Hypothetically, a law is passed stating that teachers are allowed to carry guns in school. In a sick twisted world, the teacher becomes the school shooter. Your student is in class and their teacher pulls out their government funded school weapon and starts shooting. How is your child supposed to protect themselves if the approved district teacher starts shooting the students with a malicious intent. Teachers should not be allowed to carry guns at school. There negatives for teachers having guns at school include: students getting the gun, extensive training for the teachers - which would cost money, students frightened to learn, and what would happen if the approved teacher with the gun is not there. There should be no need for teachers to …show more content…
Equipping teachers with guns, who are little more than civilians, is absurd. This would not help prevent the type of deadly mass shooting we 've been seeing lately. All that would do is increase the possibility of innocent people getting caught in the crossfire. Instead of training for how to use guns teachers should be taught self defense and how to use items around them as weapons. It would also help if every teacher learned self defense and not just a …show more content…
Teachers did not go into their profession to be babysitters, and they certainly didn 't go into it to be security guards. Now society is trying to force them to be both. How anyone could possibly secure those weapons so that students could never obtain them would be a nightmare- and unrealistic? And to think that if a school full of teenagers can access a weapon in every classroom that violence would decrease is absurd. There are many negatives to teachers owning guns such as: cost of training and weapons, teachers turning against their students, and keeping teacher who has the gun a secret. Having guns in the school would cause more
Positives for arming teachers include: -Protecting against an intruder -Being first on the scene in the event of an intruder -Being an inexpensive option compared to hiring professional security -Always being present in the classroom unlike
If we were to arm teachers, it would make it much more challenging for a school shooter to succeed in killing innocent children. Kasey Hansen is a special needs instructor, and she one among many teachers who conceal carry at school. “I never really thought about it before Sandy Hook,” Hansen said. “It just killed me. It’s something personal when you mess with students or children.
“Every Teacher in America Should Have a Gun” by Steve Siebold delivers the message about why teachers should be armed with guns. Primarily he thinks that shooters will be less motivated to try to attack a school that is able to defend itself against the gunman. He also goes on to say that “Every second counts in a school shooting. Calling 911 and waiting for police to arrive isn’t good enough.” He gives us the idea that we need to take action against these shooters and potentially end school shootings once and for all.
Arming Teachers Is Not The Solution To Stop School Shootings It’s only been about 12 weeks in 2018 and there have been 17 school shootings where students and teachers were killed or injured. This basically means that there’s a shooting every week. Of shootings perpetrated by minors at primary and secondary schools and for which the source of the firearm was known, more than half of the kids obtained the gun at home likely because an adult did not store it locked and unloaded. In all, these incidents resulted in 59 deaths and 124 non-fatal gunshot injuries. Because of all these school shootings, there have been people saying that teachers should protect their students, but in teachers’ contract, they didn’t sign up to do that.
Gun Control keep School Safe The 21st century has brought out a lot of violence not only in the communities in general but it also puts the lives of students in school in danger. Individuals should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon if they choose to in order to be able to feel safe weather the person is a teacher or a student. The right to carry Teachers in todays society should have the right to obtain permit and carry a weapon to school if they choose to.
Students today live their day-to-day lives in constant fear of what seems inevitable. The United States has one of the highests rates of school shootings in the world. Society has become so desensitized to these shootings that they are no longer shocked to hear about another school falling victim to it. Even when students take a stand against gun violence, the only solution offered to them is a proposition to arm teachers. However, bringing more guns into a school will only further deteriorate the situation.
Imagine drawing on a desk and being cuffed by an officer. Would you want to go back to a school like that? While some teachers might say they feel safer with armed guards in the building, it turns out that kids feel less safe knowing that a guard is in the building. This is affecting grades and bringing children's nerves to an all-time high. These teachers speak for their kids and it is not helping them adjust to having a gun on school grounds.
Violent criminals know that currently schools are gun free zones, and can use this factor to their advantage. Rather than falling victim to an attack on the school; teachers could protect themselves and their students. Students could feel much safer if their teacher was armed. Students would feel more safe if they knew they could be protected from an attack from an intruder or another student. Criminals know that teachers currently are not armed and could potentially see schools as a target.
There is a possibility that a kid who is planning a shooting could just be in a classroom and find out were his/her teacher keeps the weapon, and they wouldn 't even have to sneak a gun in. That’s a downside but what if we made gun safes that only opened with a teachers ID or own password making it almost impossible for a student to open it. Conclusion By arming teachers there are alot more positives than negatives, Yes bad things can happen with a deadly weapon in a classroom but people will continue to do these horrific crimes knowing there is hardly anything that’s going to stop them.
What a lot of people do not take into consideration is that the teachers must go through training and have to be liable to the responsibilities they are taking once they have a concealed carry weapon. Arming teachers could help lower the number of school shootings because the reaction times will be much faster, and it will add a bit of security to the children. Arming teachers will help lower the number of school shootings. If teachers are liable and are fine with carrying concealed weapons in schools, they would be able to respond to the site of the shooting much faster than it would be waiting for the police to arrive. Apart from having faster reaction times to the shooting, arming teachers will also add extra security to many students.
In 2011, 10.3 in every 100,000 people in the U.S. were victims of gun related deaths. If the teacher would have had a gun then he/she could have shot the attacker. Teachers should carry handguns because it provides safety for the students and because it is the teacher’s right. Teachers shouldn’t carry handguns because students would fear them. Ken Corbett a clinical assistant professor reported to Arming teachers: three reasons why teachers should not carry handguns in school that, “ When violent force is upheld as safety, fear and silence creep in.
I agree with this policy because many shooters give out many signs before they actually perform their act. I believe they should not arm teachers with guns because then what is the difference between a teacher and the law enforcement. I think they should make sure that every classroom door is locked when it is shut, and it should be required for the door to be shut through the class period. Also, instead of giving teachers guns I think they should mount a fire extinguisher under their desk. This gives the teacher something to spray at the shooter and possibly hit them on top the head with it.
Not all educators understand the basics of gun safety. Without this proper knowledge, many people can get severely injured or put others in harm. If all teachers wanted to carry a gun, they would go through a lot of classes and it would cost a lot of money. They could become the target of a school shooter and put students at risk for them coming into their classroom. Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in Parkland, Florida, is saying no to arming
It’s better to not leave it all up to chance and to stick with the public service of law enforcement, certified protectors, who can truly handle the job. The fight or flight situation, also known as hyperarousal, is a very detrimental affect to authorizing teachers to have firearms. It is a reflex, the go-to response in a stressful situation. And, what can be more stressful than a school shooting or having to shoot someone yourself? In this, giving teachers this responsibility, there is always the
Guns have no role in our country schools. Schools and colleges are places of education. Students should be free to learn in an environment away from every day violence. The catastrophes that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Columbine High School, and Virginia Tech. confirm the penetrating conclusion guns have in our nation’s schools. Violence on campus has Students, Parent, and University Staff all concerned and looking for preventative measures.
