April, 1861, the Civil War ended and in the North's favor. The Northerners were extremely happy until Abraham Lincoln, the president that led them to the win, got assassinated. Andrew Johnson who was the vice president at that time, then became president during reconstruction from the Civil war. Andrew Johnson, however, had totally different beliefs than Lincoln. He wanted slavery and didn’t see blacks as equals to whites. I believe that African-Americans were not free during reconstruction. The first reason of why I believe this is because of black codes. “No negro shall reside within the limits of the town of Opelousas who is not in the regular service of some white person or former slave owner.” This is an example of a back code. The KKK was a racist group that strongly hated blacks and anyone who helped or supported them. The KKK thought that the U.S was better off without blacks and that blacks were not equal to whites. They formed a klan that all had this belief and hung blacks, burned down schools that blacks were getting a little education in, and many other stuff to show their hate. The KKK also burned a cross to intimidate blacks and others who supported blacks. It was very hard for a black to be elected for something. The KKK would make sure that a black man would not be elected for anything. For example, they would dehumanize a black man's face so people would know not to vote for him because he’ll make the country bad. Although, the black man could have been better than the people he was running against. However, because of the KKK, it was highly unlikely for a black man to be elected for …show more content…
The Freedmen’s Bureau was made to help blacks fit into society but really, it didn't help blacks at all. Andrew Johnson, who was the president at that time didn’t support it and this caused the Freedmen's Bureau to not get money and resources from Johnson, which made the Bureau go downhill. This also made it unfounded. The Freedmen’s Bureau also didn’t carry out all of its goals. The Freedmen's Bureau wanted to do a lot for blacks and help them fit in but actually it took away some of blacks land, and it “failed to provide long term protection for blacks to ensure any real measurement of equality,” (The Freedmen’s Bureau worksheet). Blacks were losing places to farm and build houses because of this, and they weren't even getting long term protection. So, when the Bureau let them go, where would they go? The Freedmen's Bureau was meant to help blacks but really, it didn’t help blacks at
The KKK thought they were holy men, torturing a people into submission. They thought they were clean and if you were black, by even a drop, you were unclean and
The Freedmen’s Bureau, created in 1865 by congress and led by the war department’s General Oliver Howard. Located in eleven different districts, it was created to provide aid for the four million freed slaves. After the slaves were considered free according to the emancipation proclamation a lot of the left the plantations with no foundation. They didn’t have a permanent house, job, or supplies. Freedman’s Bureau was the place for them to get everything they needed after this journey.
African American Rights During Reconstruction By Dane Worthington Hour 7 Advanced Social Studies How many African Americans in the 1800s do you think thought that Reconstruction made them equal to White American citizens? Reconstruction was the process in which Southern states were reintegrated into the Union. During Reconstruction African Americans were given rights were supposed to have them protected by the United States military.
This didn’t change because most freedmen still had no way of making money for themselves, so they were not apart of the American economy. It also showed that even though slavery had been abolished, African Americans would still have a long and rough journey before being treated as equals.
To work, the freed slaves were forced to sign contracts with their employer. The Mississippi and South Carolina Black Codes of 1865 required blacks to sign contracts of employment and if they left before it ended then they would be forced to pay earlier wages. Freed blacks’ status in the postwar South
Their main goal was to manufacture it impossible for emancipated African Americans to have the ability to vote in addition to becoming in any way equal with whites. Second was the 1920s Klan, which was liked by people all around the country also included somewhere between 3-5 million members. This Klan was a result of World War I which caused a change in cultural, economic, as well as social values thanks to the Industrial Revolution. They were against those changes in values. Third, and the most recent Klan, showed up after World War II.
Blacks did everything in their power to avoid interaction with the Ku Klux Klan at all costs but sometimes this was inevitable. The Ku Klux Klan was responsible for almost all of the lynchings carried out on blacks during the Jim Crow era and afterwards. The Ku Klux Klan believed in the superiority of the white race and that blacks had no place in their world. They were so strong about their beliefs that they would torture, maim, hang, burn, and beat blacks inhumanely. The Ku Klux Klan created a fear within all African Americans across the
With reconstruction there were many doors opened for African Americans. They were able to be free, and to become a citizen, and male slaves over the age of 21 were able to vote. Also there was education for children and some adults, and there were marriages for former slaves. In the image drawn by A. R. Waud, he displays a male African American voting for the first time. This image shows how constitutionally this was groundbreaking for the former slaves.
The government provided food, clothing, and even land, in attempts to help the Freedmen who have been recently released from slavery. In the Freedmen’s Bureau, it stated, “...may direct such issues of provisions, clothing, and fuel, as he may deem needful for the immediate and temporary shelter and supply of destitute and suffering refugees and Freedmen and their wives and children...” (Document D). The government put in place a way for Freedmen to everything they need to start a new life after slavery. They were even generous by even giving them fuel which isn’t even a basic need, and in doing all of this, Freedmen were able to live a healthy life due to the federal government.
The Bureau could not provide African Americans with land, but it did contribute to education. Formerly enslaved African Americans were educated with the help of Northern charities. This was a positive outcome during
If the Freedmen’s Bureau had continued, African Americans and poor whites would have continued to receive support from the government as well as from other volunteers, such as carpetbaggers and scalawags. Over time, Southerners would begin to realize that former slaves were becoming equals to them, and slowly begin to accept it, especially since blacks would have the resources and people to enforce this idea. This would lead to America being the just and equal society citizens had wanted since the
The reconstruction period was a failure because African Americans, mainly males, were not treated with equality although the constitution said that the they were free and had the right to vote, be educated and had the right to liberty, life and the pursuit to happiness. Organizations, like the KKK, were created to harm freed slaves and their families. Laws were created such as the Black Codes restricting former slaves from their rights. African Americans endured a lot of violence over the years. “In Grayson, Texas, a white man and two friends murdered three former slaves because the wanted to ‘ thin the niggers out and drive them to their hole’”.
This bureau was designed for newly freed slaves or homeless white men to take shelter after the war. The bureau acted at a ‘early welfare system’ which allowed these people to receive food, shelter, and medical aid if needed. They were also allowed to offer people farms that had been confiscated after the war however this was demolished after Johnson took office and pardon the initial land owners from any wrong doings which caused many of these farms to be repossessed ad given to their initial owners. However, one of the biggest accomplishments of this bureau were the 3,000 schools they opened for blacks which resulted in as many as 200,000 blacks getting an education until they no longer received funding from the government which occurred in
The main opponent of the KKK was the National Association for the Advancement of colored people. The Ku Klux Klan had several methods of promoting their agenda. One of those ways was lynching, which is hanging the people they were
The Reconstruction (1865-1877) was a period during which the life of the defeated South was to be returned to normal; it was also a time when the Black Americans attained some rights thanks to Lincoln and the Republican part of the Congress and despite Johnson’s intentions. An extremely violent time, it is sometimes called “the darkest period of American history”; still, it brought many important progressive changes to the US. Abraham Lincoln is known for proclaiming the black slaves Emancipation in 1863; he was convinced that it was necessary for the North to win the war. Lincoln believed that the Confederate states needed to be reintegrated back into the US while preserving the abolition of slavery; however, the 16th President wasn’t planning
