Image a pretty, blonde haired, college girl who isn’t the smartest, and a college guy who drinks too much and wears Sperrys with a Vineyard Vines shirt. Did you imagine these people and associate them with a particular group found on college campuses? Sometimes these stereotypes and and many other stigmas are associated with people in Greek Life. However, ASU’s Panhellenic Association (PHA) holds the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) sororities on this campus to a higher standard, and the actions of these sororities shed light on some of the false stereotypes associated with them. The PHA is the governing board of the 12 NPC sororities and two associate member sororities on ASU’s campus. A 13th chapter, Alpha Omicron Pi, will join the …show more content…
While arguably many others would agree that sorority women are dumb and uncultured, ASU sororities have benefited members academically. According to the ASU Fraternity & Sorority Life 2015-2016 Annual Report, as of Spring 2016, ASU sororities had an average GPA of 3.31, which is greater than the all-female GPA of 3.15 on ASU’s campus. In order to say in good standing with their chapter, members must maintain a certain GPA throughout the academic year. Emily Carney, PHA president and member of Pi Beta Phi, said the NPC does not regulate the grades of individual fraternities and each chapter on ASU’s campus has a different GPA regulation, which they set for themselves. 00 “We take [academics] into a huge account, essentially, if you don’t meet our guidelines then we don’t really allow for membership past that point,” Kristen Holcombe, Kappa Kappa Gamma president, said. “Because the grade portion of it is something that’s really important to us and we don’t want to take risks on letting members in who don’t value academics the same way the rest of us
In contrast, the rhetorical strategies used by Lisa Byers displays a nice phenomenon about Fraternities, the credibility of this writer was respected due to the interviewing of many of the fraternity members to know why they are doing this. According to the article that shows how frats are trying to help the local community, one of the member says “As a fraternity and an organization on campus it is part of our ideals and founding beliefs that we should be helping the community,” said Allegheny sophomore John Kauffman, a member of Phi Kappa Psi. This proves that not all fraternities are bad for the community and this perspective is showing that some members care about the development and improvement of their university even though many people
In the article “Death at a Penn State Fraternity” by Caitlin Flanagan, the tragic story of Beta Theta Pi pledge Timothy Piazza’s last moments are recounted in great detail. Throughout the analysis of the situation, Flanagan subjects her audience to a substantial amount of heartbreaking details, as well as her opinion and speculation. Flanagan’s purpose in her writing of this article is to display the message that fraternity hazing is apart of a much greater problem in the fraternal system. She does this in a number of ways, including her interviews with other frat brothers such as Kordel Davis, and her stringent analyzation of Greek Life as a whole. What happened to Tim Piazza is in no way okay.
Selectiveness is not a major concern because as long as one keeps a grade-point average of a 3.8, admission will be granted. Lastly, other organizations might mention the attitude of the members. According to Bentley University, entering into organizations will help one find out about themselves: and this “self-awareness will be beneficial in your future career.” Members are required to show respect and have leadership skills in all situations to successfully accomplish this

Theta Chi Fraternity is a social fraternity focused on providing its members with a fulfilling collegiate experience that also prepares them for successful lives after graduation. As the scholarship chair for the Gamma Chi Chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity, I was responsible for the academic success of the chapter. To accomplish this goal, I developed a scholarship program for fostering GPA increases in our membership. Additionally, I monitored the academic success of each brother and worked with individuals to improve their academic
All around the country there are hundreds of Greek organizations spread among college campuses. For some college students it may be the ultimate college dream to join a fraternity or sorority. In movies like “Neighbors” and “House Bunny” fraternity and sorority life in college is typically portrayed as the stereotype of being one big party all the time. Through social media outsiders may see joining a fraternity or sorority as a way of “buying” your friendships. Some may even have a fear of Greek life from hearing of hazing incidents and deaths.
I am writing this letter to express my interest in your illustrious organization, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. I am currently a senior majoring in Criminal Justice, minoring in African American Studies with aspirations of becoming a Social Justice Attorney. Born in the inner city of New York and being raised in the suburbs of Atlanta, I am not your typical Southern Belle or City girl. I like to think of myself as being a fine mix of the two. At a young age my mother groomed me into what she believed a well-rounded lady should be.
The first notable member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated that really sticks out to me is Umzae George Washington Carver. He was initiated in the Gamma Chapter in the year of 1918. To begin I selected him, because he was a very familiar name. I remember learning about Umzae George Washington Carver in the elementary and middle school. With creating over 100 different uses for the peanut, soybean, and sweat potato he was a very prominent African American man in the 1920s.
“Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise, I rise, I rise.,” to become a Delta Woman. When asked to express why I should be awarded the honor & pleasure of being apart this great sorority; I must admit I was a bit overwhelmed but also very humbled. However, I am reminded of the great women Delta Sigma Theta has helped mold some of the most influential women in the world. I want to be apart of the most illustrious sorority organization.
“The chief significance of Alpha Phi Alpha lies in its purpose to stimulate, develop, and cement an intelligent, trained leadership in the unending fight for freedom, equality, and fraternity. Our task is endless.” Jewel Henry Arthur Callis. Since its founding Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity has remained loyal to its ideal of providing advocacy for its community.
This house inhabits thousands of different personalities and each year, new ones are added. This year marks the 130 year anniversary of success at the University of Nebraska, which means there have been 130 different pledge classes and endless memories. However, Delta Gamma was not an instant success, this house stands here today thanks to George Banta, who was Delta Gamma’s only mail initiate, he was actually a member of Phi Delta Theta, he worked towards making Delta Gamma a true sorority for women, which was unheard of at the time. There were solely only fraternities on campuses around the United
These presentations will be reflected in the chapter meeting minutes. • The new member program is crucial to building a strong membership and future leaders in the chapter. The program must adhere to the guidelines listed in the New Member Experience Guidebook and must follow all Fraternity policies and Panhellenic policies. The New Member Chairman will educate the chapter about those policies and will reinforce the fact that men and alcohol have no place in the new member program.
Explain your interest in joining Phi Delta Epsilon-MA Alpha Chapter. * I want to join Phi Delta Epsilon because it would provide me the chance to build lifelong connections and gain networking opportunities. Most importantly, I see myself forming a bond with other members, studying and sharing memories of what it’s like to be a premedical student at UMass Boston. The ability to connect, strive for success and learning from others with the same goal to attend medical school is what I’m truly seeking as a hopeful applicant of PhiDE. Joining the fraternity is the beginning phase of my strenuous road to become a successful physician.
College students are generally categorized with a large amount of stereotypes and misconceptions. College students are often being misunderstood on who they actually are and what they do. Today, it is difficult for people to express themselves in the real world due to stereotypes and misconceptions. Some people do not know what a stereotype or misconception is.
Studies show that members of Greek-letter organizations receive more emotional support than nonmembers. It’s vital to harness that unique connection to enhance membership development and build the critical component of resilience in an organization.
