No More Block Schedules
Although many more schools are now switching to the block schedule in hope of improving education nationally, there are many reasons why we should keep the traditional schedule to benefit students. The block schedule which is now being used has more disadvantages than people may think. Since the class times are extended it makes paying full attention extremely hard on students letting them become easily distracted. Also, the amount of work covered in one day is much more than in the traditional schedule, making it hard for students to keep up. The 90-minute periods can also be very intimidating causing students to be less likely to give their full attention the whole time. In the article “Block Scheduling: A Solution or a Problem?” by Sharon Cromwell she explains how the increase in time dedicated to each class has the potential to do more harm than good. She engages with the problem that “if active learning doesn't take place during, for example, a 90-minute class period, students may have trouble paying attention for the entire class” (Cromwell 1). Using this example, of having a 90-minute lecture rather than 90 minutes filled with learning could be problematic. There is a significant increase in the amount of time spent in the classroom making it easy for students to lose focus and not retain information. Also, with such long class periods, students often get bored,distracted, and no longer feel like learning any more information. There is only so much time that a student or anyone can stay focused on one topic in the same environment. Another problem with having 90-minute classes is that the students feel no sense of urgency and can be easily distracted by friends and other factors since they don’t feel the need to get all their work done quickly. In the article “The Pros and Cons of Block Schedules” by Malissa Kelly she explains how “If a student misses a day under the block schedule, he is actually missing the equivalent of nearly two days compared to the traditional 50-minute-class schedule” (Kelly 1). This means that if a student misses a week of school with the block schedule for whatever reason, they are missing 2 full weeks of school with the traditional schedule. This is such a problem it has the possibility of making students fail their classes, or fall so far behind they are unable to get a grade that they deserve. The topics they go over in class will never be able to be learned fully if they miss them because they no longer have direct teachings from the educator. This causes them to either seek help from a fellow peer who most likely won't be able to teach it as well, or to learn it themselves through other means such as videos. This is a major problem when it comes to projects as well because they miss the time given in class to complete them, when they have all the available resources required to complete the project. Also, if the projects happen to be group projects, it can affect other students who are left with completing the work of multiple people single-handedly which can result in bad grades that they can't control. The student and teacher both also have to balance in time with their families. Many are opposed to block scheduling. Some would say that block scheduling is not good for the student because it is less subject focused and too much time can be spent between each subject. A student is still required to take all of the core subjects each year of their education. They also are required to have a certain number of credits each year to graduate.
Be it resolved that Rogers High School should adopt a block scheduling system. Block scheduling is a system for middle and high schools by replacing the typical day of six or seven classes that are about 40-50 minutes every day with a schedule of three or four classes that are longer and meet less times a week. Whether it’s because less time is being wasted or the noise and chaos that come with passing time, block schedules benefit both teachers and students alike.
Teachers have reported academic improvements, better attendance, and students that are less moody and less likely to fall asleep in class, and I know you care for each student in the district and want the best for each individual. Currently and historically, crafting a school schedule has been a means by which school leadership has strived to increase student achievement. However, perceptions of the effectiveness of schedules vary significantly. There are many who believe that the schedule is the key to increasing student learning. In this study I will investigate student, teacher, and parent perceptions of scheduling at both SLOHS and MBHS and the effect it may have on student learning. The research setting is discussed below.

Students never have a complete experience except on the installment plan (Gatto, part I, pars 11). I received flashbacks from my childhood, when I knew there could have been additional work to do before the bell rang. I always ended up being swept away into a completely different environment to advance skills in a random field of knowledge. To counter my agreement, the set class times did help in my erudition to what studies I relished more and the areas which I felt were unbearable. This determined my time management based on interests outside of school.
As for the block scheduling method, it organizes a section of the daily schedule into the extended blocks of time in class which gives students more time to complete work than rush through it. The primary idea behind this new scheduling theory was that by redistributing the school day into longer and more manageable Class periods, school curricula on a day-to-day basis would become more in-depth and education skills would increase. The common block schedule format consists of four classes of 90 minutes a day a semester and eight classes over a school year. For example, a big pro is the decrease in a student’s stress and absences. Some cons are that there will be less time to learn and a possible drop in test scores. The school district should give teachers and students a four-day school week as a break. Both teachers and students can quickly get burnt out on going to school and would benefit from getting a break once a week. Most districts hold up on having a four-day week is that there will be a possible drop in test scores, but test scores do not mean as much as people think they do.
Four Day Week Most children all around the world can all agree on one thing, school is awful. Around one-hundred of the country’s, fifteen-thousand school districts currently use the four day school week. Schools should all convert to four day weeks for the following reasons. There are 24 hours in a day, 8 of those hours belong to school. From the moment when a student wakes up, they begin to prepare for school then go to school, most schools start around 8:00-9:00 am, so most students get up 1-2 hours earlier to get ready. Students need at least 8-9 hours of sleep to be able to function. With students having after school activities that take up around 2 hours, students are exhausted and when they get home all the want to do is relax, but some of them have responsibilities that they have to do, which gives them less time to relax from a long day of school. Four-day school weeks have the capability to change student lives. Every school should invest in the four-day school week plan. Implementing this routine would allow teachers more time to teach and give students the option to do their homework during class, in turn creating student success. All of these factors would help to enhance student and faculty life, while promoting success in the classroom. Having a school system run on a four-day rotation would increase their success by offering more opportunities for lesson and work time.

The students will be more organized since they are arranging their own schedules. They can learn how to disciplined themselves. The students could get their degree or finish his or her class faster.
