With almost half the nation divided among their views, abortion remains one of the most controversial topics in our society. Since Roe v. Wade, our views in society as well as following court cases have been progressing toward the woman’s right to choose. The precedent set by Roe v. Wade made the Supreme Court acknowledge that it cannot rule specifically when life begins and it also affirms that it is the woman’s right to have an abortion under the 14th Amendment. In the 1st Amendment, the Establishment Clause forbids the government from passing laws “which aid one religion, aid all religions, or prefer one religion over another”. Many Christian pro-lifers use their religious beliefs to dispute when life begins.
While these laws helped women in accessing abortion services, other laws were created to put limitations on abortion. Partial-birth abortions, or late-term abortions, were banned by the United States Senate in 1997, but President Bill Clinton vetoed the ban. Instead, he supported a bill that banned late-term abortions except in cases where the mother faced death or serious risk to her health. In 1999, twenty-eight states decided to take matters into their own hands and passed their own laws banning partial-birth abortions, but the state courts ruled that many of the bans were unconstitutional. For instance, the Stenberg v. Carhart case in 2000 overturned the ruling in Nebraska that banned late-term abortions.

In this article, the author talks about abortion and how the last clinic standing is not going down without a fight. Abortion to me is something I believe we should keep because every women is entitled to make their own choice in life. There shouldn’t be a person to tell a women what they can or cannot do with their body. In my opinion some people make mistakes or maybe it was terrible timing, but things do happen. I would rather have the option for someone to go to a clinic rather than hurting themselves for trying to do it with no help.
Abortion is a huge argument in the world today. “In 1973 the U.S. Supreme Court held in Roe V.Wade that the right of privacy protects women’s decisions to end unwanted pregnancy before the fetus develops.” By 2013, 70 restrictions to curb the practice of abortion from 22 states. The conflict over abortion in America has been a major social problem in our nation for decades. During the 1960 's and 70 's with the coinciding civil rights movement and women’s rights movement, abortion became the new national issue that we still see today between two opposing ideologies, grouped into sides coined as pro-life and pro-choice. It is one of the biggest debates over whose morals and beliefs are adequate for our society that make the abortion issue such a controversial and divisive one. Each side believes that their views and beliefs are what we are a society should follow and belief.
Abortion is one of the most controversial topics discussed in our world today. Millions of fetuses never got a chance to be born because a mother chose to abort them. Although I do not believe in abortion, I believe a woman should have the right to decide whether to have a baby or not. Our textbook presents views and arguments on the issues. The article from our text on “A Defense of Abortion” written by Judith Jarvis Thomason states the right to have an abortion should be the pregnant woman’s decision.
An induced abortion is the act of willingly terminating gestational products, executed by medical instruments and/or drugs (Induced). Induced abortions are also defined as the purposeful termination of a pregnancy before the fetus can live on it’s own, without help from the mother (Sherk). A spontaneous abortion is the loss of a pregnancy without outside intervention, whether it is from medicine or medical instruments (Spontaneous). Spontaneous abortions, also known as a miscarriage, are additionally defined as the loss of a fetus caused by naturally occurring events (Miscarriage).
Abortion continues to provoke a big debate whether it is ethical or unethical. Each side provides strong arguments. Let us summarize some of both sides. For most of the liberals, abortion is ethical.
Background There are ongoing debates about abortion and they are very interesting because people come up with different worldviews. For Instance the Christian worldview abortion is forbidden, because it is against the commandments of God. In the postmodern worldview laws which are against or not supporting abortion are not acceptable. People who are against abortion are protecting lives of the unborn babies and the Christian worldview. Those who are for the idea of abortion are protecting women rights to choose and the postmodern worldview.
‘Abortion’ is ending of the pregnancy by removing a fetus or embryo from the womb before it can survive on its own. This can occur either spontaneously or due to human intervention. When an abortion is caused purposely, then it is called an induced abortion. When it happens due to natural causes, it is a spontaneous abortion. Although the term ‘abortion’ implies a premature termination of pregnancy for any reason, the layman better understands the word ‘miscarriage’ for involuntary fetal loss.
