The Revolutionary War, also known as the American Revolution, was a significant event in American History. The rising tensions between the colonies and Britain created a desire for colonists’ independance. The revolution can be described as “...a political upheaval”(1), taking place between 1775 and 1783. In the war, the best of American character was displayed as the colonists prevailed againsts all odds. Rejecting the rule of Britain the colonists overthrew their monarchy to gain independence and founded the United States of America as a democracy. Events such as the Intolerable Acts and the Stamp Act, along with taxation without representation, caused the colonists to break from British control. The relationship between Britain and the thirteen colonies consisted of an ongoing pattern between conflict and support. The Battle of Yorktown would end the war between American and Britain. The battle took place in Yorktown Virginia, beginning on September 28th of 1781 and continued until October 19th 1781. America was lead by George Washington and aided by the French General Rochambeau who were put against British General Lord Cornwallis. The combined army of American and French soldiers arrived in Yorktown on September 28th and started a Siege on British forces. The American troops bombarded the British army, and on October 14th the Continental Army attacked and defeated the last of the British 's remaining defenses. On October 17th, 1781, a British officer waving a white flag signaled a want to discuss terms of surrender. Britain 's surrender solidifies American a independence and The Revolutionary War comes to an end with the Treaty of Paris. The American Revolutionary War was a war fought from 1775-1783, also known as the American War of Independence, between the Kingdom of Great Britain and the thirteen colonies. The colonies wanted independence and free from British rule. In order to gain their independence the colonies had to fight for it.
The army kept Cornwallis and his soldiers from being able to escape by land, while the French Navy had trapped the British ships from escaping by sea. Out of supplies, Cornwallis finally raised the white flag and surrendered to Washington and his troops on October 19, 1781. The Articles of Capitulation gave the land troops of the British to the United States as prisoners of war, and the navy ships to the French. Cornwallis wrote that “The garrisons of York and Gloucester including the officers and seamen of his Britannic Majesty’s ships, as well as other mariners, to surrender themselves prisoners of war to the combined forces of America and France. The land troops to remain prisoners to the United States, the navy to the naval army of his Most Christian Majesty,” in Article I. Washington’s victory over Cornwallis, forcing his surrender, played a crucial role in Washington’s impact on American History.

The French and Colonists were on the same team in the war. Most likely the Colonists and the French made a “V” or a “U” shape as their defensive position on one side of the water.
The American Revolution was a time period where there were 13 colonies in America exploring more of the land everyday, The british shared the land with people who are called the pilgrims and ended up soon turning into Patriots and after that Americans. Great Britain started abusing their colonists while there were shootings and many taxes of colonists, many were unfair, and this led to the revolution. It is words that win wars, and throughout history moments have been defined by speeches, proclamations and documents. They shape political policies, rules and inspire change amongst men, they can start and end wars, rally troops and put the fear of god in men. The American revolution was no exception. During the course of the war many important letters, reports and political bills were written on both sides, giving historians and the general public a better understanding of the events and sufferings that formed a country and shaped democracy as we know it today. One of the most influential of these came from the British, a proclamation made by Thomas Gage on behalf of King George III of England.
There were many influential events in history. I researched each topic thoroughly and picked the one I felt was the most important. The sweet sixteen had many difficult choices to choose between. Between the battles of Yorktown and appomattox I choose the battle of Yorktown.
The Battle of Valley Forge was the turning point of the Revolutionary War. Although no actual military battle was waged here, George Washington’s Continental Army faced some physical and mental battles of their own in this Pennsylvania town. It was here at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania where the Continental Army Soldiers of the Revolutionary War chose to go after being defeated in the Battle of Germantown in October 1777. During this winter, Washington’s troops came to this encampment to recuperate and train for future battles with the British.

All of the acts and taxes the British issued and how overly controlling the British were over the colonists was the starting point, also the increasing rebellions encouraged the colonists to break away from Britain’s rule, and finally the wars that resulted and seizing authority from the British was the final turning point for the colonists in eliminating Britain’s heavy-handed ruling over the colonists. The acts, and taxes that came with most of the acts, that the English imposed on the colonists was a substantial reason the colonists opposed British rule.
