Holidays celebrate an area’s culture and/or the day(s) it commemorates with various festivities and traditions. In Theodore Geisel’s How The Grinch Stole Christmas, the light-hearted denizens of Who-Ville are preparing to celebrate Christmas. For the Whos, it is a time of fun and merryness, in which they sing and play with one another. This is a time of camaraderie and fellowship between everyone in the town. Apart from this is the antagonist, the Grinch, who dreads the holiday along with the singing, feasting, and other festive activities that the holiday inspires. The narrator foretells of how the Whos will wake to their yearly Christmas routine of getting up early and rushing for toys. The narrator also claims, “Oh the Noise! Noise! Noise! Noise! That’s one thing he hated!”(6). From this the reader is able to gather that the uproar created by the Whos is one of several characteristics of Christmas that the Grinch loathes. To his dismay all of the Whos adore their toys and making noise. The Whos even enjoy doing this together so much that they recreate their form of celebrating every year. Cindy Lou is questioning the materialism that surrounds Christmas, so she nominates the Grinch as this year's Cheermeister to show that Christmas is about loving one another. She convinces the Grinch to come down from his cave and join the celebration, however, the mayor shames the Grinch in front of the entire town. This causes the Grinch to destroy the Cheermeister Festival in a fit of anger. He schemes to ruin the rest Christmas by stealing all the decorations and presents in every house in Whoville.

Today I will be telling you the story of why the Grinch hates Christmas. The Grinch’s house as a child was very boring and plain. Even at Christmas it only had a bare tree with no lights or ornaments. They didn’t have any other ornaments inside or out. At Christmas, the Grinch and all of his siblings never got toys.

Dr. Seuss’ poem, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” can be analyzed using many different schools of criticism, however, the psychoanalytical school of criticism holds allows us to truly understand the “true meaning” behind the poem. The poem begins with a socially isolated character, the Grinch, who loathes Christmas and wishes to completely destroy it. He wants to completely eliminate Christmas from “Whoville.” The Grinch gets irritated whenever when he hears the singing from the children and sees families feasting together in the holiday season.
