Macbeth Power corrupts. A simple truth, oft repeated. However, for Macbeth, that truth became all too real, as he became corrupted simply to attain power. At the beginning of Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth, the title character is a Thane in Scotland, a high rank. On his journey home from war, he and his friend Banquo encounter three witches, who appear, as Banquo describes them, as “women, and yet your beards forbid me to interpret that you are so.” (1.3.47-48) These hags prophesy that Macbeth will become Thane of Cawdor, to add to his title Thane of Glamis, and, eventually, king. Confounded, Macbeth demands an explanation, though none is forthcoming. For one, there was his trusty partner and best friend, Banquo. From the beginning, Banquo distrusted the witches and their prophesies, cautioning his friend not to take them seriously. If someone would have tried to persuade Macbeth to murder the king, it assuredly would not have been Banquo. Despite noble Banquo’s close relationship with the title character, one person held more sway over the Thane of Glamis than anyone, perhaps even the Thane himself: Lady Macbeth. Indeed, she assists Macbeth in the heinous crime, constantly pressing him to cast aside his apprehensions. Mourning the weakness and inability of her gender, Lady Macbeth urges her husband to follow through with their devious designs. Inevitably, he gives in and completes the first of many horrendous deeds. Out of all his associates, Macbeth’s wife may actually have pushed him to murder to obtain the kingdom, with or without a prophecy. Yet, she could have had apprehensions of her own, or doubted her husband’s ability, thus deciding to keep her ambitions to herself. Macbeth is first introduced as Thane of Glamis, who goes to war leading the Scottish troops to victory over invading forces. On his arrival after successfully winning the battle, he meets the witches who hail him by his first title Thane of Glamis, then Thane of Cawdor, and King. This last title confused him; he wondered how he would be king if King Duncan is alive. He then sends a letter to Lady Macbeth about this revelation in which she is sold in by the thought of being queen, leading her and Macbeth to plot and execute the killing of King Duncan.
Macbeth is easily manipulated by Lady Macbeth and questions his manhood. Macbeth’s ambition urges him to prove her wrong and show that he is the one in power, as well as his fearlessness towards his hallucinations of bottled guilt and
(1.3.126-128). To reinforce what Banquo says, Macbeth already knows that he is thane of Glamis. There is a battle going on, and the thane of Cawdor died, but Macbeth has yet to hear wind about it. The witches could have knowledge about this, and just told him what he wants to hear about being king
Because Macbeth’s and Lady Macbeth’s decision to murder Duncan, Both face the guilt of the power they abused portrays on the shadows that reflect on them as well as the natural consequences they will face. During the first half of the play, Lady Macbeth expresses her unnatural feelings and this is demonstrated through the corruption of power when she want’s to hire people to kill Duncan because she thinks that Macbeth is too scared. At first, when Lady Macbeth hinted “Their drenchèd natures lies as in a death”(1.7.78). This demonstrates that Lady Macbeth is characterizing corruption of power due to the fact that she want's to kill Duncan, therefore she can be queen of cawdor while Macbeth is king.
The witches in Macbeth are seen as mysterious creatures putting thoughts in his head and bringing out the true evil in Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. “When shall we three meet again” says the first witch in act 1 scene 1. In act 1 scene 3 the three witches greet macbeth as “Thane of Glamis” (as he is), “Thane of Cawdor”, and “king hereafter.” They then promise Banquo that he will father kings, then the three witches disappear. This information that the witches gave Macbeth poisned his mind making him greedy, and bringing out the true evil in Macbeths soul.
