Time, something no one wants to waste because everyone only has a limited amount, some people even less than others. The Odyssey is a great epic about a man and his long journey home after the Trojan War and all of the hiccups he experiences on the way home. Another story dealing with time sensitivity is A Monster Calls. This story entails a young boy and his struggle to deal with his monster, his mother 's illness, and the little time he has left with her. Both stories have similar themes that are interpreted very differently. That time is precious and when one wastes that time, there are certain consequences. In The Odyssey, Odysseus makes many stops on his journey home, delaying his trip even further. Homer tries to make Odysseus out to be some hero, but on his mind set is throughout the book is that he can do anything he wants. Even if his actions do hurt other he still will not have any repercussions. One of the only times in the epic that Odysseus actually shows his dejected state is when he 's cries on Calypso 's Island during the day and sleeps with her during the night. A quote to support this is “Off he sat on a headland weeping, there as a always, wrenching his heart with sobs and groans and anguish, gazing out over the barren sea through blinding tears...But lustrous Calypso shuddered at those words and burst into a flight of indignation. “Hard-hearted you are, you gods! You unrivaled lords of jealousyーscandalized when goddesses sleep with mortals, openly, even when one has made the man her husband.” (The Odyssey, 155-156) The quote aboves shows that Odysseus does show that he is upset with the “events” that have transpired on his journey home. However, it also shows that he chose to sleep with Calypso not thinking of how his actions might affect Penelope or Telemachus. Odysseus knows at this point that he has already been away from Ithaca for quite a long time but he still is not careful about how he uses and misuses his time
According to the story, Odysseus thinks he will be accepted walking in the castle he once lived in but, he has a tough time trying to fit back into society, after being on a journey for 20 years. As the King of Ithaca, he is disrespected by many of the men inside of his own house. In the article, the “Odyssey” many lessons are learned and many obstacles are upon Odysseus and his men.
Even though he was often unfaithful, most of the Greek gods and goddesses still wanted to help Odysseus return to Ithaca . “Athena began, recalling Odysseus to their thoughts,... Think: not one of the people whom he ruled remembers Odysseus now, that godlike man,” (The Odyssey, Book 5, pg 314,lines 5 and 12-13.) Athena was the goddess who advocated for Odysseus and the other divine beings agreed with her. It is important to note that Athena describes him as “godlike,” but she never mentions his lack of sexual fidelity.
Throughout the book, the longer Odysseus is on the sea, the more struggles he has which increases his desire to be home which is explanatory considering how long he’s been away from his family and home. The longer Odysseus was at sea, the more desire he obtained for his wife and his home. Through the Sirens, the cyclops, Poseidon and Zeus trying to punish him, and many other islands that Odysseus journeyed through, it was all a test of his desire and events that taught him about himself that lead to the eventual reunion with
Imagine being apart from your family for over ten years, fighting for your life in a war, and in the many battles and problems you will face on your way home from war. Would you be able to fight a cyclops, pass a dangerous whirlpool and have to face the fact that your crew betrayed you? In the novel The Odyssey written by Homer, Odysseus must do all of these things and more. He has been away from his wife, son and many other family members for over ten years now, fighting for his life on his journey home after fighting in the Trojan war.
In the epic story the Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is returning from the Trojan war, and on his way home he finds many obstacles ahead of him. Odysseus is the ruler of Ithaca and he is trying to return home to his land. Many creatures try and stop him from achieving his goal of returning home, but he and his crew have to push through and get home. Odysseus portrays bravery and courage leading his crew through these tough challenges. Odysseus heroically leads his crew and himself through dangerous obstacles, but also foolishly endangers them during the journey home.

“The Odyssey,” written by Greek poet Homer is an epic tale depicting the brutally enduring quest home of the Greek hero, Odysseus. Within this heroic story, women play a very large and pivotal role in Odysseus’s trip home from the Trojan War. In his attempt to get back to his wife, Penelope, Odysseus’s progress is constantly hindered by the intervention of women who will do anything in order to either convince the heroic figure to stay with them or have him killed. The intentions of the women in the epic are all very different but one of the most prominent roles lies in the seductresses and the alluring women who will deeply influence Odysseus. Most importantly, Penelope plays a large role in portraying the importance of women’s roles in the story.
Odysseus, a man who was known for his adventures, but do we really understand the attributes needed for an epic hero? The King of Ithaca had a very concealed past where it is hardly ever noted that his men were mistreated by their captain and all of Odysseus’ mistakes affected those around him. Odysseus, on several occasions did his men wrong and along his journeys, he became very willful and big headed. In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus has several misfortunes such as losing all of his men and being stranded and not returning home for 20 years, but evidently all of these problems were caused by the mens lack of trust in Odysseus and Odysseus being too stubborn and full of pride. The crew had a very important job in the quests that Odysseus
From the onset of the book, death is a recurring event, persistent throughout the entire poem. In many ways, the Odyssey is the story of the death of all of Odysseus’ friends and fellow fighters during their return home from conquering Troy. These deaths are particularly heartbreaking to Odysseus because, normally, one would expect that all dying would conclude with the end of the war against Troy. In this case, however, the anticipation of his return to his family at home became a series of tragedies. This sequence of events changes his view and molds Odysseus’ character in regard to his surviving friends and family.
The theme of disobedience is very prominent in this episode. The poor choices Odysseus makes as well as his foolish men. In other episodes in the Odyessy like Scylla and Charybdis, The Lotus Eaters, and most episodes’ disobedience was also a problem. In the Sirens and Cyclops episode Odysseus’ men where more obedient when they were in threating situation. If this episode was never told in the book of the Odyssey, the readers would be missing out on how important it is to be obedient and trusting your own instincts.
In the book called The Odyssey by Homer, it mainly follows the story of a king of a village called Ithaca, hundreds of years ago-This man, is named Odysseus. Odysseus goes through many adventures after the victory of the Trojan War. However, this is where Odysseus, is not being as strong as a great war hero and a king as he should be. Although Odysseus was seen as a very strong person, physically and mentally, he lacks the appreciation and the care of his crew throughout the trials and didn’t think through many of his actions thoroughly and how they would affect not only his crew but people around him.

If he truly liked Calypso, he would have decided to stay with her forever, and forget his wife. But, he did not which proves his true loyalty to his wife Penelope.
TS1 (Thesis): In The Odyssey, Homer depicts Odysseus’ real foe as the theme of temptation with displays of hubris and lustrous goddesses, which portrays the importance of being vigilant to not submit to temptation. The main character Odysseus in the Odyssey written by Homer is generally thought to be a great hero; however, he shows more traits of a quite flawed character on closer inspection. Around the beginning of Odysseus’ journey home after the war, Odysseus decides to take a detour to the home of a cyclops deciding to not listen to his men’s suggestions to leave while they still could; consequently, it does not end well: “Ah, how sound that was, Yet I refused. I wished to see the caveman, what he had to offer no pretty sight it turned out, for my friend” (9.130-132). This thought by Odysseus shows that he realized his decision to go to the mysterious island wasn’t the most rational one and that his men’s pleas to leave were the better option, but he decides to be stubborn and place his curiosity before his men’s safety resulting in a non-heroic
After Odysseus’s men's stupidity, greed, and foolishness gets them killed, he learns that others actions and decisions may cause some terrible, long lasting grief.
