We negate the resolution that teachers should be armed due to the waste of money, time, and safety. We would like to present the following definitions: Armed is defined by merriam-webster to be furnished with weapons Weapon is defined by merriam-webster to be something used to injure, defeat, or destroy. We believe this resolution is asking us to advocate to negate and our opponents to advocate to affirm. The team which best meets those burdens will win this debate. Money Our argument is that we don’t have enough money to supply the guaranteed supplies for safety of the students. The Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence states, “Researchers conservatively estimate that gun violence costs the American economy at least $229 billion every year, including $8.6 billion in direct expenses such as for emergency and medical care.” If we allow each teacher in every school to obtain a gun, then our debt would increase tremendously. Unlike professional shooters, teachers must undergo a series of training in order to obtain a gun. Without the proper protection and training, which was not included in the resolution, would guarantee that the weapons would fall under the wrong hands of the students. Everytown Research states, “Among shootings at K-12 schools in which the age of the shooter was known, 56 percent (39 of 70) were perpetrated by minors.” The resolution states that all teachers would be armed, but, if the teachers were to be armed, the teachers would traumatize the students mentally away from them. Hamby, a research professor in the department of education states, “ ...the links between exposure to weapons violence and negative outcomes of trauma in kids (including depression, anxiety and aggression).” This is important because if the students are aware of the teacher’s possession then the risks of wrongdoing and mental disasters will definitely
It’s as if you were messing with one of your own” (Lestch Corinne). This teacher takes her job very seriously, and when it comes to protecting her students she will do almost anything. In today’s world, we are no longer guaranteed the feeling of safety in our public schools, and if there is anything we can all agree on, is the fact that, we all want safety for our public schools, and it seems apparent that the best possible solution is arming
Teachers should not be armed in schools because the could not handle a real situation, and the liability is too much of a risk. To elaborate, it is widely agreed that a student’s well-being is a teacher’s concern. For six to eight hours every day for 5 days a week, the life of the student is in the teacher’s hands. However, a teacher has never been expected to arm themself to protect a student until now.
It is very difficult to respond rationally to a national tragedy. For the past two decades the United States has been confronting what appears to be an increasing epidemic school violence, with each additional instance inspiring an ever more rehearsed debate about gun control, mental health, and school security. Many of the proposed solutions to these attacks are hastily composed in the days following an attack, and are based primarily on myths rather than facts. If we intend to improve the situation, we must take a far more measured approach. We must combat this issue based not on our fears, but based on evidence and best-practice.
Adam looked up and saw the source of his agony sit down in a chair across the room. Adam grabbed the gun from his bag and took his aim, and pulled the trigger.¨ School violence is at an all time high. School shootings and other illegal activities are not uncommon in schools. Teachers currently are not armed, and can do very little to protect the students in their classroom. Teachers should be allowed to be armed during school hours, because they can protect their students, keep the school a safe place, and prevent other illegal activities.
If all teachers are armed shootings will be reduced up to 40% in fear through the shooters eyes. Another
Congress, schools, and the National Rifle Association need to see where the main problem is coming from. Is banning guns going to make a difference? Do teachers need to carry a gun
Over the past few weeks, arming teachers has been a controversial topic throughout the country. School shootings have taken the lives of many over the past few years, yet they are becoming more and more frequent. In today’s society children shouldn’t have to go to school worried if they are going to be safe that day. If teachers are armed it will add that extra bit of protection to the children. A big question is if arming teachers is even going to matter if an active shooter happens to be in that school.
Lucy Hanson a special needs teacher reported to “F” is for firearm; More teachers authorized to carry weapons in classroom that, “I want to protect my students,I'm going to stand in front of a bullet for any student that is in my protection and so I want another option to defend us”(Hansen). She wants to be able to defend herself and her students, so he needs a firearm. Less than 2% of all youth homicides occur at school(Yurvati). With the teachers to defend the students, that statistic is very true.
The problem with gun violence in schools has existed for years, and something should be done to eliminate the problem that endangers students who attend schools every day. One recent incident with gun violence in schools occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School where several young children were killed and many others injured (Elliott 529). Also, a bombing incident in 1927 killed thirty-seven children and was likely the start of school gun violence (Elliott 529). Children, who attend schools, sometimes do not feel safe because of the problem with gun
It’s better to not leave it all up to chance and to stick with the public service of law enforcement, certified protectors, who can truly handle the job. The fight or flight situation, also known as hyperarousal, is a very detrimental affect to authorizing teachers to have firearms. It is a reflex, the go-to response in a stressful situation. And, what can be more stressful than a school shooting or having to shoot someone yourself? In this, giving teachers this responsibility, there is always the
Firstly, the arming of students, faculty and staff should be prohibited because its unsafe. The debate on whether staff, faculty and students should carry firearms on campuses has been going for years now. Some colleges have debated that a law should be passed were staff and faculty should carry firearms on campus, but other colleges have dismissed this case because it is dangerous and unsafe. According to Jesus Villahermosa’s essay “Guns don’t belong in the Hands of Administrators, Professors, or Students” he states, “I agree that allowing guns on campuses will create problems, not solve them.” This statement is true because not everyone is capable to handle a gun or even use one.
Hypothetically, a law is passed stating that teachers are allowed to carry guns in school. In a sick twisted world, the teacher becomes the school shooter. Your student is in class and their teacher pulls out their government funded school weapon and starts shooting. How is your child supposed to protect themselves if the approved district teacher starts shooting the students with a malicious intent. Teachers should not be allowed to carry guns at school.
Guns have no role in our country schools. Schools and colleges are places of education. Students should be free to learn in an environment away from every day violence. The catastrophes that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Columbine High School, and Virginia Tech. confirm the penetrating conclusion guns have in our nation’s schools. Violence on campus has Students, Parent, and University Staff all concerned and looking for preventative measures.
In recent years there has been a big debate when it comes to the topic of gun safety. This issue isn’t just a problem in the Illinois or the U.S. but in many different places around the world. The main arguments revolve around the best way to reduce the high number of gun violence and accidental injuries caused by guns in the United States. The main issue I will discuss is not just gun safety, but more specifically a better solution to keeping kids more safe from guns. The big question people have the most opinions about is, should kids be taught gun safety at a young age, and will that help reduce the number of injuries and deaths in children due to playing with firearms.(ProQuest Staff)
The gun policies in the United States have never been very strict. This has lead to easier access of guns to students that are just becoming adults. Obtaining a gun is easier than it should be. Almost anyone can go online to sites like Craigslist and purchase a gun. Not only is it easier for students to access guns, it is also easier for them to obtain the knowledge of how to operate such weapons.
