This act required that many documents such as licenses, diplomas, contracts and even playing cards to be printed on embossed paper that had a tax on it. This act was the very first attempt to tax the colonists directly for activities that occurred solely with the colonies themselves. After the French and Indian War the British national debt skyrocketed and the Prime Minister was eager to pay it down before the government was bankrupted. So he decided that it was only fair that the colonist pay for at least a portion of their own defense. The Act called for the taxing of 54 separate items. Under the Stamp Act, anyone accused of not having the proper stamp affixed to an item could be tried in an admiralty court. This was alarming to the colonist because they familiar with the “no taxation without representation”. This Act resulted in a strong unified violent response from the colonists. The colonist issue was not with the tax itself, it was the fact that parliament was trying to tax them with no elected representatives in Parliament. After the citizens came together and wrote to newspapers, destroyed officials homes and violence against stamp distributors, and the merchants forming a non-importation agreement stating they would not buy or sell British manufactured goods until the Stamp Act was repealed, the Act was finally repealed on March 18,

This was technically the first law that made it so that the colonists would pay their taxes straight to England. All printed materials, such as newspapers and playing cards, were taxed. Everyone was quick to come together with the people mostly affected leading them. The same month, the Quartering Act was passed, making it legal for British soldiers to show up at anyone’s home and be allowed entrance.
The colonists had decided that they had enough of Britain and the King being unfair. All of the colonies were unhappy with the fact that they were being taxed without representation in parliament. “Disregarding American protests that the colonies could not be taxed because they were not represented in Parliament, in March 1765 the British government enacted a stamp tax to take effect in the American colonies on November 1, 1765”(Alexander 174). There was no singular event that led to the American Revolution however, there were long-term causes that were brought to the forefront because of short-term events. Many of these long-term causes were tax acts that were being placed on the colonies to help Britain pay debt that was inquired during the war with France. These tax acts included the Sugar Act of 1764, the Quartering Act of 1765, and the Townshend Acts of 1767. These acts required the colonies to pay taxes on coffee, tea, paper, and other item, while at the same time forcing them to feed and house british soldiers (Schultz, 2014 pp. 84-90).
This Act required Taxed Stamps to be placed on printed materials. These stamps had to be purchased using the British sterling coin, which was not prevalent in the colonies. Colonist saw the pitfalls of this act and began to seek equal liberty with British Parliament. Not yet seeking independence, the colonist wanted British leaders to rethink how government worked. Opposition continued to rise as these ideals were rejected by Royal Rule.
The colonists wanted representation when it came down to being taxed, but the British government would not allow it. The government wanted full control over the people, so they made sets of acts and laws that were placed on taxation. For example, the Stamp Acts of 1765. These acts taxed all papers, pamphlets, newspapers, and cards. The Townshend Acts of 1767 were also a large part of taxation.
The colonist believed they weren’t supposed to be taxed without their permission. Due to the lack of representation in Parliament colonist went and protest. Which lead to boycotting British products. In 1766 the act was abolished.

Rejecting the rule of Britain the colonists overthrew their monarchy to gain independence and founded the United States of America as a democracy.
The French and Indian War left England with a debt of £130,000,000. To help pay off the debt Britain set up taxes, to collect money, on frequently used products by the colonists. The Molasses Act put a six pence tax on every gallon of molasses. The colonists thought this was a lot of money to pay so they did everything to avoid it. This act was not really enforced and the colonists did not really obey this act.
