During the reconstruction, it was the South that had to face the most economic, social, and political problems. The freed slaves had big problems too. The freed slaves could not read or write and were not educated. That made their job opportunities very limited. The only thing these freedmen were good at was manual labor, mainly in farms. They also did not own any clothing other than their slave rags, and did not have any money. The only help that they could turn to were the churches that had been built for blacks only. This was the only good factor, because the church population increased greatly. Eventually the Freedmen's Bureau was established. The Freedmen's Bureau provided food, clothing, and shelter for freed slaves and whites in need. Also, black and white teachers came to the South to teach the freed slaves. The ultimate achievement for the freed slaves was being elected to the government. There were 2 black senators and 14 black representatives. …show more content…
The South had damaged property, loss of wealth, the loss of cotton markets, loss of fertile soil, lack of industry and railroads, and many more. One of the main problems was the loss of slave workers. The only laborers left would be indentured servants, and most of them moved to the West or to the North. This meant that the North had the ability to rebuild faster. The other main problem was the carpetbaggers. These people came to the South looking to trick people into wasting government money. The big weakness was that most blacks couldn't read. This dealt even more damage to the already damaged
The landowners took advantage of their tenants by overcharging for land and underpaying for the crops. The tenants began falling deeper into debt. They could not leave until they paid off their debt, which was nearly impossible. Although former slaves had been freed, they were still facing many struggles in free life. America’s plan for reconstruction had good intent, but did not give African Americans the equality they deserved.
How did Reconstruction change life for African Americans? Before Reconstruction, every African’s life was different. Some Africans worked on plantations, which meant they worked from sunrise to sunset, six days a week. They would even get food that wasn’t capable of being eaten. The plantation slaves lived in small shakes that had a dirt floor and little to no furniture.
There is something I want to share that I was privileged to enjoy these past two weeks. My son and I went to visit our family in Mt. Pleasant and Charleston, SC. We managed to see some of the historical sites from our lessons while we visited. My Aunt Laura is a Charleston native and is now retired from her job as a staff member where she worked at the White House (Democratic) for many years. The best thing about the trip was the visit because the area is so rich in history.
Secondly, slavery was a way of life in the South. They believed that slavery wasn’t wrong and that black people were just animals or products. They traded them and sold them, some even enlisted their slaves in the Civil War.
Without the resources Southern war needs could not be met. Such as clothing, food, and shelter. Also, the south lost their home court advantage when they couldn’t rely on the thousands of African Americans they slaved. They didn’t have nationalism and they lacked full civilian support.
However, the South relied on labor, and with the slavery abolished, they had no one to
The economy and labor division in the South – and in parts of the North – crumbled during the beginning of the Reconstruction Period. Even though it was wrong, slavery was how a lot of the physical labor was accomplished and how goods were created and distributed throughout the country. Since slavery was abolished, there was a chaotic matter of how to keep their economy afloat with a lack of people to accomplish the work. Small farmers were thrown into poverty because of the war and had to instead get in business with the cotton industry. Eventually, new systems of labor were established throughout the country, however, it didn’t help the United States economy at the
Who killed Reconstruction: The North or South? Following the civil war, the south killed the reconstruction of the United States. (Reconstruction was putting the country back together after the Civil War) There are many reasons why, the south slowed down the reconstruction of the United States, the main reason was freedmen were not seen as equals to the white.
If the slaves missed a few days working on the plantation because of illness or what the case maybe that resulted in revenue loss. Whereas the North had many other alternatives to making revenue, such as mills and other manufacturing companies; the South basically depending on slaves to have income and to support their
When reconstruction began, Southern citizens faced destruction to its property and buildings; oftentimes due to burnings of the city; for example, when Richmond was burned down by the Confederates or Petersburg destroyed after the siege. Though the South was able to rise, it was never able to match the economic status of the North. The wartime destruction that occurred was devastated and burned down towns, citizens seeking new ways other than slavery to make money all while trying to adjust to Congress’s
The American dream is described as the “dream of land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity each according to ability or achievement”. In the South, the Reconstruction Era took place officially from 1865-1877. However, events still continued after 1877. As slaves were now free after the civil war, White Northerners, educated Northern Blacks, Newly Freed Slaves, and Yeoman farmers all wanted the same thing–for everyone to be equal. In the Reconstruction Era, African Americans were given many opportunities such as jobs, education, freedom, citizenship and protection of their rights.
The North was sick of being told that they were not protecting blacks in the South and neglected them. The South killed Reconstruction because of their resistance over the North’s help, and their corrupt ideas for reconstructing the
During Reconstruction, there was a group called the K.K.K. who killed color people for fun and they wore mask and pretended to be ghost. Also poverty was still an issue in the south. Industrialization in the South was too slow. Sharecropping and tenant farming were bad because they usually brought more complications like who would get what, and that wasn 't fair to the labors on the land. Taxes were elevated in order to rebuild the South.
The black folk were freed by the abolition of slavery, yet this new freedom was not so. Ther identity was forever fractured between black and American, and even after they internalized the whites’ perspectives of them, they still wanted to be both without the disadvantages and racism. They were degraded, dehumanize, and shamed for their lack of education and job skills. In 1865, the Freemen’s Bureau was established by Congress to provide them with aid after living in slavery and not owning tools, homes, or land.
There was also land available at a cheap price which allowed them to not spend as much. There really wasn 't that much discrimination against the black people. There was a lot of free open land that people were able to build and start a life. They also just wanted to get away from all the destruction of the south and north stuff that was going on.
