Through this graphic novel, Marjane Satrapi shows Iran through her eyes as a young girl and as a young woman in two separate periods of her life. Her life as a young girl is engulfed as a revolution wages on through her streets. Marjane Satrapi experiences a wide range of life experiences and situational hazards. In Iran she bought punk CDs and partied as kids her age blew themselves up as suicide bombers promised paradise in the afterlife, which shows the different life she leads in comparison with other kids. (1-3/132, 1-2/102) She grows up in a more Westernized household than any of her friends. Her dad wears a tie, drinks alcohol and they are even richer than most others, with their Cadillac and maid. As a little girl she even attends a French school, until at the age of ten years old that school is closed down and she is forced to attend a public school that teaches what the government wants the children of Iran to believe. Even a young girl such as Marjane is fascinated with things outside her own countries. Punk is a huge influence on her life and not only symbolizes her inherent need to rebel, against those that demanded her to live a life under their boots, (i.e. her oppressors), but it also shows that Marjane is an open minded, risk taker and ready for new experiences much like the times she puts herself on the line to enjoy the products of another …show more content…
Just barely a teenager at fourteen, her family, herself included, decides that it is best if she leaves the country due to the escalating tensions rising among her people without an end in sight. (Satrapi 1-4/148) Once Satrapi departs from Iran, like many of her friends and her family before her, she lands in Austria where she experiences a completely different culture from that of Iran. In Austria, Satrapi finds this new country to be more laid back when addressing rules that regard to personal freedoms or religious decisions. (4/182) Sex is a casual occurrence in Austria and women are not restrained by the rules of heterosexxual men, as was common in Iran during Satrapi’s childhood. Homophobia is also less common in Austria, as made clear by Momo’s affectionate pecks on the lips in comparison with the violence one guard displayed when one of Marjane’s old acquaintances joked around about how he was going out to make out with his male friend who was currently riding shotgun at the time. There is an established thought that every person must be an active participant in their life, and this is done by making choices; however, it is accepting responsibility that controls our lives and the people around us. Marjane Satrapi is an outspoken female, who is not afraid to stand up for something she believes in. As she grew up, Islamic Fundamentalists created strict moral and dress codes for the people of Iran. As a woman, she was forced to wear a hijab in a certain manner. At the time, Marjane was studying at an art school.
Change is one of the only elements in life that will forever remain constant and gradual, yet utterly spontaneous. A time in one’s life that change is prominent is during childhood: ideas are flourishing, creativity is at its peak, and there is often a feeling of invincibility. Unfortunately, as one begins to grow up, there comes a day when all of this will change. For some, that day comes too soon. The graphic novel Persepolis follows one young girl 's journey through this dramatic change in character and mentality.
Importance of religion in Iran and its society is a crucial point in this graphic novel, Persepolis: A Story of a Childhood. It was mentioned in the novel how the society was corrupted when the Shah took charge. When the Shah took over, this lead to the many rebellions and demonstrations Iran had in order to keep the peoples freedom. The significance of women and how they were treated was also affected when everything changed during the 1980’s. Women are treated not only like trophy wives but they also did not have any sort of freedom for themselves.

It is important to realize that the two of you are going to have different perspectives because you are at different ages and the two of you have different interests. As a matter of fact, Marjane Satrapi’s perspective as a child is different from when she gets older because of her loss of innocence, her political and social awareness, and her views on religion. At the beginning of Persepolis, Marjane is around the age of ten. By the end of the story, Marjane is around the age of fourteen.
The Meaning of Satrapi’s Suicide Attempts in Persepolis Marjane grew up in a place where her ideas did not conform to the laws practices, or society as a whole. After a short amount of time in her youth, she realized that she couldn’t find or even be who she was born to be, giving her several struggles growing up and many identity problems. In Iran, the Islamic fundamentalist were in power, and their rule was extremely strict; the last thing they wanted was women and minorities to rise against the power, so her feelings had to be suppressed in order to survive. After years of being shamed and hidden by the law, she fell in to deep depression, realizing that she did not want to live this way. Her suicide attempts come into play at this point, and you realize how badly oppression and identity struggles can affect a person.
The story begins with the life of marjane and ends with her life. But in the background, the novel involves the war in Iran. Iran is always at war which includes the Iranian revolution and the struggle of people after the revolution. Though these are not implied does not affect their significance. They have a very important function of shaping the actions of the characters of novel which have long lasting effects.

The role of politics in Marjane Satrapi 's life is a critical one, as seen in her graphic novel Persepolis, which narrates her experiences as a young girl raised by revolutionaries during turbulent times in Iran. Particularly, Satrapi uses juxtaposition between her parents and children to highlight the hypocrisy and myopia of the upper class revolutionaries when it comes to the interpretation and implementation of their political ideology. Satrapi builds the foundation of her criticism through the superficial comprehension her child self exhibits regarding her parents '—and, by extension, upper class communists '—ideals, then warns about the dangers that such lack of understanding presents through child soldiers who are fed ideologies and then sent to war. However, while pointing out the shortcomings of the movement, Satrapi 's use of children as the vessels for comparison entails that there is room for the communist community to develop, like Marji does as she matures from child to teen, and encourage equality through the removal of social barriers created through binaristic thinking to truly promote communist ideals. The first point of juxtaposition is Marji herself, particularly her initial myopic thinking as a child.

Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel Persepolis, presents the central tension of Marjane struggling with the relationship of her nationality and herself by seeing the transition of clothing, makeup and accessories that female characters wear in the book. During her teenage years, she had been to a lot of countries and she always felt like she couldn 't find her real identity, either as a westerner or an Iranian. The book presents a lot of struggles with her trying to figure out her relationship, nationality, and her identity.
Often, comic books get read at surface level and the reader only sees the image and words surrounding it, but there is much more to many of these graphic novels. Behind the pattern of images, dialogue, and captions, there is depth to the stories. By looking closer and analyzing each page, panel, and image, themes and symbols are discovered. Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis is just one example of a graphic novel with a deeper meaning hidden inside of the black and white pages. At first glance, the novel seems to be a simple story about a young girl that grows up during the revolution in Iran in 1979, but there is much more.
After the Iranian Revolution, it became compulsory for women to wear the veil as the Islamic dress code and all women were removed from government positions, leading to increasing oppression and inequality in Iran. The use of black and white on the first page of the book creates a very clear image that a lot of people are unhappy with the new rules that are introduced by the government. The use of images shows us the oppression of freedom in a way that it would be hard to imagine with words. The first panel shows Marjane in a somber mood, crossing her arms to show her defensive thinking against the veil and the world. In the following panel, the girl’s expressions range from neutral to dislike or discomfort, which shows the general thoughts from people on how they think of the veil.
Effects on the Memoir Persepolis Marjane Satrapi’s novel Persepolis describes experiences during the Islamic Regime that leave people suffering, dying, and fighting for a better government. Marjane Satrapi uses a comic layout to illustrate what is difficult to say in words. Her panel design depicts images of her, her family, and friends as well as how people in the community are reacting to the different events of the revolution. The use of panel design assists the memoir by making Satrapi’s purpose of portraying information more successful. Throughout the novel Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi uses panel design to advance the reader 's’ knowledge of the many situations occurring in Iran that cause distress to many individuals rebelling against the regime.
She knew that it wasn’t all perfect and good but she also knew that it was not a cesspool of despair and darkness that some people make it out to be. So, she wrote the novel in a very smart way, she uses literary devices to show and tell a fantastic story but at the same time uses it as a way to talk about the problems and good things about Iran in the 1970s. This allows Persepolis to live longer and be discussed much longer if she simply didn’t use metaphors. It is also a way to show and teach people about a very heated subject and show them not everything is totally black and white in this world and that sometimes the monsters are actually men but at the very same time people can be great, people can work together to further a cause, people can care and at the end of the day people in Iran are exactly that, people and Marjane Satrapi simply wanted to show that in her novel and she succeeded
