The book Long Way Down is decorated with fourteen awards from all different sources. Will is a 15 year old boy living in an urban area. His brother Shawn is shot and killed causing Will to seek revenge. While in an elevator on the way to kill his brother's killer, Will starts interacting with dead people. In Long Way Down, Will's community uses the rules to influence character decisions. The rules in Will’s community heavily influence the decisions that Will and others make, with rule #1 being no crying. Will thought, “NO.1: Crying Don’t. No matter what. Don’t.”(Reynolds 31). Will follows the rule of no crying strictly along with the rest of the men and boys in the community. This leads to crying being frowned upon and rare. Will then talks about an interaction with his father where he says, “Eye to eye, a tear streaming down his face. Just one so it ain’t really count.”(Reynolds 225). Even in an emotional situation between Will and his father, only one tear gets shed. This is a result of being told and almost trained not to cry from a young age. Although crying happens rarely, the …show more content…
Will thought, “NO.2: SNITCHING Don’t. No Matter what. Don’t.”.(Reynolds 32). Snitching could save lives but is extremely frowned upon by the community, so the decision is taken away. This leaves the only decision left to keep quiet, unless rule three is followed. After Shawn is shot Will say’s, “In case you ain’t know, gunshots make everybody deaf and blind especially when they make somebody dead.(Reynolds 19). Will makes the claim that everyone follows this rule showing the community made this decision together. The power the community has over each other's decisions is shown greatly when dead people's loved ones will not snitch on their killers. The rule of no snitching has great control over the entire community's decisions as they all appear to follow
Leahanne said Isiah did not cry but he had a shocked look on his face. Leahanne stated it was just her and Andi in the classroom
Much like Emma Jean Gus was neglected and abused by his parent in this case his father. As a child Gus’s father tells him that, “tears didn’t speak well for one who would, one day,
This shows that it is ok for boys to cry, but it isn’t ok in society to cry. It could be detrimental to the boy’s success because it shows that he’s weak according to
The next day the priest has set up an escape for them by a friends’ plane. Rebels find them again and they nearly escape the rebels. They fly to Brazil and their wounds are tended to and planes are booked to go home. Will becomes unafraid of death and his situation of the possibility of his parents fighting and divorce. I really enjoyed this book due to the suspense and action.
Since he's seen someone almost die because of the carousel, the thought of someone he loves being harmed by it really upset him. The last instance in which Will displayed a fearful tone was when Mr. Dark tried to cover up Mr. Cooger’s obvious trips around the carousel, “…Will trembled…”(110) Will is showing a fearful tone by “…trembling…” since that is an action one performs when they are overtaken by fright. Will has a fearful tone in the situation because he was responsible for the extreme aging of Mr. Cooger and he understands that the freaks are going to have a vendetta against him since he caused harm to one of

Will is trying to follow these rules, but he runs into problems when people give him reasons not to. Mikey Holloman (dad) has the biggest impact with stating important things; for example, he makes Will question if he has the right person; what if someone comes for him after killing this guy? Will he be able to handle it? Mikey also uses his own experience for getting revenge for his brother’s murder; he tells Will how he was 100% sure he had the right person but ended up killing an innocent person. They
He followed Jim to the carnival even though he didn’t want to. Will tried to tell Jim to put the lightning rod on his house, but he didn’t have the courage to tell him a second time. William was also terrified to tell his dad what was going on with the carnival and Mr. Dark. In the middle of the book, Will was still scared and played in the background, but he started to speak up for
Will Shawn’s experiences and guidance help Will, or will it lead him astray? The first reason why Shawn has the biggest impact on Will is because he’s an older brother/father figure to Will. For example, a quote in the book states “ Shawn was my big brother, my best friend, my protector. He was the only one who always looked out for me, no matter what” (Reynolds, 21).
‘It’s not worth it’” (32). In the following scene, Will acts repulsively towards Mrs. Smythe, while he talks about what they could be doing right now. We can see how a sense of yearning envelopes him, nevertheless he can’t help but deny
Will’s dad had grown up on rules and in those rules the way you show respect and the only way to show the hurt you feel is by killing the killer; except, he
Will at the start of the story wanted to find a sense of belonging but doubted that he could find it. For example, when Charles asked him to join the basketball team he denied him at first saying “I 'm not good enough to play” Harleen
One day, she got killed by a nearby shootout while they were playing, which ultimately altered Will's entire childhood and life. It impelled Shawn to teach him about the "rules "and adulthood because his childhood was already beginning to collapse on itself. The reason is that he just witnessed his best friend dying in front of him and described it as, "Her eyes wide, / the brightness dimming. / Her mouth, open.
One big way to improve Will’s communication is to deal with the relationship violence that occurred to him. Sean started this for him in the scene where he tried to get Will to see that his upbringing was not his fault. This was a big step for Will to understand himself and how he should see his relationships. Through Sean, Will also learned some emotional understanding of himself. Emotional understanding will allow him to have emotional competence.
During the film Will demonstrates anger as well as irritability in a short tempered manner. In a particular scene, Will becomes overwhelmed with anger after encountering an old classmate who bullied him in preschool. Such anger and irritability caused Will’s mind to become blocked during the violent act in which Will also assaults an office. The incident ultimately leads Will unraveling the root of the
