The Writer’s Diet Upon carrying out the WritersDiet Test, the results presented a pattern of excessive use of ‘waste words’ that are it, this, that, and there. This is an area that I realize requires a significant improvement as a doctoral-level writer. Although my writing has been significantly improving since writing the My Family Assignment, Dr. Noonan 's recommendations and the result of the WritersDiet Test are useful in point out to the fact that I have to improve on the dependence on many ‘waste word.’ In my previous assignment, I realize that I used this in two consecutive sentences in manner that was not appropriate. “The assertions made by the National Dropout Prevention Center/Network support this idea. Therefore, the focus of this narrative puts…” in these two …show more content…
Additionally, my constant need for reading various masterpieces would also allow me follow patterns used by prominent authors with strong writing prowess. By the application of the given approaches, I look forward to having an improved ability to write in a better manner. However, since writing is a learning process, a future challenge could be the inability to improve suddenly as my already established style could require time to improve. Yet, I believe that change also requires constant practice dedication, and commitment, values that I hold dearly. The use of the be-verbs is another area that require improvement. From the WritersDiet Test, I realize a significant use of be-verbs. A particular case is the use of are, been, and was. Although these words play a crucial role in the English language, I came to realize that their usage in academic writing should be appropriate and formal as opposed to their verbal application. With this understanding, I intent to continue practicing on the appropriate means in which to use these verbs
“They’ll turn us into writing robots”, a student contends against the use templates influencing the structure of their essays. (10) In the book “They Say/ I Say”: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein insist that the use of their relevant templates provide tools that will enhance the readers writing skills. These templates provide an exemplary format that one can use when writing an essay. Graff and Birkenstein suggests that, “Instead of focusing solely on abstract principles of writing, then, this book offers model templates that help you put those principles directly into practice.”
Weight Watcher: Style Analysis Essay The article Weight Watcher by Dara-Lynn Weiss connotes fearful and neglectful tones. The story deals with a mother overcoming skepticism, scorn, and fear that she was doing more harm than good when she put her seven-year-old daughter on a strict diet.
I hope to someday be a writer and inspire others with my writing. The only way I believe I can do that is if I learn useful writing techniques. Not only do I want to gain more literary skills, but I also want to learn and have experiences in the core classes. In the core classes, I hope to

Breaking the Five-Paragraph-Theme Barrier “The five-paragraph essay theme is a national phenomenon,” wrote Thomas E. Nunnally, “Students from all over are proficient in the form” (3). He is right that students are constantly being taught that the five-paragraph essay is the proper format when it comes to writing an essay. The five-paragraph essay does have some usefulness as a guide and an organizational technique when formatting essays. However due to its lack of creativity and restricting nature, it is sometimes not the ideal choice when it comes to writing articles such as research and journal articles.
The article by Donald Murray entitled, “The Maker’s Eye: Revising Your Own Manuscripts” provides readers a better understanding of the writing process and argues that writers learn to write, by writing and rewriting. Murray also contends that writers must learn to be their own best enemy. Well, I believe I have this trait covered! I will confess, that I purposely saved this course for last, due to the number of years between my last structured learning experience and returning to school to complete a BSN degree.
The effectiveness of one’s word usage is an important foundational aspect of rhetoric and advanced writing. Chapter four of the textbook, “Writing for Success” by Scott Mclean is entitled, “Working with Words,” it breaks down common mistakes writers make, gives strategies and tips on how to avoid them. It also focuses on what is needed to help develop strong meaningful sentences in order to leave the desired impression with a reader. The first section of the chapter
This chapter can help young writers in English class with their papers in many different ways. For instance, Trimble gives examples on what a veteran writer does in order to make their writing interesting. He also gives out techniques on how you can get a reader’s attention or how you can fix your writing to make it readable instead of having nonsense. What makes this difficult for me as a writer is that I write what ever comes to my mind and it will not make sense. Another thing that makes it difficult for me as a writer is that I am not good at getting the readers attention and having him hooked on to my work.
Identify three writing principles from this chapter that you most need to work on. For each principle, write a paragraph about why you want to improve in this area and how you will go about doing it. Choose from the following writing principles: be specific; be accurate; control paragraph length; use short sentences in most cases; avoid redundancy; avoid empty phrases; use action verbs when possible; use active voice; use short and familiar words and phrases; avoid buzzwords and figures of
This semester was filled with many bumpy roads. I struggled in the beginning of the semester with my writings , as I didn 't feel confident enough to write a well developed writing. I seemed to find myself struggling whereas writing was not my favorable subject. The major errors I had in my writings this semester would be , grammatical errors, work citations, transition words, formatting ,paragraph development, sentence structure , and sentence level issue. Therefore I have set goals to improve my writing in the future.
I am now able to see the areas in which I lack in but I also recognize my strengths as well. To become a precise writer, you have to take the initiatives that will help you do so. These initiatives consist of working on different academic genres, planning and organizing material, identifying purpose and audience and for revising intentionally. It is also includes reading different types of texts and learning how to understand a writer’s argument and respond to the ideas of others.
This is not one of those ‘snake oil’ diets that will boost your energy, cure your ail- ments, protect you from cancer, keep heart disease at bay, improve your life love and ensure your happiness. The Mindset Diet is targeted directly and exclusively at weight loss. Though, of course, losing weight has health benefits. The diet itself is no more or less healthy than the food you are eating right now, because it is based on the normal, everyday foods you buy and eat.
Writing has always been an issue but yet interesting subject of mine. As hard as I try and write essays, and papers I just can’t get the hang of writing. But after taking this class, I did learn different writing technique and improved my writing proficiency, material body of formatting, and how to uncovering and properly use sources. Through class exams, essays, and a research paper, I was able to learn new writing skills. Although I have learned a variety of things, my writing still needs improvement.
Each essay I wrote took me several time to write, several drafts which show that I have improve every time I do the drafts to write a perfect masterpiece. I learned a lot of skills and techniques this quarter, which has helped me to improve and progress my writing skills for the future. I will remember the skills, techniques, and tips that professor gave us in this English class for my higher education. For example, all the time that I went to visit professor Sapozhnikov office hours to receive help on my out-of -class essays has helped me to improve, grow, and progress in my writing skills as a writer. Some of the significant changes I have made as I was progressing and growing were to develop a strong thesis to help support my claims as I write my essays, such as facts, observations, illustration, and examples.
I know I will never reach the point I can not learn any more about writing or reading, where I can no longer improve. I have tried so many things, done so many things, read so many things that impacted me and my view on the world, and through me, my writing. All of my experiences have molded me into who I am right now. I may already know how to ‘write’, to press buttons or move pencils until legible scribbles form, but I am still learning, and will continue to learn until I die, how to write. I am still learning how to infuse black ink with depth and meaning, to make my sloppy scrawl touch someone’s heart or influence them.
