Reflection Paper As a writer, I feel like I really grew a lot in this past semester. I developed some specific writing strategies and techniques. Now before writing a paper, I take the time to think about it instead of just jumping into it. I will set time aside to pre-write and use writing techniques like freewriting and revising. I have learned that it is easier to begin writing the paper a week before instead of the night before. In high school it was easy to do it the night before but in college you have so much more going on with other classes that it is less stressful just to get it out of the way. Peer editing was never my thing up until this year, I did not like other reading my paper and I did not really like reading other’s papers.
I came into my first college writing class feeling prepared thanks to you and your investment in me as a student in your AP Lang class. I developed as a writer more than I ever had in your class, and it definitely helped me in my college writing class this semester. I already knew how important it was to revise and continuously critically think about my writing, as well as the importance of multiple drafts and peer review. My English 110 class this semester was very similar to yours because we also did multiple drafts where I could revise my paper as many times as needed. The big difference was that the focus was on different genres and how to appeal to those, which was something new compared to my high school English courses.
My history as a writer has been a bit of a struggle of slow development. From a young age I had a hard time with spelling and this is still a trouble area for me, even with the help of autocorrect. As I grew in age and as a writer my problematic area became not including enough nitty gritty details. My bad experiences that I recall would always involve the start of writing because I struggle with beginning paragraphs. Also, I tend to use the ending paragraph to just repeat myself, so overall my first and last paragraphs are usually shit.
Chapter one: The Usual —Laura sighed as she wiped the small drips of sweat off her forehead. She had been on her feet since 9 am and it was currently 6:45 pm, her shift was going to end in fifteen minutes. Laura had waited all day for him to arrive and order his usual, but for some odd reason he hadn't shown up yet. She figured he had found another coffee shop where he wouldn't have to see her face. She took a deep breath and held it in for a few seconds.
Writing is a form of expressing yourself with words from your own thoughts and I have always seen writing for being creative and not just for school obligations. I use to write for fun; writing things based on book or movie reviews, letters to loved ones, or write my own thoughts down so I won’t forget later. Obviously, I wrote whatever came to mind, and was not too concerned on grammar or paragraph and sentence structure. I hoped that within this class, I can take myself serious and actually learned to use them properly. Therefore, I feel like I accomplished my goals by learning and applying the basics of writing.
Progression over the Semester After completing Honors English 126 in the Fall Semester of 2018, I thought I had learned all there was to know on how to become a good writer. However, after taking English 211, I soon discovered there is more to expand on and learn in the writing process. Throughout the course of this semester, I learned how to properly set up and write an annotated bibliography, how to organize my work better, and how to critically think about my paper topic. Coming into this course, I had some prior experience setting up an annotated bibliography.
Session 11: Unit 2, lesson 4. Writing a Memoir 1 The way thing worked out that summer, was wondrous, having to attend this Teen Bible College (TBC) was last minute and I ended up going on the unplanned missionary trip after. Spending a month and half with these fifty-six people you barley met, you become family. Good times and tough times where all there, just somehow we got more and more attached to each other.
My strength in writing are all over the place, I feel like I am good at choosing the right words for what I’m writing, at least the words that are in my vocabulary. I hope that I can get better at writing essays and the more serious assignments, I also want to get better at writing book style writings, like having to write like an author of a book I’m reading to write a “chapter 0”. I think I haven’t really changed my thinking of my writing, I just write to do it, I don’t analyse my writing unless it’s something I’m really interested in. Organization helps me, or it hurts me, my disorganization that is, I’m very disorganised if you couldn’t tell by now, my brain is always everywhere, and so are my possessions, and my writing. My brain is all over the place just like my work, my PAW lessons are staggered between one attempt perfection, and ten attempts with
The comments from my instructor, the online material, my research, the online writing center and comments from other students in the discussion boards have helped me so much to improve my writing skills. In the writing process, the step that I feel I have improved a lot is editing, as I am constantly reading my writings and editing them as I finish them, over and over again before I publish them. The steps in the writing process that I like the most are finding a topic in the Pre-writing step and Drafting. I like having a lot of ideas floating around and think about which idea is the best and the most exciting topic to talk about.
Ever since I could write, I have written stories and forced adults to read them. I actually got loads of compliments on them, even having a teacher tell me that I was going to be an author when I was older. Suddenly that became my dream, I was determined to be the next J.K Rowling or Neil Gaiman. Everybody told me that I could be whatever I wanted to be, so why not be a world famous author? I very strongly believed in my ability to make my dream a reality until I got to middle school and teachers and adults starting telling my peers and I that our dreams of becoming astronauts, presidents, and the next Leonardo Dicaprio (but with more oscars), were childish and that we needed to pick careers that were actually attainable.
If I am given a writing assignment I can usually get it done quickly and effectively. I enjoy writing about things that are interesting to me. The writing process is easier than it seems; writing is a subject where you can just go off of what you are thinking instead of searching through numerous books and websites like you may have to do in other classes. I usually get my ideas and inspiration from subjects centered around the topic we are given. I like to listen to music while I write and be in an environment where I can get my work done without people bothering me.
One of my biggest writing errors that I have now learned to fix is comma splice errors, which is when I incorrectly connected my sentences with only a comma. This paper also made me realize that in the first draft you can forget a lot of details that you think you put in. Then when spending the time to revise you can make your paper more engaging to the audience by adding the missed details. When finished with this paper it made me realize that I need to work on my lead-ins and thesis at the beginning of my paper to grab the reader and tried to improve this with each of my papers that followed. Then in my second paper I took what I learned from the first paper and worked to improve my
My Writing Experience In previous courses, my writing skills have been mediocre or just enough to pass the class. Throughout the duration of this course, I have written a variety of papers using different techniques and skills. Previously I would write assuming that the only audience would be my instructor. This course has helped me realize that there are many steps and skills involved with writing a well-organized and easy to comprehend essay.
We wrote four paper assignments this quarter, two of them about the story we read in class, one from a story and outside material and one about English 101 class at itself which is this paper. We must submit the rough draft before the due date of the assignment, which helps us to have clarification from our instructor and from a classmate. I am always improving after each paper I wrote, because I follow up with the comment I received, edit my paper then make an appointment with my instructor before I submit my final draft. These comments make me feel confident in the next paper. Writing in something that you can improve your knowledge and the way of thinking, comparing to my papers, I will discuss how I developed revisions strategies, learned proper citation, and how pre-writing can help improve my writing.
As I sit on the floor of my living room writing, I begin to fully recognize how great of an impact the adult figures in my life have on me. When I was younger my love for reading along with the encouragement of my teacher then made believe I wanted to be a writer. I have always loved reading, and this love pushed me to want to add my writing to the great world of literature. I knew it was difficult to be a writer but I was determined in a simple manner to accomplish this.
