When I think about the Seven Army Values and the Warrior Ethos so many brave men come to mind. For this paper I’ll be telling you about SPC Kyle White. A United States Soldier who took to heart those seven values and the Warrior Ethos. In any line of work you should always strive for to follow these “guidelines” but I feel that it is especially important in the military and it really is the backbone of how we should do our jobs. They should always be in the back of your mind and with every decision you should be able to say “What I’m doing follows these values.”
In the book A Proper Sense of Honor: Service and Sacrifice in George Washington’s Army by Caroline Cox, the author’s main point is to shed light on and provide examples of the divide between officers and enlisted men in the Continental Army of the American Revolution. The divide was very clear, and was in place in all aspects of their respective lives, the officers being higher on the totem pole, while the enlisted men were decidedly lower. The chapters of this book go into detail about specific aspects that show the division between how officers and enlisted men were treated: punishment, health care, death and burial, and the treatment of prisoners of war. Duty means being able to fulfill tasks as part of the team. Their work is building one task onto another. By the soldiers wearing the United States Army uniform shows their loyalty. The soldiers code for respect is, "Treat others with dignity and respect while expecting others to do the same." To the Army respect is trusting that all people have done their jobs and completed their duty.
The connection between the Army culture and the Army ethic begins with highlighting that the profession of arms is not just an individual mandate but also an institutional one. We cannot expect the Army ethic and culture to resonate among all soldiers unless it is echoed at all echelons across the Army. The culture suggested has different levels which include artifacts, surface level things that can be “seen, heard, and felt”, espoused beliefs and values, or what the Army thinks is important based on doctrine, regulations, and policy, and the basic underlying assumptions. Based on the underlying assumptions, we can then gain functionality by deriving “…major cultural dimensions.” (Army, 2010, p. 10)

The book is in itself a history of the Army, the development of the Army’s tactical doctrine and how the doctrine of the Army has changed over time. The main argument of the book is that the central concepts of the Army were not formed in war but in the long periods of peace in between actual combat. Brian Linn, the author, further argues that the military intellectual elite have over the years created the ‘American Way of War’ instead of the great leaders of the military such as Patton or Eisenhower.
