexpected ways. Through this experience, I witnessed the power of community and how it can personally affect families, which is why I decided to peruse a career that would allow me to give back to my community.
Along with observing the nurse-patient relationship, my love of anatomy and biology influenced me to pursue nursing. Anatomy and biology are subjects which appeal to me, so much so that I earned an “A” in my anatomy class, which at my school is taught similarly to an AP level class. I also placed into AP Biology for a senior class. All of these indicators evince my passion for the nursing field.
