The Scorpio Races is a fiction novel written by Maggie Stiefvater; this book contains both the elements of action and fantasy stories. When the author wrote this story, she was inspired by the legend of water horses: the magical horses that shows up from the sea when it gets closer to November. Those brutal water horses are precisely featured in this novel; hence it gives more excitement and thrill to the readers. Also, throughout this story, the perspective swifts between two main characters – Puck and Sean – in contrast to the typical novels which the story is told by only one person’s point of view. Puck and Sean eventually meets up with each other as the story goes on; the unpredictable development of the scenario before, during, and after their encounter made the story more dramatic. The water horses play a vital role in determining the genre of this novel; water horses are magical yet cruel. They are imaginary creatures; therefore, The Scorpio Races is a fantasy novel. The brutality of the water horses is revealed from page 101 to page 103 of the book – a capaill uisce tore up Jimmy Blackwell’s fingers and attacked Puck and Dove. They might’ve died if Sean didn’t save them using the poisonous berries. Also in Chapter 1, when Puck and Finn encountered a water horse, she said: “water horses love a moving target; they love the chase.” These evidences prove that the water horses are wild and vicious; they killed many people and are extremely hard to tame. Thus, this novel can be categorized as an action novel. Comprising both the elements from two genres increases the number of reader; the book can be read by those who relish reading a fantasy novel and those who enjoy reading an action novel. If The Scorpio Races fell under only one genre, perhaps action, then fewer people would’ve read the

It made it much more interesting as it showed a different and more precise perspective of the things happening around the horse, whether it was the nature or a different character. This made it somewhat confusing at first as no one is really used to reading a book in this narrative as you wouldn’t be quite sure who is referred to; the horse, or its owner, who is also a main character. As you get the hang of reading in this unique narrative, you find it more pleasing as it is different. Doris Pilkington, did not fail in a certain matter, but just didn’t take narrating the story to a new out of the ordinary level. She was simply narrating the girls’ lives in third person, as any other author usually would.
“Under A Cruel Star” despite being an excellent book to read was not credible or believable as compared to Kevin McDermott’s scholarly article. Heda Kovaly depicts popular opinion under Communist dictatorship as being controlled by terror of the government. She states that popular opinion no longer comprised morals or humanity, but instead was uttered by fear and doubts of the consequences of their actions and the domination of the government. This significance of life can be explored and tested against details found in secondary sources. “Under A Cruel Star”, a primary source, provides personal experiences through the political difficulties of Jews while secondary source in Kevin McDermott’s article provides accurate facts of events that
Characters in various novels often have distinct personalities and defining traits to emphasize their role. These defining characteristics might not be as complex as a personality or a chronic mood. Many associated aspects of today’s protagonists and antagonists are the prevalent objects that accompany them. In the book The Scorch Trials the detrimental forces within the book all possess signature items that play very key roles in the storyline.
Prophets and prophecies abound in Western literature. From the ancient texts designed for people of all walks of life— such as Homer’s Odyssey and Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, to more modern works targeted to specific audiences— such as the Harry Potter and Gregor the Underlander series, authors have employed the literary device of prophecies to entice the reader to stay with the story. Instead of telling the reader outright what is going to happen, or how a situation will play out, the author offers a prophecy of some kind to the reader. Such prophecies are generally ambiguous, and often the reader is left confused as to what is actually going to happen. By using this technique, the author piques the interest of the reader yet allows for the
By saying that, “Sometimes when you fall off your horse, you just don’t want to get right back on.” (Smiley 1), the author sets up a scenario where because the girl is scared of getting hurled off of her horse again, she finds comfort in a special horse that she holds near to her heart. Smiley uses the relationship between the girl and her horse to give a reason for why the girl has hope. In present day, the horse had been sold in exchange for money (Smiley 2). The second part of the sentence refers back to her love of the horse which, ultimately, explains her mentality of wanting to try again.
At the beginning of the book, Mrs. Schachter hallucinates images of flames, a sign of a great calamity. While she sees these flames, the situation out and inside the car gets worse. The Jewish people are crammed in a little cattle car and most people are struggling to breath. Outside of the train, the weather starts to turn bad as it starts to get really cold as it begins to snow very heavily. Mrs. Schachter is freaking out because she literally experiences Hell on Earth.
On their journey, they meet people from different walks of life, engage in a decades long feud, and even attend a circus. However, this novel is not all fun and games. Mark Twain blatantly demonstrates his beliefs in
There are clear parallels between the use of fact and fantasy in the authors’ works, however, there are clear contrasting uses as well.
Language is used everyday in lives. We use it to communicate with each other to show how we feel or think. Comfort can drift away from us if we do not have the ability to communicate with others. Barriers can present themselves when trying to communicate inhibiting language. In the short story Out of All Them Bright Stars by Nancy Kress, she puts an alien in a normal dinner and everyone is uncomfortable with his presence there except his waitress.
Hakim Laila’s feminist identity was influenced by her father, Hakim. Hakim is mostly referred to as Babi in the novel. Babi was a high school teacher, in other word, an intellectual. Intelligence is devalued by the majority in their society, therefore being a teacher makes Babi an extraordinary person in the novel. Since Fariba, Laila’s mother, was distanced from her, Laila had a special bond with her father.
Topic 1: Film genres Through the 1995 film “Clueless”, written and directed by Amy Heckerling, the idea that film genres are located in industry and texts and audiences is clearly shown. “Clueless” is an American typical romantic comedy. This film can be seen as a hybrid genre as it include different characteristics of two film genres. In this movie, elements of humour and romance are both illustrated by its generic formulas and story content. The film talked about the heroine Cher goes through her perplexed teenage and finally realizes she is interested in Josh, her stepbrother.
Mix has a very unusual type of body. She has bark-like skin with strange carvings on her. Today I talked about the plot, the setting, and the characters. The plot is about Wull and his magical journey through the Danek River, the setting is the Danek River, and the three main characters are Wull, Tillinghast, and Mix. I would recommend this book to anyone in high school and above reading level, and anyone who likes

The film follows Coraline, an adventurous girl who discovers her idealised world behind a secret door in the house, unaware of the other worlds sinister secrets. The genre found throughout the film correlates with the dark fantasy genre, which is a subgenre of the fantasy genre. It incorporates darker themes of fantasy into the literary, artistic and cinematic works found in fantasy films. Additionally it will most often contain combinations of fantasy with several aspects that can be found in horror films.
conforms to and frustrates what we traditionally expect from the genre. Poe shaped the genre of detective fiction - although he preferred to call them “tales of ratiocination” - after introducing Detective C. Auguste Dupin. Dupin analyses unsolved mysteries and uses his advanced cognitive ability to deduce information to solve cases; thus, a new genre was born. To describe how Poe’s short stories both comply with the general expectations of detective fiction and how they defy them, I plan to examine The Murders in the Rue Morgue and The Purloined Letter.
