If I win this scholarship, I will know that the hard work of students who thrive for academic success isn’t looked over just because a student next to us thrives for success through their sport. In high school, we see an ample amount of our classmates get signed to different colleges and universities because of their abilities on the court or on the field. But, after being in classes with them for four or more years, we know that their grades aren’t of good quality all of the time. But, us students who work the hardest in the classrooms to pull off 4.0s and 5.0’s can barely get a decent scholarship because we don’t have a 25 or above ACT score. This can at times prevent students from going to their dream school because they don’t have the money to pay out of pocket for school. This scholarship shows the well-deserved recognition for thriving scholars. If I win this scholarship, I will be an example for my younger brother since his depression had been affecting his abilities in school. I will also be an example to my younger peers who look up to me for inspiration to be the best in everything that they
Frank Deford has numerous opinionated claims in his article; however, he lacks organization, proof to his claims, and a professional tone. Deford first reminds the audience of the speech he gave in the past about collegiate athletes being the only students to receive genuine scholarships. Next, He explains Brand’s stance on the issue. The world, as well as ourselves, can become confident. I will encourage scholarship, leadership, and good citizenship with my school and community. With my hardwork, not only shall I benefit, but all that I help shall be benefited as well.
Andrew Merkle resembles this as he argues that student-athletes already have “a leg up on the majority of his or her classmates” because they will be graduating with a degree debt-free (Merkle). This standpoint provides a legitimate comparison, but fails to recognize multiple key aspects. Many non-athletes earn academic scholarships that allow them to also graduate debt-free just as athletic scholarships do, but the stipulations of these scholarships differ drastically. Academic scholarships do not require the demanding extra-curricular involvement that athletic scholarships do, therefore the opportunity to work part-time to cover living expenses if needed is present. The two types of scholarships were both earned and offer the same monetary benefits, but athletic scholarships are much more binding for the
Alpha Phi was founded in 1872 by ten women at Syracuse University (Alpha Phi.org). Alpha Phi is a women’s international Greek organization that brings women together by promoting sisterhood and unity. It is a sisterhood containing more than 200,000 members in over 170 college campuses around the world (Alpha Phi.org). Alpha Phi helps college women achieve their goals through love and support. Alpha Phi values its six pillars; sisterhood, service, scholarship, leadership, loyalty, and character development.
When you hear the story it is always the same. A football player who is as dumb as a rock (and that’s an insult to rocks) gets a full ride scholarship to college and just drinks and parties, while the nerdy student wants to go to college to make something of himself and has to work two jobs, tutors other people, and practically starves himself to go to the same the college . When kids turn 17 or 18 years old and they start filling out applications, this story becomes a parent’s reality. They hear left and right, this athlete was awarded a basketball scholarship or this athlete received a softball scholarship. They push their children to become an athlete just to get the extra money (Sullivan, 2016).
I wanted join Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. sense my sophomore year of college. I want to have the brotherhood to help me grow intellectually, socially and intellectually. All these things I want and support I have seen in various moment through my experience with the brother of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity,
I am writing this letter to express my interest in your illustrious organization, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. I am currently a senior majoring in Criminal Justice, minoring in African American Studies with aspirations of becoming a Social Justice Attorney. Born in the inner city of New York and being raised in the suburbs of Atlanta, I am not your typical Southern Belle or City girl. I like to think of myself as being a fine mix of the two. At a young age my mother groomed me into what she believed a well-rounded lady should be.
This emphasizes that although athletic programs offer financial assistance to many students, the organizations do not fully cover the tuition of college. This relates directly to the argument about time management. If student athletes do not have enough time to work a job, then it translates into the funding of their education. Society often thinks that sport scholarships are given generously, when in reality they are not. Earning a “full ride” scholarship is tremendously challenging and rare.
The article highlights the exploitation of college athletes, who often generate millions of dollars in revenue for their universities but receive little compensation and face significant barriers to academic success. The demands of sports, such as long hours of practice and travel, can make it difficult for student athletes to prioritize their education and may students will start to fall behind their fellow classmates and not have a chance to pass the class or even graduate on time. Additionally, the article notes that many student athletes come from disadvantaged backgrounds and lack the resources and support systems necessary to excel academically. When given an opportunity to compete in college as an athlete many of these kids forget that they still have to participate in school and coming from their background as struggling students itll be even harder for them to learn in the college environment. If they struggled from elementary to high school there is a little chance that they will be able to be above average in college and without the money or help given by the school it makes it even worse.
The first notable member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated that really sticks out to me is Umzae George Washington Carver. He was initiated in the Gamma Chapter in the year of 1918. To begin I selected him, because he was a very familiar name. I remember learning about Umzae George Washington Carver in the elementary and middle school. With creating over 100 different uses for the peanut, soybean, and sweat potato he was a very prominent African American man in the 1920s.
“Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise, I rise, I rise.,” to become a Delta Woman. When asked to express why I should be awarded the honor & pleasure of being apart this great sorority; I must admit I was a bit overwhelmed but also very humbled. However, I am reminded of the great women Delta Sigma Theta has helped mold some of the most influential women in the world. I want to be apart of the most illustrious sorority organization.
My intention is not to join this organization to step or because I like to party but, because I believe whole-heartedly in the values of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., scholarship, service, sisterhood and finer womanhood. I believe that through Zeta Phi Beta Inc. I will be able to fine tune my leadership skills, make lifelong friendships and help people on my journey as others did for me. It is my hope that this lifestyle will change my life for the better.
At my high school, the Beta Club is the most elite, respected, and prestigious club. It is filled with the leaders, the doers, the hard-working, and the individuals who turn their dreams into reality. It is not for everyone, and in our ever-changing society, that is clear. Most people today do not like to rise up to the ever-growing challenge of leadership. It takes a certain kind of person to be a good leader, and the Beta Club has greatly helped me in doing so.
It has been seen that when women are given the opportunity to play sports they will take it, but Title IX hasn’t only given women the opportunity to play but also the opportunity to challenge stereotypes that men are superior to women in sports. According to National Center for Education Statistics there was a 1000% rise in women who play high school sports from 1971-72 to 2010-11. And boys participation in high school sports has gone up by 134%, this just goes to show that as soon as women were given the chance to play they took it. This growth is translating into college sports for women. Before 1972 scholarships for women were unheard of, but according to a new report by the National Coalition for Women & Girls in Education “In the past 40 years, high school girls' participation in athletics has grown tenfold, and college scholarships for female athletes have gone from virtually nil to 48 percent at Division I schools” (Khadaroo), this is great improvement for women.
Did you know that depending on the sport, students who play sports in college most likely have less than a 2% chance of becoming professional athletes? At middle schools, high schools and colleges across the country, everyone is arguing over whether or not students with failing grades should be allowed to play sports. In my opinion, a good education is so very important for our country’s youth, especially the athletes. Not a lot of kids are good enough to play in the top college sports programs in the country. But even those who are, still have an astonishingly low chance at making the professional leagues.
