After completing my junior research paper last school year I began thinking about what I would want to focus on for my senior project. I had written my paper on becoming an elementary school teacher, so I knew for my project I wanted to do something that gave me the opportunity to give back to my community. With the desires of some day becoming an elementary teacher, I decided to base my project around early education. After being informed about The Discovery Corner in Phoenix Oregon by my former English teacher, I applied and soon met my mentor Lynn DeHaven. The Discovery Corner is a daycare/ preschool which serves for children starting at 10 months all the way to 6 years old. Lynn has worked with this institution for a few years and serves as an instructor for various age groups. After discussing my interests with my mentor we decided my work there would consist of one on one interactions with the children, and basic instructor training. During my first session at the center, I and Lynn spent our time discussing the program, the services offered for families, and the basic key …show more content…
At the time last summer I was working two jobs and also balancing my project hours on top of it all, so I had to be up as early as possible to get an hour to two hours of volunteering done then head over to one of my shifts. This was all very exhausting and at times my work schedule didn 't work with the days I was supposed to be at the daycare and so it became me having to miss some days to go work. Contacting Lynn sometimes was a bit difficult because of her busy schedule, so that definitely added to my worry. With time I knew these challenges would lead me to become a more responsible young woman, with the capability of balancing my responsibilities. Eventually, I was able to find a healthy balance between the three as my project
Actually, this was a very successful year with my students. As I mentioned before, I was a mentor to Amy Fitzanko. This was not the first time I mentored a new teacher, but this year was different. Amy was to co-teach with the special education teacher for most of the day and it was not going well.
A second paid opportunity I have had serving children has been working as summer camp counselor for the past three summers. Each summer since May 2013, Warren W. Willis United Methodist Summer Camp has provided me with the opportunity to mentor a wide variety of children ranging in ages from rising fourth grade to newly graduated high school seniors. Here I have taken on many roles of mentor, advocate, listener, friend, small group leader, activities facilitator, etc. Here I have interacted with children and adolescents of all backgrounds and cultures.

During my last year of high school there is an additional project I must complete, but unlike most of the projects I’ve done at New Tech, this one must be completed on my own. Doing a senior project helps develop independence and creativity, and helps students like me explore any variety of topics that they wish they knew more about. For my senior project, I am going to go on a backpacking trip. I want to gain a connection to nature and sustain myself in a way that I can’t do here in the frontcountry. Until a few years ago, I had never gone on a backpacking trip or overnight.

Whether it’s babysitting, volunteering with children, or spending time with my three younger siblings, I have had a lot of experience working with children. I began my babysitting experience with my siblings, then family friends and neighbors. But, my best and favorite customers have been my parents that frequently have me care for my two sisters (ages 10 and 3) and brother (age 7) and we enjoy playing games, reading stories, and making art and crafts; also, I help them do homework, feed them meals and put them to sleep. Having younger siblings, I’ve truly grown to love working with children, and especially teaching them. At school, I am the vice-president of our Kids in Science and Engineering club, which is dedicated to spreading passion and knowledge of science and engineering to elementary school students.
As a Teaching assistant, at the university is Saskatchewan I effectively assessed the research proposals of more than 100 students. Each proposal was assessed using guidelines such as class curriculum requirements and the principles of research – such as a clearly stated thesis statement, a clearly defined research question, a representative sample, appropriate method of data collection and analysis, amongst others. The child I interviewed is a six years old boy by the name of Tyrese, and he is currently in the first grade. Tyrese first began school in kindergarten, he has no prior formal schooling; however, his mother tried to teach him the basics at home. Being that she is an early educator, she was always seeking information on how she can assist Tyrese at home in order to prepare him for kindergarten. Tyrese is an active, smart and persistent child and he always demonstrated a positive approach to learning. It came as no surprise to me when I told him that I was coming to his house to have complete some math problems, he was ecstatic.

“Community is about much more than belonging to something; it’s about doing something together that makes belonging matter” –Brian Solis. Online social communities and blogs have become the rage of developing friendship and finding a sense of meaning in the busy world of life. Project Inspired is a blog for teen girls that is aimed to help young women be a person of voice and confidence with Christian values. Project Inspired does an excellent job at making their website appeal to the group of young teen girls and gives them a sense of community by giving them life advice, a place to reach out and talk to other girls, a design that appeals to the eye, and advertisements back what the company is talking about. Project Inspired has done a great job at reaching out to teen girls and showing them Christ love.
For my observation this semester I am working with Riley , a student at a local Early Childhood Center . She is a 3 and one month old girl who lives in the suburbs of Philadelphia and goes to a child care center in an area outside Philadelphia. She has been attending the early childhood center since she was a few months old and has a sibling who attends, too. At her school now she is in the late 2 year old or toddlers classroom for which she is the one of the oldest in her classroom, but will stay there until January. From what I got from her in my conversations, she lives with her mother, father and older sister and is taken to school daily by her grandma or “Nanna” with her sister.
Through this service learning experience, I have learned a lot about developing children and how to apply my learning from N1I02 and N1J02 in terms of developmental considerations to help develop trust with my students and build relationships. The skill that I feel was developed the most through this placement was communication. I have always been above average with my communication skills, however, that was with people my own age, or with people who were older than me. I have not had as much experience communicating with people who are significantly younger than I am. It requires a different approach, and the ability to develop trust with the person before you can communicate effectively with them.
