Importance - Since the founding of our country, people have had the right to keep and bear arms under the The Second Amendment. The Second Amendment reads “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The Second Amendment of the Constitution was enforced so people could defend themselves if the British tried to take away their freedom. Through the 20th and the early 21st century, gun control has been a very controversial issue. Some people think that the use of guns should be banned because of the …show more content…
Evidence - According to MotherJones.com, “there have been at least 69 mass shootings in the last three decades—and most of the killers got their guns legally.” 75% of the guns used for mass shootings are obtained legally. The information recorded of the details of the most recent mass shootings prove that they included firearms purchased from legal gun dealerships. Firearms can be obtained too easily and the absence of stricter firearm laws is the absence of safety in the U.S. b. The point of gun control is to make sure that it’s safe for citizens to purchase firearms, and prevent felons and people who are mentally ill from purchasing them. However without stricter rules/laws, anybody can purchase a firearm. Evidence - In 1989, California banned the possession of semiautomatic firearms prior to the massacre of five children. Stricter laws were made in order to prevent further massacres. According to CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/16/us/20-deadliest-mass-shootings-in-u-s-history-fast-facts/) from the years 1949 to the present 25+ mass shootings have
Gun Control and Mass Shootings in America Gun violence is an unquestionable issue in America, with the United States ranking as one of the worst with both homicides and suicides using guns. That being said, we outnumber Mexico in gun related deaths and among first-world countries we rank far above others in the number of gun deaths, such as England and Australia. Consequently, we live in one of the only first world countries that does not have extensive gun laws and restrictions to gun access. Aside from the countless homicides and suicides by firearm in this country, one particular issue within this predicament is mass shootings, with the most recent mass shooting occurring on February 14th, 2018 at a high school in Parkland, Florida where 17 people were killed. Although, it may seem like an easy fix to just implement gun control laws into our society to eliminate gun violence, but it is important to note that Americans own nearly half of all firearms globally, which is roughly 325 million guns;
Considering the most recent mass shootings, the US needs to entrench strict gun control, however people needs something to protect themselves with, and gun control will not change the value of human life. Late in year 1791, the first ten amendments of the U.S Constitution, also known as the Bill of Rights, were ratified. The second amendment said the following, “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and
Gun control has been a controversial issue for many years. Many citizens believe that if gun control is strictly enforced it would reduce the threat of crime. People have the right to bear arms for protection, or even just the pleasure of hunting and recreational activity. With the recent events involving firearms and mass shootings, people are skeptical whether to increase or decrease gun laws. Americans have a constitutional right to own handguns and stricter laws and licensing will not effectively save lives.
After all, the second amendment states everyone has the right to bear arms and should not be infringed. 30,000 people are killed each year by firearms, and in order to lower this number I strongly believe a potent system needs to be put intact for everyone who wishes to obtain a gun. Although it has been shown time after time that nearly anyone can get their hands on a firearm no matter what laws are in effect. While researching about gun control laws and its pros and cons, I came across an article discussing how these laws will not prevent criminals from killing. Out of the 62 mass shootings in the U.S. between 1982 and 2012, 49 of the killers legally obtained the firearm they used.
Gun control is what restricts people from buying and using guns, but these laws are not strengthened at the extent they need to be strengthened. This leads to many people getting these guns and using them to cause mass shootings all over the U.S. For example, according to the Council on Foreign Relationship, a news article that covers major world issues, in 2017, mass shootings at a music festival in Las Vegas and at a church near San Antonio have rekindled the gun control debate (“U.S. Gun Policy: Global Comparisons”). The fact that gun control is still not tightened is a huge margin and error, and still causes mass shootings as we just covered. Many people have said that we should not allow guns to be purchased, which would seem like the logical option. However, according to the same source, Council on Foreign Relationship, some states, such as Idaho, Alaska, and Kansas, have passed various laws attempting to nullify
According to a poll by CNN, forty-nine percent of Americans support stricter gun control, while fifty percent oppose. With the question of gun control constantly brought up with well thought out arguments from both sides, the topic has become one of the most controversial issues in American Society today. Before delving into this issue, a person must understand what the current regulations on firearms are. The highest law in the land, the United States Constitution, made the original laws on gun control as stated in the second amendment.
Gun Control Gun control over the years has been a controversial subject, with people arguing for both sides. The 2nd amendment states that everyone in the U.S. has a right to bear arms. Mass shootings and suicides by firearm have been a growing concern for many people living in the U.S. Numerous people making the argument that there should be more gun control. Having gun control would help lessen the deaths by firearms in the country for a variety of reasons.
What are the main points in the debate over gun control in the United States? America the land of opportunity, or so it seems has been under scrutiny. Although many individuals have categorically formed ideas on gun control, the debate is complex and has strong devotees on both wings. The pros and cons of gun control originated to the front of dispute in the stir of mass shootings that remain to arise throughout the nation.
The nationwide availability of these guns creates a major problem regarding who buy them, from general gun stores, to gun shows / conventions, to even Walmart, getting ahold of a gun is still pretty easy in this year. Especially at gun shows though, some where you ¨don 't have to go through a background check when they make a purchase at a gun show¨ (Smith). Aaron Smith, a writer from CNN, claims in his article about how easy it is to obtain a weapon, and how although shootings seem to go up, gun control laws seem to stand still. Without making it rules for obtaining these guns then how can we continue to be surprised by the constant mass shootings perpetrated by these criminals?
Some states require permits to purchase guns, while others don’t. Some states also restrict the ability of a person to purchase an assault weapon, which has shown to be the weapon of choice for most mass shootings. The law should be the same in each state to facilitate enforcement while protecting the rights of citizens who legally have guns to move unrestricted across state lines. People who purchase guns should also have to go through 100% background checks. Guns should not be given to people who are unstable or could be a possible danger to civilian’s
Strict regulations and limitations have been pursued already and clearly do not suffice. Statics brought to attention by gun control opponents, show that gun control laws have done little to reduce crime rates. Several restrictions have been made on certain guns, considered as overly dangerous, though in the hands of an unstable criminal even a legal hunting gun can be deadly. Countless restrictions have been made, however people have still found ways around them. If people are unstable and determined enough, they will find a gun, regardless of the restrictions or regulations.
From all the fighting within the world about gun control and the rights of guns. For it is not a gun that can kill an individual it’s the individual using that particular weapon. Those shootings throughout the United States have occurred due to weapons being in the wrong hands. People believe by placing new laws to ban guns or to simply limiting the amount you can buy of ammo in a transaction. Along with the background check they run, the responsibility of controlling people using your weapon and you’re responsible if anyone kills or hurt an individual with your gun.
v. Heller, The US Supreme Court agrees with me when they say: The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home(gun-control.procon.org). But if gun control is enforced, this will not be true. It will leave lawful
The number of incidents of gun violence last year in the United States was about 60,000. In recent years, the number of mass shooting has risen to about one mass shooting per day in the United States. The country is divided with some wanting to reevaluate our gun control laws and either ban or add additional regulations to the purchase of guns. Others say it is our right for Americans to own guns and something the founding fathers considered important to put in the Bill of Rights. The number of firearm sales has risen with the number of mass shooting many Americans question if banning guns or certain guns could help decrease the number of gun violence deaths.
To begin with, the second amendment of the US constitution gives citizens the right to carry or possess a gun. As a result, gun violence in America has increased drastically over the years due to guns being utilised in a reprehensible manner and people getting wedged in the crossfire, hence why stringent law enforcements need to be put in place regarding guns in the US. “Since 1982, there have been at least 61 mass murders carried out with firearms; in most cases, the killers had obtained their weapons legally”.
