During the 1920s women gained a freedom that they had not known before. Women were wearing new and shorter fashion styles (document 4). Before the 1920s women’s fashion included floor length dresses that were usually reworn every day. Wearing the same dress every day was seen as a normality during this time and owning too many dresses could have been considered frivolous. In the 1920s however many women owned multiple dresses that they did not have to wear every day or even week.

This paper is mainly about the consumption behavior of America’s majority population during the 1920s, namely its white majority citizens of European ancestry. Of course, it’s necessary to acknowledge that the country’s minority African-Americans, Latinos, Asians and people of various other backgrounds developed their own versions of consumerism during the 1920s as well. As for the European-Americans, they were targeted as consumers by producers of consumer goods. Women were targeted mainly by companies that made cosmetics, beauty, and personal hygiene items (many in number); clothes; kitchen appliances (a huge category of items, most of them being electrical); furniture; electric vacuum cleaners, home cleaning materials (also large in number),
In this essay I’m going to talk about how fashion developed and changed through the 1900s till the 1930s. The setting of these three decades it’s quite turbulent since the world had passed through the First World War and the start of the Second World War, the great depression, the rise of the suffrage, etc. 1900s In the 1900s women’s fashion was still very conservative and formal; long skirts, long sleeves, hair up and tightly corseted torso. Women of this age could wear pants, but they weren’t as popular and used in this decade they were all about skirts and dresses. During these years the rich and privileged were probably the only ones to afford the best clothing made with the most expensive and fancy fabrics with the most beautiful but costly accessories.
“The visionary immigrants who transformed denim and small pieces of metal into the most popular clothing product in the world probably never imagined how famous they would become. Indeed, no other clothing product has been identified more with American culture, especially the American West” . The official birth of jeans is 1871, but they were patented on May 20, 1873. Although the original use of Jeans was not intended for casual use the famous “blue jeans” made a hit and are still used
The 1920s were marked by an increase in consumerism due to a booming economy post-World War I (CrashCourse, 2013), the increasing popularity of consumer debt (CrashCourse, 2013) and an increase in the mass production of consumer goods (Osburn, n.d.). Coupled with technological advances, families now had access to mass media (in the form of the radio and television) and modern conveniences, such as household appliances and automobiles. Radio and television broadcasts helped to build a mass culture, where consumers were watching, listening, purchasing and emulating the same things across the nation (Osburn, n.d.). Women’s suffrage granted women the right to vote; some women took this new found voting freedom as license to break from traditional female roles in other areas and began dressing and

The owner Mickey Drexler started up the company as a door to door sales of women’s clothing (Strickland, 2014, Pg. 510). Over time Drexler changed the name to J. Crew to attract a more “Preppy, affluent consumer’s attention (Strickland, 2014, Pg. 510). Their goal was and still is to be a forefront of fashion and deliver exactly what consumers desired (Strickland, 2014, Pg. 515).
In the 1920’s, America reached its highest standard of living. American citizens were making more money, working less, spending more time on leisure activities, and buying expensive items, such as cars. A middle class America was developing, suburbs were constructed, and the new workweek was shortened to five days a week. Despite this boom of prosperity, the changes in America from 1920 to 1945 were primarily detrimental. The United States began the 20th century on excess, but this excess eventually overflowed and left America high and dry.
Some of the American citizens were very quick to judge flappers, but in reality they were only indulging in fun activities that American men had been involved with for ages (DiPaolo). Even though the flapper was a very popular icon for the women in the 20s, most of the time the average woman couldn’t afford to dress and act in the ways that flappers did. The lifestyle was far too expensive and took up most of one’s free time. However, the fashion didn’t go unnoticed and was eventually integrated into clothing that could be purchased at all income levels (“Women in the 1920s”). The rise of the flapper blew up and made quite the
