Claims are made throughout the entire documentary by various people surrounding sexual assault in the military. The United States military works around hidden corners to avoid having a bad reputation due to assault or rape, was the first claim made. This is revealed by victims willing to share their stories. They were all told to “stop crying and realize that they brought this onto themselves”by their commanders. Therefore, his gives insight into the larger picture because the commander did not stop the sexual assault nor did they receive empathy after surviving a life changing event. Next, the second claim made occurs within the second half of the documentary; The military covers up sexual assault not only to the public, but also to the government, …show more content…
The first use of a rhetorical strategy can be seen when women told their commanders of the assault and their responses to the victims. This is an aphorism due to the commanders speaking a statement of opinion in a brief witty manner. Moreover, these women were quickly dismissed by their commanders saying they brought this upon themselves and it was their fault to begin with. This is effective within the documentary because most individuals know that rape and sexual assault is not brought on by the victims. In addition, an anecdote is used. Following reading other women’s rape stories, one victim explains her road back to being herself. “I am finally learning how to be a woman again and I am really trying to have fun with it. I’m not forcing myself into places I don’t want to be in, but I’m recovering me,” cried Regina Vasquez. The use of this anecdote greatly appeals to the audience and their emotions in understanding how much sexual assault changes one’s life. Finally, the entire film is explicit. No information regarding how the rapes occurred are left out nor is what followed afterwards. More examples regarding this will be cited in logos and …show more content…
Over 20% of women within the military have been sexually assaulted, as well as 1% of men. Yes, men as well. The terrible thing regarding this statistic, is that it leads to another one. Of all the rapes that occur, usually only 175 perpetrators get jail time for their crime and wrongdoing. Not surprisingly, this loops around to the commanders not reporting the rape and the military covering it up. According to the department that investigates crimes within the military, there are other “higher priority” things to worry about. All of these statistics and facts strengthen the argument made by The Invisible War tremendously due to the military’s level or ignorance and incompetence to solve the issue. The final point that may shock the audience is the Feres Doctrine. This doctrine means that an individual cannot sue the United States military if they received an injury during their time of service. One victim who lost both plates in her face due to her rapist punching her, cannot receive the surgery she needs to do normal activities with her daughter because the military and VA system will not provide the money to cover it. This improves the overall argument by throughoroly explaining how far the military will go to limit the amount of sexual assault reported. Although, while the use of logos is effective, pathos is even
The war in Vietnam to do this day has gone down as one of the influential and controversial wars in United States history. The war lasted from 1955 to 1975.The nation as a whole began to uproar over the war and the major consequences of the war. There were many reasons why so many Americans were against the war. Public opinion steadily turned against the war following 1967 and by 1970 only a third of Americans believed that the U.S. had not made a mistake by sending troops to fight in Vietnam (Wikipedia). This presents a fallacious appeal to authority. The viewer automatically assumes the U.S. military is linked with this program because silhouette logo portrays one soldier helping another, and the image represents the military’s value of “no man left behind.” The advertisement’s use of ethos is meant to be effective because the audience perceives the United States military as a large, authoritative force. The viewers respect the military’s values and its seal of approval because the armed forces fight and protect the audience. Additionally, the connection to the military gives the illusion that the armed forces support the Wounded Warrior Project; however, the United States military is an expert during combat and has no authority for the treatment of seriously injured veterans.
Today, after going through the information revolution, the United States are planning or framing up ‘New World Order’ that is based on the three points that one is the military power which centered nuclear weapons in it, and second is holding dollars as a key currency, and also third is the occupation of English language as a computer language and common words. E.W. Said just commented about this point in his book ‘Culture and imperialism’ that after the Cold War it seems that in the ‘New World Order’ suggested by the United States government, with self-admiration, a victory declaration for show and a sense of responsibility exaggerated, most of rhetoric were preoccupied by a person’s words of Conrad described.
In a desperate attempt for peace, as ironic as it may be, we create chaos, resulting in the death of millions at a time. Firearms burn bright in the dim sun, exposing the vibrancy of blood-stained suits. As the bullets penetrate skin, the life of another innocent individual has already been lost. Families never to hear a last, “I love you” before their loved one tragically passes in a loud, chaotic mess. They run towards the danger, knowing exactly what result the soldiers might have gotten in the gamble of life or death.
For many years, there has been a lot of controversy centering on the rate at which crime and violence is happening in society. Steven Pinker, the author of “Violence Vanquished” states, “We believe our world is riddled with terror and war, but we may be living in the most peaceable era in the human existence.” This quote from the article proves to many people that our world isn’t as bad as it is made out to be. In the article “Violence Vanquished” Pinker uses Logos, and an argument of fact to support the article 's central message which stands to prove violence is at an all-time low in today’s society.
Many people when they hear the words “Fourth of July” they think about fireworks, cookouts, and sparklers! During the 1850’s it is a day that reminded many of the horrors and injustices in the world. On July 4, 1852 Frederick Douglass, a former American slave and an abolitionist leader, spoke in Rochester, New York about the affectation of celebrating independence. In his speech, “The Hypocrisy of American Slavery” he claims celebrating independence when there are slaves widespread is unethical. To convince the reader of his claim he uses rhetorical questions, word choice and anthesis in hopes to shed light and spark action on the wrongful situation.
Vaclav Havel wrote his essay “The power of the powerless” as a description and critique of the totalitarian communist government and its system. He states that Communism is different to the other types of dictatorship as it is alike a “secularized religion” rather than the usual dictatorship, which do not have any social of historical background and come to power just by the military power. He also described how the individuals are responsible for getting under the autocratic regime due to their agreement to live in a society of consumers, where the supplier is the government, expecting everyone to go with the strict order of life. In case those individuals decide to participate in that and “live within a lie”, they are bounded with the communism.
“Honey, you are changing that boy’s life.” A friend of Leigh Anne’s exclaimed. Leigh Anne grinned and said, “No, he’s changing mine.” This exchange of words comes from the film trailer of an award-winning film, The Blind Side, directed by John Lee Hancock, released on November 20th, 2009. This film puts emphasis on a homeless, black teen, Michael Oher, who has had no stability or support in his life thus far.
War is a harsh reality that is inflicted upon the unwilling through the “need” of it’s predecessors and those whom wish it. All Quiet on The Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque is about 19 year old Paul and his friends in the “Second Company”. Even though they are just out of school age, they have already seen things that many could not bear to even think about. Eventually, all of his friends die, and even Paul too, dies. Remarque uses diction and syntax as literary devices to express his anti-war theme, or lesson.
In The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Maya Lin employs rhetorical devices in order to elucidate, the gross cost of the Vietnam Conflict in U.S. lives. The minimalist design used in the Vietnam Veterans Memorial emphasizes the overwhelming amount of human lives lost. On the Wall, a small diamond is depicted next to the names of people confirmed dead, if a person is MIA(Missing in Action) they get a small cross next to their name. The cross can easily be carved into a diamond if the person is confirmed dead ,or turned into a circle, a symbol of life, if they are found alive.
According to the Center of Disease Control (CDC), 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men will be a victim of sexual assault in their lifetime. The cases of sexual assault in the Army continues to escalate at an alarming rate, forcing leadership to educate Soldiers of the devastating effects it has on the military as a whole. While the Army is working diligently with military leaders and civilian agencies to implement in-house training to educate service members, the number of sexual assaults continue to rise, affecting the level of morale, and breaking the trust level of the victims and all individuals involved. (Reviewing the facilitator’s notes and advice on my initial thesis statement and outline, I had to re-write the thesis statement as the initial one did not address the W’s very well. As a
Critical Review Military Fraud: The Myth of Automatic Virtue The short story by Steve Gillman was written on the bases of his personal beliefs on the praises military received from just by joining. He starts the essay with a short paragraph saying “It is about cultural mythology that has been created in the United States, which makes all soldiers into “heroes” (Gillman 679). The most important part of this quote was that by reading it the readers would understood that he was clearly against that all soldiers where no heroes.
Rhetorical Essay Analysis World War II is a time of great struggle for humanity, especially for those within the midst of the battlegrounds. During the June of 1940 in an attempt to boost his citizen’s morale and confidence, Winston Churchill, then Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (UK), gave his speech “We shall fight on the beaches” at the British House of Commons. The rhetorical purpose of this speech is to convince the people of the UK that they have a fighting chance against the Axis forces, even if the worst comes to show. In order to gain people’s support, Churchill employed the rhetorical strategies of historical evidence and emotional appeal.
In Chamberlain's speech, "Why we Fight," Chamberlain utilized many rhetorical devices but pathos is the most powerful appeal due to the fact that it reminded the mutineers of the pride, hope, and fear of join the army into war. The mutineers who are exhausted are wanting to give up the fight because they did not see the possibility of winning the war. Chamberlain reminded the people of what they did so far and brings out their pride through his statement believing that, "we are an army out to set others free (Chamberlain 11). " Chamberlain's description of the army that the mutineers were in made them feel their importance in forming a free country. This becomes a moral boost which makes them truly believe that joining the army for a greater
