Over the course of this paper I will be discussing the main topic of the election that not only affects the United States of America, but the world in general. It is an election that can either change the course of history for the better or for the worse. This election occurs in between each term of the elected individual each of the two terms they could possibly serve. What election am referring to you may ask? The election that I am talking about is of course the presidential election. The presidential election is an event in which citizens’ of the United States are given the grand opportunity to voice their opinions and let their feelings be heard loudly and clear. The citizens of the United States are given the opportunity to vote for a …show more content…
The tie in between the information I provide earlier and now, is that the citizens of the United States are given the opportunity to speak their mind and let their feelings be known with a simple vote. Continuing, the president who wins the presidency office is the person who gets their point across the best towards the citizens of America and give them the greatest belief that they would be able to help to stimulate the country and make it as successful as possible. As I end my explanation on what exactly the presidential election process is, I would like to address the main questions in which this essay must address. To answer the question of whether or not the presidential election process is faithful to our democratic ideals, I would say that it is. I definitely believe that the presidential election is extremely faithful, due to the fact that it gives the citizens of America the chance to have the voices heard and their opinion on the direction the country is headed in for the next 4 to 8 years due to most presidents having a possible chance to have 2 terms in office. Continuing, if you ask what exactly is democracy in terms of our ideals towards it, you could bring up the point of it being the eligibility of every citizen having the chance …show more content…
Many citizens of the United States do not vote and expect for the presidential election to be faithful to our democratic ideas when their not being democratic during the actual election. It is also saying a lot when we chose not to be more democratic for presidential elections, but we expect for the government and presidential elections to be more faithful to our
The current system is undemocratic. The electorate does not officially elect the president, those who are apart of the electorate college elected the president. No other country holds their election in such a convoluted manner.” “Our nation witnessed the result of allowing the Electoral College to determine the
The turmoil, upheaval, and controversy of the 2016 Trump election is a significant current event of the modern world, but this landslide election is not the first in America’s history to raise such conflicting opinions. The Revolution of 1800 was another shift in political history that impacted not only the candidates, but majority of the public. The defeat of John Adams to Vice President Thomas Jefferson led to the rise of the Democratic-Republican Party rule and the eventual demise of the Federalist Party. Often in politics, opposing views, scandals, and negative publicity plays a role in the election process, due to this, in both the 2016 election and 1800 election negative criticism from both parties was evident. The 1800 and 2016 elections
When the people of the United States vote for president, they are voting
First you decide which candidate you will vote for. Then you just see as the voting goes on in your state and see how many electoral votes will choose the future president. Trent England proclaimed, "The people vote to determine how their state will cast its electoral votes. The candidate with a majority of those electoral votes becomes president. It isn't really that complicated, and it certainly isn't undemocratic.
Thus hindering our nation 's democracy even more. For even the constitution states "we the people" rather than "we the government". Another issue is "since the birth of the electors college, 157 electors have not casted their votes to the candidate 's they represent". Shockingly enough, this issue has been allowed to be proceeded since the birth of the electoral college. Providing Americans with no true democracy
The results of the election of 2000 will have implications on the United States for at least four years, and perhaps more. The day after the election, calls were already ringing out for the abolition of the Electoral College, along with as many calls defending it. This could indicate a sea change to how we elect our President - or it could amount to nothing at all. If nothing else, the election of 2000 renewed the prominence of the Constitution in the minds of the common
Robert Montgomery Mr. Bowers Comp I November A Failed System In America, where we idealize democracy and the voice of the people, we have a system in place to elect our highest official that not only suppresses millions of voters but also flies blatantly in the face of democracy. The Electoral College is the institution that has decided on the outcome of dozens of presidential elections. It is a system that was flawed when it was implemented just over 200 years ago, and in the modern era, it has outrightly failed. Under the College, the states do not have equal pull in the election due to many factors.
In 1787, years after the founding of the United States, the Constitutional Convention met to decide how the new nation would govern itself. The delegates understood that the need for a leader was necessary but still bitterly remembered how Britain abused of its power. The delegates agreed that the President and Vice President should be chosen informally and not based on the direct popular vote, thus gave birth to the Electoral College. The Electoral College is defined as “a body of people representing the states of the US, who formally cast votes for the election of the president and vice president.” Since 1787 the Electoral College has been the system for voting in the United States, but with our nation ever more changing and growing it
The United States currently faces a severe problem with one of their governmental processes. In the democratic system of the United States, politicians are elected by voting from the citizens, in most cases. The problem the United States is facing is that people are no longer voting in elections for officials. This problem is discussed in the article, “In praise of low voter turnout”, written by Charles Krauthammer. The main idea behind this article is that voters are no longer interested in politics, as they were in previous generations.
The United States Is a democratic government. The citizens of this amazing country vote for the president, the govern of their state, vice president, ect. We also have a choice to vote or not to vote. That is one of the best things that we have in the way that our government. Not all the people in the country pay attention to who is running or what they are wanting to do when they are in office.
Several years after the United States came to be, the Constitutional Convention met to determine how the new nation should govern itself. The delegates saw that it was crucial to have a president and vice president, but the delegates did not want these offices to reflect how the colonies were treated under the British rule. The delegates believed that the president’s power should be limited, and that he should be chosen through the system known as the Electoral College. The Electoral College is a body of people who represent the states of the US, who formally cast votes for the electing of the president and vice president. Many citizens feel that the Electoral College goes against our nation’s principle of representative democracy, while others
However, one of the key characteristics of a healthy democracy is a high voter-turnout. If people do not turn up on Election Day, it is likely that they do not see the point of holding elections or the conditions are not suitable for them to vote. People vote because they believe that their vote has the power to make changes in the country. Voter apathy often develops when voters do not see voting as a way of voicing their concerns. America therefore continues to tread on risky ground, if a way of increasing voter turnout is not found.
If the nation was involved in a crisis, government organization can be thrown off balance by a change in leadership. In addition, a president with more experience can be more beneficial to the nation’s well-being. If a president is popular and does a good job, perhaps it is best that he stays in the office. On this note, some people argue that the voters should be able to choose the president regardless of time in the presidential office. By choosing the president, people are participating in government and should be able to choose whomever they see fit to hold
This article relates to Chapter 8 because we learn more in depth about the electoral college. In the chapter and in the article we learn about how it all comes down to the system called Electoral College who choose the winner. This topic is important because it is good to be well-informed and learn
In the United States, people always talk about freedom and equality. Especially they want elections could be more democratic. In American Democracy in Peril, Hudson’s main argument regarding chapter five “Election Without the People’s Voice,” is if elections want to be democratic, they must meet three essential criteria, which are to provide equal representation of all citizens, to be mechanisms for deliberation about public policy issues, and to control what government does. Unfortunately, those points that Hudson mentions are what American elections do not have. American elections do not provide equal representation to everyone in the country.
